    There is a lot of logistics involved in running (NS) off-line excursions, and there is a lot of money (cost) involved in restoring the 2102. One has to remember the Great Dismal Swamp incident years ago. A NS steam excursion in the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia derailed in 1986. Thirteen coaches flipped, injuring 200 passengers. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.

    Then you would have remembered me at Temple Station (Ticket Agent). Yes! It was like our playground! Perfectly put!

    My dad fired the 2102 back in the day.When she pulled the freedom train on the east coast, my dad and I went tnsee her at Valley Forge Pa. Got up n the cab, engineer she'll do 90 mph, dad told the engineer she can do better than that. Here's what you do. Dad was great, I'm 72 yrs. Old now but what a great memory.👍🤠🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

      That was actually 2101 owned by Ross Rowland although he did also use 2102 for a brief time

    The moment the '02 high-balled it across the High Line (Buttonwood Street) Bridge, it's been something my mine will always remember. I remember Bailey having a hard time focusing the camcorder on the subject ('02). He wanted to put it down and watch. I'm glad he didn't!

    Must of been something you'll never forget seeing! Thank you for sharing this, and hope to one day be able to witness the 02 on the mainline again.

    In the '70's, this engine was on some excursions on the Pittsburgh Shawmut Railroad in Kittaning, Pa; I was there and I am looking for any info from that trip.

    Well, the 2102 is coming back. Work has started on it. They hope to have it running by next year. 2100 might also run next year, so there will be two operational T-1's at the same time! Also, the RBMN is building a station at North Reading, apparently just off Bellevue Ave. near Rt. 61. This will be used for passenger boarding for special excursions. Maybe a 2102 trip from North Reading to Minersville and return, or North Reading to Port Carbon turn on the wye and run forward on the return trip, too! But, doubt that NS will let them turn 2102 at Reading wye so they would have to run it backwards northbound toward Port Clinton if it is facing forward southbound.

    I guess friction bearings weren't a problem in the 1980's when these excursions ran, and Conrail let BM&R run them. But, in the early 1990's an friction bearing interchange ban was put into effect. So that ended using older open window coaches with friction bearings on mainline class 1 railroad excursions. That's why NS's new steam excursions use steam locomotives that were converted to roller bearing, like the 630, 765, mostly the tender trucks and maybe the lead/trailing trucks on the locomotives, and the 630's drivers were converted to oil feed from grease block, 630 did have some overheating bearings during some of the first mainline excursions for the public and employees in Nov. 2011 and June 2012. That's because not all of 630's drivers were converted yet. They did install a bearing temperature reader in 630 and modern diesel-like brakes. Also all of the coaches used with NS's new excursions are roller bearing and have sealed windows. Open windows are also a liability on the mainline. Too many people would stick their heads and hands out the windows. They started prohibiting open vestibule doors. So, 2102 would NOT be a candidate to operate any NS steam excursions in eastern PA in the future. It would have to be 765 or something on a rare once in a blue moon visit to eastern PA. 765 just ran excursions from Lewistown to Horseshoe Curve and return this past May. 765 did run mainline excursions through Reading in 1988, they originated in NJ. 1988 was also the final year 2102 ran public trips on the Conrail ex-Reading mainlines, they became NS in 1999 after the split.

    The 2102 excursions so far for 2022 are only Reading to Jim Thorpe so far. Wish they would do shorter runs and the lines toward Pottsville and Mount Carmel and toward Pittston.

    in 1971 I had some very happy hours helping out West Camp on the short lived Green Brier RR there was some about when he d said you want to operate the Stoker there was just some thing about it >Oh the T-1 is a little more difficult to maintain then the NKP Berk.the way they cramp every thing under the cab

      The berk is at steam town. It would run if there was the space and if the D&H didn't damage it.

  • @yankinga

    Let's correct some misinformation on here: 765 has plain bearings, not roller bearings,
    on her driving wheels and operates on Norfolk Southern, so that's not a deal breaker for operating a T-1. Whether Andy Muller wants to dump money into restoring 2102 or not, I don't know, but with Reading 2100 coming east to be restored (and to undo the Rube Goldberg oil firing abortion installed by Tom Paine's people) things could get very interesting. The former Reading is a major component of NS's system.

    • @thomasbush5778
      @thomasbush5778 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +yankinga 765 has timken roller bearings on her driving axles, just like 759. She now has rollers on the tender trucks and the only plain bearings left are on the trailing truck under the firebox.

    • @yankinga
      @yankinga 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas Bush Thanks for the correction. I don't know what made me think the Berk had plain bearings on her driving axles.
      Let me amend my statement to: "Southern 4501, which has plain bearing driving axles, is permitted to operate on Norfolk Southern's main lines."

      That guy's name is Tom Jones, Not the actor. He was the president of my group Rails Diversified of Stowe Ohio, simply known as RDI. There were about 7 of us from Pittsburgh Pa. are that did about 7 years of work in Brownsville Pa. The Monongahela railroad abandoned round house to get the 02 to pass inspection to steam again. We did have some help from guys from the reading Historical society would come in about once a month to help us. Besides mechanical work, I also painted the loco and tender and also that first car, an Ex UP dormitory car. Fond memories today on my 69Th birthday, what a surprise to find this video on my birthday! Thanx for making it a great day for me!

    Why doesn't Andy just sell the 2102 to a group that can restore it and maintain it? And possibly convert it to roller bearing? Look at what the Fort Wayne group did with the 765, and it's running again. They (R&N) have the 425, that seems to be enough for their needs. They only operate a few steam runs a year now.

    • @GregoryDPawelski
      @GregoryDPawelski  11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was a period of time from 1996 to 2008 where there wasn't as much interest in riding behind steam as there was before then. However, today, you'll be seeing more and more steam locomotives being refurbished and running. But it takes a lot of hard earn money. You won't see it overnight.
