  • How the aquarium hobby changed his life. In today's video, Mike shares his inspiring message and background with us. Like many other first responders or service members, Mike dealt with combat issues, PTSD, and trauma, and his fish room and aquariums gave him a valuable outlet and positive hobby to improve his well being and mental health.
So many others deal with similar issues, whether it is coming back home from deployment or other traumatic life events, and Mike's message is meant to help those struggling, and show how the aquarium hobby can help them as well.

I started this hobby as me and my wife were undergoing a rough time in our lives. I spent my after office hours learning about the hobby. I started with 20-gallon tanks. Now, I have an 80 and 65 Gallons tank for my African and American Cichlids. We watch these fishes swimming peacefully and love feeding them. It became a part of my life.

I'm disabled from a brain injury and PTSD. My friend gave me a 29 gallon tank a few months after my iniury and that really changed my life. It is great for mental health and brings nature into our homes. We can also do it at our own pace. I gifted my mom a tank (recent widow) hoping it can be rewarding to her as well. Keep up the great videos Cichlid Bros!

This is a similar reason why i joined the hobby. I injured my back to the point of being in a wheelchair for months unable to leave the house. I needed a hobby that i could do and enjoy in my own home. I started with a 20g tank and now have a 15g, 20g, 32g, and a 75g. It's been the best decision for my mental health to date. The fish bring so much joy to my life and they have such unique personalities.

This hobby definitely saved me and my marriage. I also suffer from PTSD, but as a Domestic Abuse Survivor when I feel myself sinking into that dark place I go and watch one of the aquariums. I agree it really helps with the mental health and has a calming effect. My husband and I are currently working on getting my fishroom up and running, it will double as my office. Thank you for your Service to our country and for sharing story with us may it reach many who are going through similar struggles.

Thank you for sharing and thank you for your service. My husband and I are just getting back into the hobby after a 20 plus year hiatus, and were so excited to rediscover our love for hobby , together. As for the expense, we could and have, in our past, spent money on far worse.

Great story and my own is similar....I was heavily addicted to drugs/pain killers about 10 years ago and the aquarium hobby is the one thing that brought me out of a rut I was in for 15 years....I been clean about 10 years and keeping fish as crazy as it sounds helped me overcome it. I tell people you cant force anyone to quit drugs, they quit when they are ready. No rehab, punishment, jail, whatever helps until that person is ready for a change. A hobby is key to this. Ive always lifted weights and played guitar so it was nothing different but as soon as I got interested in keeping fish my focus changed from spending all my money on drugs to having a great career, home, guitars, and now fish that key to the drug addicted mind keep it busy for days and days. I thank my fish everyday. God bless the great man and every man and woman struggling after defending our country. Shame its being destroyed from within now but ill keep politics out of the fish channel.

Wonderful story! Mike seem very nice guy and hopefully he can fulfill his visions.
I agree with the mental health aspect. For me, I have always been super competitive. Anything I do, I go deep and fully, need to master it and compete with others. That is most of the times really painful as you never can be the best. I was bit hesitant to even try new sports that I wouldnt end up in the same rabbit hole again and again. So for me, it has been so wonderful to finally find a hobby that you basically cannot even compete or burnout. It is just pure joy (most of the time) and relaxing. Therefore it is great for my mental.
