This used to be a very good auto channel with solid reviews but not anymore , now it's very pro VW biased , they even suggested that the Polo that costs 19.000+ pounds is the best choice in the small car segment.
Here is Australia, reviews on the Kona have been so positive and then watching this just doesn't make sense. I think it's a solid car and based on it's competition it stacks up well. Comparing to a Ford Fiesta is unfair because they are in two completely different categories! Stop being so harsh on Hyundai, you did the same for the i30!
SeaEagleTwo You've got to keep in mind though, in Australia both this and the i30 have much more powerful engines than these gutless 1ltr turbo units used in Europe. That alone makes the Aussie spec models vastly superior.
There are a few problems with comparing reviews here and reviews over in the UK when it comes to Hyundai and the main one is that Hyundai does all of their own ride and handling tuning for the Australian model in Australia. In fact we're one of the only markets that actually has its own bespoke suspension setup. That, and most of the reviews of the Kona haven't exactly been enthusiastic here either. Most of the problems reflect that of Mat's findings aside from the aforementioned ride/handling compromise - it's a very bland place to be, and there's a general lack of refinement in the drivetrain (particularly our version's 2.0L atmo engine). The main one though is that most of the competitors he mentions, particularly the Kia Stonic, are not sold here.
The interior isn't trying too hard, it's functional and it works. The fact you can get this car with 4wd, locking diffs and independent rear suspension is also very cool for a small, cheapish car.

Matt I really respect you and admire your honest reviews, but I have to agree with most commentators that the Hyundai Kona is actually a decent cross-over which does its job without any frills, it may look slightly bland inside but the reliability a Hyundai Car gives you is all you want, so its pointless to have all those super nice and cool interior trims, navigation systems, in car entertainment system when it spends much more time at the dealer rather than on the road! I really have no idea why you are so negative to Hyundai Kona. I sat in it. It was more than ok. It was fine. The new format, new design, plastic is also ok. By the way, new Audi A1 has a similar look. Big step for Hyundai. Nice.
4:57 You know the new Audi A1 has that too? I wonder if the review will mention it. Aside from that.... The interior is still less boring than the VW group, but it's built much better. I don't care about a soft touch dash (nobody should), but the way it's put together is simply superior in the Hyundai. And the only reason to buy the Stonic is because you don't have the money to buy the 1.6 turbo. If you want the 3 cylinder, feel free to get either car. But if you want fun, the Kona is better regardless of how it looks (which doesn't bother me).
I bought the mid range Kona, and I love it! Brilliant school run car, with great road clearance for the country road. Very nippy on the motorway, and great pull away! plenty of room for three kids in the back, two on full car seats. It Is noisy, but I like that! All in all a Fun car to drive.
Glad you said that as I like this car but thought it looked too small as I have 2 children in car seats and thought it wud be a tight squeeze in the back
This car is just low budget SUV, nothing wrong with it, has a nice engine, double clutch, loads of funtionalities way more than the kia in all aspects. Aswell for this price this is a fairly decent car. This reviewing guy is just comparing this one to 50k+ SUV's from top branches like mercedes or bmw. No fair review imo.
It’s very ugly to be fair. I honestly would choose a used car over one. It has weird black plastic bits on the outside making it look like a junker. Scratchy plastic all over which is easy to scratch. This ruins your point as it you want to use it as a budget SUV that can haul people etc. I mean doing so will completely tear up the plastic on it. Overall an ugly car. Buy a Kia over this junker
The only reason you give credit to this car is because it's never been good so your expectations are really low. There are much better options available
I buy this car in 2019, the 4wd with 1.6 motor and 177 hp. I still enjoy it after 5 years, no technical problems, is a very fast easy to drive car that i still like it, i will buy it again. I drive it in very harsh condisions and never let me down. It was a very good choise for 25k
Its hard to name the "worst car" in these modern times. The car must be very horrible to be bad and this car is not it. In fact judging from other reviews, this is a class leader
He got it so wrong with his judgement of the styling. The Kona looks fantastic on the road - small, chunky, distinctive and quite attractive. The Stonic is just another anonymous blob - I can't remember the last time I noticed one.
Lol your description is absolutely perfect. I just settled on a 2020 exec 1.0. L kona . At the garage they also had a stonic . The Kona looks so much better and premium compared to the stonic . Stonic is blandness defined
Unfair review. While certainly not a car I would ever consider, it is definitely less bad than a Citroen Cactus, which got a better review. Also, your unrestrained adulation for all things VAG is starting to grate.
Steve Nagy Cactus is a good car in some ways. I had one from work and whenever I see one I miss it. But when I drove it there was no feel and worst of all the coffee cup holders so it had to go back. If my wife is going to moan every time I drive it then the car has to go. No driving feel also held it back. But still, I liked it in a way I never liked the Qashqai. It is the only car I miss having when I see it. Weird.
The design may not be everyone's taste, but it's in the eye of the beholder. The rest though, is definitely not terrible. It actually offers good value in it's segment. I don't get why would you be so unnecessarily harsh on this car
Is this intelligent satire or are you simply completely insane? Why are you calling me a moron? What did i say against your opinion? Were you forced to inhale Audi emissions too or why are you writing completely baseless insults?
this is the hyundai kona and if you want an unbiased review, you should rather avoid this video and watch the one made by TheStraightPipes - or almost everyone else - for that matter... i really like Mat's reviews, but this one is just not fair and actually just terrible really.. the main difference between the kona and the stonic is, that there's actually a 177ps automatic kona (which he should've tested so this review would actually make sense after also testing the stonic before) which you can actually get around 23k € when it's well equipped. ranting about the looks (which is pretty much about personal taste anyway) and just saying it's bad is not a review and it's not what i'm used to come from this channel at all..
OnFireGames look at Thomas’ Autogefühl’s review of the Kona, and watch how another German really likes the Kona and called it one of the best in the segment. Matt needs to grow up.
Usually i love Mat's reviews, but this seem so harsh. Every other reviewer have positive to say about Kona. I think Hyundai also messed up when they send this basic Kona to him, but he still said that "don't buy 1.6 litre turbo, because it is too expensive". Yes, 1.6T motor version is lot more expensive but you also get lot more than just motor. You get also DCT transmission, AWD and also you didn't like this 1 litre FWD suspension, with 1.6T motor you get independent suspension which is lot better. Kona with spicy 1.6 turbo motor, all wheel drive, double clutch transmission, independent suspension with one centimeter more ground clearance, full led lights etc. is in ANOTHER level compared to this entry level 1 litre FWD car. It costs more but it is still great price and value! In my country, the 1.6T AWD Kona is 3rd cheapest AWD subcompact cuv behind Suzuki Vitara and Dacia Duster. The 1.6T motor with DCT is one of the best, if not the best drivetrain in this segment!
Why can't we have a sensible, straightforward Review, from somebody not trying to be comedic, who isn't bumptiously cocky. It's a fantastic,exciting-looking car. I couldn't watch more than a minute.
Hmm if you like adding aftermarket led light strips, that fake scoop strip on the hood makes a great space to stick a strip and look like Kit from Knight Rider
Kona and Stonic don't sit on the same mechanical base. Stonic is based on the Rio, this one doesn't. Anyway, thanks to have been honest in your opinion!!!!!
Mark Collin Reyes and then you cry like a little baby because you don't like a review that is against Korean manufacturers. Buhu. I like Hyundai, but I don't like this one. It doesn't look good.
Henrik Nielsen I don't have favoritism for Korean manufacturers alright, it's just that there are worse cars that he has reviewed but have never given them an avoid rating
Personally I think scratchy plastics that are horrible to the touch are a good thing. I enjoy scratching away at the quality plastics in my VW so much that I've worn holes in the drivers door trim and above the instrument cluster.
Bassically because it’s not German, noticed the reviews on here are 80% German cars. What happened to the reviews of everyday small cheap cars? Citroen, Renault, Suzuki, Peugeot? Might not match ‘German engineering’ but at least they’re a little bit different ya know. Can’t wait for the next Audi saloon review that is pretty much identical to the last one 🙄👍
I saw one on the road and i must admit that it looks GOOD. i dont get why you hate all manufacturers except German. Atleast they making some interesting and fun type of vehicles
I've owned the Kona Premium since 2nd March. We wanted a bigger car and test drove several in this class. The Juke was tiny inside, the Captur .8 (i think it was) the retailer forced us to test drive had no power at all, the C3 Aircoss, the top spec model seemed cheap inside, the 1.6 engine was great fun though. The Crossland was extremely uncomfortable and The Mokka.... well we were all set to buy it when we happened into the Hyundai garage and saw the Kona. The looks are maybe a bit marmite but I personally love the styling of it, Tangerine Comet with the black roof looks great. The interior is very comfortable (front and rear). I've done several long journeys in mine (Penzance to Loughborough and back) no fatigue after which was unheard of in the previous car. The driving experience is very good with more than enough power in the 1 litre turbo for tbe back roads of Cornwall and Motorway driving. Lane assist, cruise control, parking camera... after several months of owning this car i can tell you that it's more than worth the money paid.
I just bought the Kona Active and I love the car im in Australia though so dunno if ours are different and he didnt mention the kick ass stereo it comes with. I test drove it and the suspension was fine plus I will be doing a lot of highway driving and it suited me fine as I have bad back and the lumber support in the front seat was really comfortable and the car feels quite sporty and it was quiet also so dunno why his was so noisy. Its also ranked as one of the best 3 small Suv's in Australia in its price range, the other 2 are the Mazda CX3 which doesnt offer the lumbar support in the drivers seat and the Honda which doesnt offer the plug and play but wins for small families so I chose the Kona because the car is just for me and it had what I was looking for and lets face it who cars about a cars interior I would much rather have a nicer exterior and the Kona while very similar in shape to other small SUVs actually looks really great on the outside.
People love getting butt hurt over Matt's reviews of Korean cars for some reason. Just because he's negative doesn't mean he's biased or has a double standard. If anything he makes a valid point that there isn't much of a reason to buy the Kona especially when its cousin, the Kia Stonic, is also in the market and does everything better, from interior material quality and feel to also having a better warranty as well. Not to mention that other cars in the same class are more well rounded vehicles so justifying the purchase of this car doesn't make much sense
You mentioned at the Geneva Motor Show in 2017 that the Hyundai Kona looks better than the Kia Stonic. But now, you've somewhat changed your mind. Weirdo!
Too negative. I agree the interior is dull, but the exterior is awesome imo. Not for everyone for sure, but enough with the convetional a decades old design. All car designers should grow a pair imo.
I do agree with most of your reviews but not sure why this car is the worst car of the year.. to me the design stands out from its rivals or at least it does not look similar to others. Stonic is a handsome car but I think in this segment Kona’s funky design suits better. Also, interior space and layout looks above average. I should test drive the car to find out how bad the suspensions are.
This is the first Matt video I have not liked. His posture says it all. All very subjective I guess. Glad to see Matt changed the title on this video. Was somewhat unprofessional but he did the right thing to change the title.
Nuhan Hidayat personally I think exterior looks quite nice if it was all colour coded it would look 10x better. Damn that interior is like Hyundai 20 years ago, nothing worse than a car with full plastic interior.
It does look a bit like they're trying to mimic the headlight design of the 2014-2018 Cherokee. Admittedly that design was hated at first but somehow became loved in a "God that Jeep is ugly lets go look at it...oh this actually isn't a terrible car" sort of way. Once that roped enough people in they changed the design for 2019 to be much more handsome. Not quite sure Hyundai can repeat that magic.
inside it's not only black my friend, you can choose colours to break monochromy..i sit back (i am 1.83 height ,i dont know yours) and it was just fine. i test drive the car and i didnt hear anything (only in town) .the 1.0 version 120ps i't ok if you don't need a fast car to run (engine is nervous at slow, medium speed that i test it).i think it will be my next purchase.keep going, you have so fun but this car has the best vfm and you didnt say AND 5 years guaranty as any other gives..
Cerwyn Lewis hyundai stole the single frame grill design from audi lol. And the difference between this and the a1 is that the a1 actually looks good but i see you have a very good imagination when you relate this to an audi so i cant really take you serious
Except it’s better, when I bought my wife one we looked at both, the kona is also better equipt and quicker 0-62. Me and her demoed the stonic 1.0 of which just stopped at the traffic light and wouldn’t start again, in fact we had to call the dealership half way through our test drive and then had to have an AA van tow us 3 miles back to the dealership, bearing in mind at this stage this Kia only had 2000 ish miles on the clock. Whereas kona lasted the full 6 months and 8,000 miles we had it flawlessly. My I add the kona is quicker 0-62 and has cooled and heated seats, whereas in the stonic doesn’t even have heated unless you pay extra for it
I generally love your reviews but this one has a weird negative vibe to it. I just bought a 2019 kona 1.6 with AWD and all the options. It is a fantastic car and so fun to drive. I agree that lower trim level versions of the kona do not look as good as the higher ones (like almost every car), but in general the kona is a very, very good car.
Sorry Mat, I think the Kona is better looking than the stonic. I think Mat don't think likes Hyundai as he don't give them good reviews. I think they should have another reviewer to give Mat some time off.
It’s certainly not the worst car Matt. There’re plenty more cars worse than this. An Asian spec Toyota could be called in such a manner if you’re considering the “boring interior” and pointless designed exterior
They could’ve fitted something inside that matched the outside, just to make it more colourful. Like some detailing on the steering wheel or something on the seats
Damn, didn't know this guy was such a hater. Comparing a compact SUV to a ford Fiesta for handling?! Not a lot of strong arguments. Hyundai's are across the board more well built than kias so their is a price premium to the stonic
because it feels like a small car rather than an SUV from the driver's position point of view and he is a spot on - you just sit SLIGHTLY higher than in your super mini which is a shame as it's jsut a car that pretending to be an SUV
I don’t think the car looks too bad at all, rather a lot of black plastic on the outside, but detailing seems fine really. I did find the sarky review pretty funny tbh, in a sort of old-school “Loaded” kinda way. What I was most surprised about was comparisons to fiesta etc. I had no idea it was that small, so... it’s like a shrunk-down suv then??

I buy this car in 2019, the 4wd with 1.6 motor and 177 hp. I still enjoy it after 5 years, no technical problems, is a very fast easy to drive car that i still like it, i will buy it again. I drive it in very harsh condisions and never let me down. It was a very good choise for 25k
Soooo many better cars you could get for that price 😂
@@reececlarke1996 maybe, but i get this one and i am happy about it. The video was about kona and i gave my review. Thank you!
@@reececlarke1996 He enjoyed it..... that is what matters.... no need to laugh, troll.
Its hard to name the "worst car" in these modern times. The car must be very horrible to be bad and this car is not it. In fact judging from other reviews, this is a class leader
You meant at worst? Bcs if it's average at best then it could be the worser?
PFFFF plenty of Renaults, Citroens, Vauxhaulls, Peugeots and Dacias that could get that title. This car is GOOD
@@Firemarioflower and Skodas and Fiats as well! Kia is the 👑
@@dinohermann1887 This is a Hyundai, bud..... i like this a lot more than the Stonic.
Fiats and Skodas are alright, waht are you talking about.
@@Firemarioflower Fiats are unreliable pos! Skoda is just ugly, especially on the exterior! Kia is the 👑 like I said!
I've been waiting for this video for so long since I saw your insta post
He got it so wrong with his judgement of the styling. The Kona looks fantastic on the road - small, chunky, distinctive and quite attractive. The Stonic is just another anonymous blob - I can't remember the last time I noticed one.
Lol your description is absolutely perfect. I just settled on a 2020 exec 1.0. L kona . At the garage they also had a stonic . The Kona looks so much better and premium compared to the stonic . Stonic is blandness defined
Funny, most reviewers score this one of the best in class in Europe. Looks like Mat had his mind made up before he even started the review..
Weird.
@@Ag3nt0fCha0s I'm sorry but you're a bit vague here, what exactly was wrong with the coffee cup holders?
That reflector in 4:32 is there because the Kona is sold in the US as well.
You better watch out Matt I think you just made Arya Starks kill list.
The design may not be everyone's taste, but it's in the eye of the beholder. The rest though, is definitely not terrible. It actually offers good value in it's segment. I don't get why would you be so unnecessarily harsh on this car
Well on euro ncap kia stonic have 3 star rating and hyundai kona 5! Plus it is wider then Kia,and no,it is not ugly!
I am getting the premium kona and it’s great to drive and it’s a really chill car inside x
4:57 - 5:06 I wonder if he will be allowed to say the same about the new Audi A1 (has the same fake vent)...
Mgoblagulkablong You’re so cute little shithead. Searching the whole internet for ways to shit on the A1. Get a job du Lauch.
Carwow didn’t get enough money from Hyundai? Worst car of the year seems bit biased.
The worst part about this review is that you recommend the Kia stonic which is the lesser model of this exact car
I don't think it's exterior is ugly and I don't think the interior is boring
I think this looks so much better than the Stonic!
Local reviewers from korea praised the driving performance. but your review is unexpected
So why it's the worst car??
Balaji Karthi Only he knows.
Because it ain't German.
Because apparently it looks bad. Not imo tho
Because the germans wanted him to say that.
Because it not a Jaguar
I can expect people start giving negative comments but come on..Mat is doing his job.
0:34 Interesting to see Hyundai now sell this "starting from £21,625", an increase of 31.5% Not far off the price hike of Lurpak.
You should review the Hyundai Kona electric premium
Kona and Stonic don't sit on the same mechanical base. Stonic is based on the Rio, this one doesn't.
Anyway, thanks to have been honest in your opinion!!!!!
Unsubbed, this is the 2nd time I've seen a biased review against Korean manufacturers. 👎
Even the guys from TheStraightPipes gave the Kona a good review.
its got nothing to do with that, which is obviously shown when he suggested a different korean car soo...
A true petrol-head Its not uncomfortable, even other reviewers don't say the suspensions of the kona has bad ride quality
For a website that sells cars... way to go! 😂😂😂
Sorry, mate, we all can't afford to drive a Porsche!
Most reviews of the Kona have been pretty positive. Maybe Mat was having a bad day.
Exterior & interior looks absolutely boring, the headlamps that looks like old Jeep Cherokee looks awful 🤢
Nuhan Hidayat personally I think exterior looks quite nice if it was all colour coded it would look 10x better. Damn that interior is like Hyundai 20 years ago, nothing worse than a car with full plastic interior.
+ Mazda cx3 design...
Oh come on, if you had a bit more money you would never have to buy something like this, so don’t bother, life’s too short
They tried to copy a Cactus. And failed spectacularly.
What do you mean lost his touch ??? The car looks amazing and timeless design
The Kona is a good car. I hate this review.
inside it's not only black my friend, you can choose colours to break monochromy..i sit back (i am 1.83 height ,i dont know yours) and it was just fine. i test drive the car and i didnt hear anything (only in town) .the 1.0 version 120ps i't ok if you don't need a fast car to run (engine is nervous at slow, medium speed that i test it).i think it will be my next purchase.keep going, you have so fun but this car has the best vfm and you didnt say AND 5 years guaranty as any other gives..
It's so bad Audi decided to use the front end for its new Audi A1
Someone likes the new A1?
Hahahaha love it
Cerwyn Lewis nice joke. Not
Have you seen the new A1?
My I add the kona is quicker 0-62 and has cooled and heated seats, whereas in the stonic doesn’t even have heated unless you pay extra for it
He's designed lambos and he's still designing today so...
That comment about sisters at the start was unnecessarily out of order.
First time I've heard you say 'AVOID'
Eat less cakes!!!!
That's not a good thing
I love cakes...
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Best funny segment in a long time
Jeez it doesn’t look THAT bad lol
The most ugliest car that I have ever seen
Lovely review mate, thanks!
I like hearing someone's opinion, I can still make my own. Good job as always Matt.
Sounds like Matt hasn't been paid to review this one
What do you expect from Kona, it's a cheaper version of Tuscon. For the price, it's good and it will give a lot of people savings.
Sorry Mat, I think the Kona is better looking than the stonic. I think Mat don't think likes Hyundai as he don't give them good reviews. I think they should have another reviewer to give Mat some time off.
very unbiased review. this car is much better than Matt thinks. Hyundai doesn't pay you ?
It’s a beautiful car. You must be looking at a different car to me!
The car Walter White would drive if Breaking Bad was filmed in 2018...
it seems to me that you just hate this car but you didn't find enough reasons to explain exactly why. Try to be more professional next time.
please review the electric kona
It’s certainly not the worst car Matt. There’re plenty more cars worse than this. An Asian spec Toyota could be called in such a manner if you’re considering the “boring interior” and pointless designed exterior
8:37 That's not a Swedish krona, it's Danish!
with carwow reviews
You can easily tell when did brand paid extra money to have objective review and when they didn't pay that much xD
They could’ve fitted something inside that matched the outside, just to make it more colourful. Like some detailing on the steering wheel or something on the seats
Matt, your review is so, so biased. not fair to the car, not fair to the viewer either. unsubscribed.
Damn that Murci looks epic.
are u really complaining about the fucking entry level version.
Nice one Matt
Damn, didn't know this guy was such a hater. Comparing a compact SUV to a ford Fiesta for handling?!
Not a lot of strong arguments. Hyundai's are across the board more well built than kias so their is a price premium to the stonic
I wouldn’t have a Fiesta as a gift 🤮🤮🤮🤮
because it feels like a small car rather than an SUV from the driver's position point of view and he is a spot on - you just sit SLIGHTLY higher than in your super mini which is a shame as it's jsut a car that pretending to be an SUV
very cool i love this channel
It looks alright! Not sure why he was so pissed at it :P
Hyundai KKona
KKool Clap
I KKONAt be more disappointed :/
Yee Haa
Hell yea brother!
shouldnt have laughed at this but i did 🤔🤔🤔
