I have retired at 63, now 66. Slowly getting there. Going on a caravan trip to Bilbao , so very grateful for your videos. I love the notebook idea. But find it hard too keep going every day. But the best is, that it doesn't matter. You just start again . No matter how many days or weeks you missed.
We absolutely loved northern Spain - both on the coast and inland in the Picos de Europa mountains. If you get the chance to visit the centre of Bilbao one day - do it! The Guggenheim museum architecture was stunning and a really lovely atmosphere walking by the river. Have a great trip. Richard loves his notebooks and like you say - it doesn’t matter how you use them! Thanks for watching 😊
I'm quite new to your channel. Firstly let me say I've relay bought into your openess and quality grounded views on retirement. I've planned so much to getting to that date that I now find myself without any goals hereafter. Your channel has inspired and evoked a new 'persona' waiting to burst out and onwards. Going through your early videos now. This particular early morning routine has kicked started my thinking. Thank you again
Many thanks for these kind words Victor- they are very much appreciated! Welcome to the channel😀 I know that not everyone agrees that we need goals in ER, but I am a firm believer in them and they have really helped keep our focus and identity in ER. Starting my day off positively has always been a major priority for me during working life, and that hasn't changed in ER. It is one way that I make sure I look after my wellbeing. Hope you enjoy our other videos. Many thanks for the comment👍
I retired at 60 .. retired for nearly a year. I use Duolingo too. I'm trying German and so is my daughter. We test each other and it keeps the brain active..you have a great channel 👍
A great video Richard. Lots of useful tips. I like your organized approach. I do many of these things and since watching your video will look at including journaling and some meditation. I’m a retired teacher and also embrace the practice of life long learning.
Thanks for the lovely feedback Kim- it is always nice to hear that some things resonate. You will love the journey of meditation and journaling...it really has transformed what I do and how I feel. Something as simple as noting down daily gratitudes has such a positive impact. Glad to hear your views on lifelong learning...retirement is such a blessing as we have more time to devote to learning for us as individuals. Have a great day.
Im 52 next month and saving as much as i can to hopefully retire early. I think your videos have some great ideas that i will be following in retirement. Keep the videos coming
I love that - you get so much done! When I had “all my ducks in a row” my morning routine was in place. A couple of big life hiccups knocked it sideways and I’ve really struggled to get it going again. It makes such a difference - the exercise, the journaling and a plan for the day really helped me to feel in control and on track. Maybe you’ve just given me the push to build it up again…
Hi Jo, many thanks for this. Apologies it has taken a while to reply...life really does get in the way sometimes! I hope that our little video has helped you with a desired nudge- I know that when my morning routine goes awry...it can be hard to get back that feeling of control for the rest of the day. If it is any use, I treat falling off the routine is a natural thing, with each day being a fresh start. Best of luck. R.
It's amazing how we never quite believe that the ducks won't STAY in their row once we finally line them up. Every single time, we get a fresh surprise.
Interesting video. I'm with Jackie on the 'getting up early' thing! Lay-in's are the best! My routine is to read the newspaper and get angry at the world with a cup of tea in bed. Then i try and reduce the anger with some stretches, 30 press ups, 25 squats and a 75 second plank!
Love the fact that we are all different. Jackie loves her routine just as much as I do mine! Love the body weight work- that is going to be my next development once I have got my stretching nailed. Have a great day. R
I too love an early morning start. Quiet time for breakfast, a good coffee, feeding the birds, and enjoying the view outside and the solitude of the moment. I am enjoying your channel. Thank-you for your posts.
Hi Jeff- thanks for this comment. There is no better time than in the early morning- I just love it. Even 18 months into retirement, I am still loving getting up with the larks. It is when I am most productive! Glad you are enjoying the channel. Have a good one, R.
Stumbled across your channel and have been working my way through your planning/advice/update videos. I took early retirement three years ago at 52. My husband is still working with the aim initially of reducing his hours and then fully retiring in the next few years. although we have clear financial plans in place to do this, I have realised we need other plans so that we dont waste the opportunities we will have and are clear where we will live and what we will do with our time when we are both retired so your videos are helping me focus on this. Ps I think my morning routine sounds more like Jackie’s! I’m a night owl rather than a morning lark and my day starts with a coffee in bed 😂
Thanks for watching our videos and glad they have been of some use! We have always been goal setters in the new year and we think carefully in each different aspect of our life what we want to achieve - family, travel, learning, social… which really helps keep us on track. Happy retirement. I am glad someone is more similar to me in their retirement 😊
somehow this came up on my feed, probably has something to do with what i research. i enjoyed your morning routine video- i will now play catch up with your other videos. cheers,
It has really given me focus and structure to my journaling each day. I love how it really emphasises daily gratitude. There’s no harm in giving it a go as each journal covers about 6 months.
Thank u for this! I have struggled for a good year to find my morning routine. My issue was I spent the first few hours reading with a pot of tea! It was heaven… but unfortunately taking that much time right at the start left me lazy as the day progressed! I have since cut that time way back… but after a few hours of early morning gardening… I give myself a nice reading break then! One thing I did right was make sure I had at least one… but no more than 3 social time with friends! I plan ahead so my calandar always has someone on it each week to enjoy time with.
Some great ideas Robert- thanks for the tips. I agree with the reading point, as now I tend to get sucked into my books and time just disappears...but that is no bad thing if you are loving what you do. Likewise one of my guilty pleasures is a pot of tea in an afternoon to just physically slow down. It's absolute bliss. I wish I could be committed to the gardening time- but it just doesn't float my boat as much as I may try. Thanks for the comment. 👍 R
I’m loving your videos. I would love to retire but funds don’t allow at the minute. I’m shortly taking a break from my job for a few months and currently planning my future routine during this time, so this has been really helpful! I’m very like you and like an organised, structure to my day. I started to get into the Miracle Morning a few years ago but life events knocked me off course. I noticed from another video that you listen to Mel Robbins - she’s done a great episode recently about three things to start your day. You’ll be shocked by one of them, as I was, being a coffee lover too but I’m giving it a shot!
Thanks for watching and I am glad you have found our videos of some use. I have to admit, that I pick and choose advice and research that best fits my circumstances. I understand all the modern science about coffee in a morning... but I just love my morning coffee! Hope your plans for a long break from work give you the time and space that you want.
Really enjoyed this, so much done in tiny bite sized pieces. I do many of the things you do, but with no consistency. You’re absolutely right about the compound effect of daily habits, and I’ll try to do better!
Hi Brendan- James Clear (Atomic Habits) really has hit the nail on the head! Every habit completed adds to the compound effect- don't beat yourself up if you miss every so often- the overall effect will still be positive. I am guilty of this too😉 Thanks for the comment. R
Hi, not retired yet but started Duolingo for our motorhome trips to France. We have just managed to get up to date with yours and Jackie’s videos and are loving your tips for our plans to retire. Did you or jackie paint the art in your cottage, I really like them
Hi Samantha- I love a bit of Duolingo and it is all down to one of our subscribers on TH-cam! Hope that the planning for your retirement is going well- it can be quite daunting, but is actually quite fun looking back on it! Neither Jackie or I have an artistic bone in our bodies- but thanks for the compliment! We love art as observers and have collected bits and pieces on our travels that remind us of our happy places. Have a fab day. R
A word on mobility, and flexibility. Bodies are sneaky, cunning things, so it's best to change your mobility or flexibility exercises regularly. Otherwise, you'll a) stop seeing and feeling results and b) get bored.
Thanks for these wise words...so true! Coming from a CrossFit background I absolutely believe in constantly varied training...even though I find getting motivated for mobility work really quite tough. Have a great weekend👍
Love your channel, find it inspiring and relaxing. I’ve noticed your kettle, any recommendations, been wanting to get a whistle kettle for sometime, it’s nostalgic.
There is a story about the kettle! With a small kitchen I wanted a stove top kettle as it needed less work top space and plugs. I saw this one in an outlet mall in Pheonix when we were in the USA last year and bought it back in my luggage as it is a shape that la creuset don’t sell in the UK. We love it! I am pretty sure the baggage X-ray machine must have been very confused!🤣 thanks for watching our channel x
Great video Richard. My husband and I do Duolingo too. Great little app. He does French and I do German to cover all bases for our motor homing travels. I love the idea of your journalling.
Thanks for this- I love Duolingo but I am finding it really hard going remembering all the vocabulary- I think it goes a bit quick for my brain! I have journaled for a number of years in a range of different formats, but I am loving the simple structure of the 6 minute diary. R
Thanks for this Alex, I'm glad you found it of use. You will probably realise that most of the ideas have been begged, borrowed or stolen from people much wiser than me! If there is anything that you can take, that makes the effort of doing the video worthwhile. Have a great day. R
At 58 I’m behind you but this is so useful. I feel a bit more confident having watched this and your declutter vlog to do it. Cannot believe how bogged down I am! One issue I have is magazines! Either bought or from clubs/charities. I find there are things I want to read, learn about, am interested in but just don’t have the time to read them. I have piles of mags and they are upsetting me. Some are really old walking mags with amazing pics and walks in. I feel if I get rid of them then those walks, hills, beaches will disappear, I might forget they are there etc. Living in hampshire, there is no wildness close by so I feel like these mags are a comfort….. how to deal with this?
Hi Helen, thanks for this- we are glad that you have found something of use. I used to be an absolute hoarder of old outdoor magazines- keeping them precisely for the same reason as you...just in case. When we downsized, they were some of the first things to be discarded as in reality we never referred back to them. The only magazines we now keep are ones that we have written articles for...we want to keep a bit of a legacy of our writing for the kids. One solution that has really helped is that we now have a Readily subscription that allows us access to digital copies of a whole range of magazines. I now have an online back catalogue of so many outdoor magazines should I ever need it. The monthly subscription is not too bad and has actually saved us money when magazines are now seemingly £5 and upwards! It is great for on the road as I have downloaded copies of what we want to read ready to go. Hope this helps? R
Hi Richard and Jackie, thanks for these fab videos. Great advice in all your videos and good to sense check what other people are doing. I wondered if there is a particular YT video you'd recommend for the flexibility workout? I did a search and so many come up, all slightly different, that it gets a bit "can't see the wood for the trees!" Cheers and I look forward to seeing more videos from you guys. Colin
Hi Colin, Glad that you are enjoying the videos. I'm a bit like you that I struggled to see the wood from the trees on TH-cam mobility videos. What I ended up doing was refining my search to videos that had a short 10 minute routine, that was easy to recall day after day and focused on my areas of development- namely ankles, hips, lower back and shoulders. I have managed to find the routine that I still mainly use each day and it is here: th-cam.com/video/sOuKeVuej9E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lYjIh2LgRYKB3BGg I love the simplicity of this video and the major joints that it targets. I work on the principle that if I find a stretch that works for me, I keep it and add it to my list (in my notebook obs😂). The thing I have found with mobility development is that the consistency of daily mobility work is more important than the actual stretches I choose to do. Have a good time experimenting, R
@@earlyretirementwanderlust Morning Richard, really appreciate the reply and I've looked at the suggested link and will be starting it this week. I was made redundant a few years ago and so decided to start early retirement - although a few years older than your good selves and able to access a couple of pensions. Your journey has been very similar where you test and try things and see how they fit into your new life. And you do need to create new routines otherwise it is very easy to lose consistency on things like exercise, health & well-being and actually finding the time to fit things in. 😎 And never downplay the power of the notebook - it's my "project book" for my retirement. All the best, Colin
Thanks for the reply Alan...apologies I have only just got to this. What you talk about is very sensible and something that we are finding more and more as we explore this crazy world of early retirement😂 It sounds twee- but it really is an adventure isn't it? Always nice to hear from fellow notebook lovers😉 Have a good one. R
Doulingo doit fonctionner ! Merci pour le commentaire. La vie est vraiment trop courte. R
Love this Richard - I do some of these but find it hard to stick to them, especially when life gets busy. As a fellow coffee snob ☺️ I’m interested in what you do for coffee when in the campervan?
Hi Gary- thanks for your comment. You may have realised that I have to resort to a range of things to keep me accountable and on it. It's true that it only takes about 21 days to embed a habit, but that is easier said than done! Re the coffee- we are planning a van coffee video in the near future as it really does bring us both a lot of joy...how sad is that? I was gifted a snowpeaks coffee grinder and travel coffee dripper which we absolutely love and use on a daily basis in the van, but also have a range of different methods that we equally love. Have a great day. R
@@earlyretirementwanderlust yes accountability is key - I'll have to work on that 21 day target! Great I'll look forward to that van coffee video, I love it when things I'm interested in overlap - early retirement, campervans and coffee :-) My go to portable coffee solution is Aeropress.
Thanks. I generally look for different TH-cam stretch and mobility videos based around ankles hips and shoulders as those are my weak areas as I get older.
Another excellent video Richard 👍I also try to have a routine, but I've been doing some house and dog sitting so it's not always possible as I am not always in the same place - however, after watching this, I'm going to try to incorporate some mobility exercises each day - do you have a link to the routine that you follow? Thanks, Andrew.
Hey Andrew- thanks for the comment. I pinched a simple routine from here: th-cam.com/video/sOuKeVuej9E/w-d-xo.html and it is serving me well in getting into the habit of daily mobility work. I have taken all the easy options as I am as stiff as a board- but it is definitely working. Travelling often gets in the way of my mobility work as I am far too self conscious to do it out and about or at other peoples houses...but I do find keeping a log of my latest run of stretching does keep me on it. Have a great day. R
Inspiring! Wondering how you do or adapt this routine when away in the van? Do you accept that this time is different or do you just do what you can or approach it differently? You have also reminded me that achieving a lot of our life goals in the last 18 minths means some more conversations to set more goals for the next few years - thanks
Hi - thanks for this lovely feedback. I try to keep the routine as consistent as possible as we spend so much time travelling, but inevitably in such a small van, tweaks need to be made. In the winter months morning stretching and circuits are almost impossible to do, unless I can find a quiet indoor space- you may have seen some of the strange places I resorted to doing by 100 push-ups a day in November- the campsite washing up room was particularly memorable! For all the meditation and gratitude journalling, I find that the van is a happy place for me. To try and avoid disturbing Jackie, I tend to get up and sit in the reversed passenger seat with a blanket if it is cold. If it's really cold in the depths of winter, I do all of that from the bed, under a warm duvet! Isn't it amazing how quick 18 months can go- you can do so much in that time. We are currently planning some videos on reflection, goal setting and action planning for the New Year. Is it really sad that I am looking forward to sitting down and reviewing our goals from last year and looking forward to 2024 and beyond???? Good luck with your plans. So exciting! R
@@earlyretirementwanderlust Look forward to seeing those. I've found a few times in my life that we achieved key goals and then stagnated without direction for a while, so don't want to fall into that trap again. Took the dog for a long walk yesterday after watching your vlog and had a great talk about it and came home with new ideas and starting writing some fresh new goals - already feels energising! We've just sold our T6.1 and waiting for a Crafter conversion for that little more space and self sufficiency and will be doing some more & longer trips in '24 with a goal to hit Europe as well. We have a Staffie and they come with various restrictions in a lot of the EU so its put us off until now but that will change.... One thing I started that you might enjoy was brain training apps - watching my parents slide into dementia has reminded me of the need for continual brain stimulation and I've found 10 mins of these apps daily has been a great sharpener as well as fun!
Many thanks for the comment. Journaling really is one of the things that has brought me the most comfort over the last few years. I would advocate it to anyone thinking about it. The 6 minute diary is so easy to build into a day and brings real positivity to the start and end of each day. Timings are about 10 mins calm app, 5 mins coffee make, 5 mins journal, 5 mins stretch and then as long as I want on my creative stuff. I do keep it going even when in the van, but I have to be much quieter as Jackie is normally still asleep. Stretching has to be done outside...but only in dry! Have a good one. R
Hi Phil. I started building these routines when I was in work as it was the only way to keep me sane in my last few years. Getting up early for some quiet time and gratitude journaling really kept me grounded. Thanks for the lovely comment. R

I have managed to find the routine that I still mainly use each day and it is here:
th-cam.com/video/sOuKeVuej9E/w-d-xo.htmlsi=lYjIh2LgRYKB3BGg
I love the simplicity of this video and the major joints that it targets.
Always nice to hear from fellow notebook lovers😉
Have a good one.
Thank you for sharing ! which mobility routine do you follow ?
I like the idea of journaling, not currently doing this.
How long does your routine take and do you keep up with it when travelling in the van?
Many thanks for the comment. Journaling really is one of the things that has brought me the most comfort over the last few years. I would advocate it to anyone thinking about it. The 6 minute diary is so easy to build into a day and brings real positivity to the start and end of each day. Timings are about 10 mins calm app, 5 mins coffee make, 5 mins journal, 5 mins stretch and then as long as I want on my creative stuff.
I do keep it going even when in the van, but I have to be much quieter as Jackie is normally still asleep. Stretching has to be done outside...but only in dry! Have a good one. R
Really sound things, even for me who's still very much at work!! Ha
Hi Phil. I started building these routines when I was in work as it was the only way to keep me sane in my last few years. Getting up early for some quiet time and gratitude journaling really kept me grounded. Thanks for the lovely comment. R
You could get yourself a paper round
