- Tihar (Nepali: तिहार), also known as Deepawali and Yamapanchak or Swanti (Nepal Bhasa: स्वन्ती:), is a five-day-long Hindu festival celebrated in Nepal and Indian states of Sikkim and West Bengal, particularly the towns of Darjeeling and Kalimpong, which host a large number of ethnic Nepali people. Tihar is analogous to the Indian festival of Diwali, the festival of lights, but with some significant differences. Like with Diwali, Tihar is marked by lighting diyas inside and outside the home but unlike the Indian festival, the five days of Tihar include celebration and worship of the four creatures associated with the Hindu god of death Yama, with the final day reserved for people themselves.According to the Vikram Samvat calendar, the festival begins with Kaag (crow) Tihar on Trayodashi of Kartik Krishna Paksha (the 13th day of the waning moon) and ends with Bhai (brother) Tika on Dwitiya of Kartik Sukla Paksha every year.In the Gregorian calendar, the festival falls sometime between October and November every year. In the year 2020, Tihar begins on 16 November 2020 and ends on 20 November 2020.

We celebrate bhaitika from our historic period ... when our kind Balihang was very sick and there was no hope at that time as his loving sister came to him and take care for him as she realizes he is struggling for his life and she prayed for god n she used oil on the ground around his brother, she put seven colours tika and she choose garland of makhamali flower. After that when yamraj came to take his soul at that time she prayed and prayed she begged as he can take him but in one condition that after the oil mark vanished, sven colours faded and after the garland that she made out of makhamali flower damaged..... as yamraj waited n waited for years n years but the oil mark was not faded, seven colours stayed the same and the garland never shradded because makhamali is the flower which will be dried but not damaged as years passed by his brother also gained good condition in helath as at last yamraj realises this and gave his words for to leave Balihang in good condition.... thats why he was good and rescued and we used to do pooja of ground nut n after we destroy it as yamraj. As according to old danthey katha beause of Balihang was ok or in good health as he send some of his men and women to spread the news to tell every people that he is fine n thaking all for praying for the king.... as we celebrate bhailo n deusi saying balima raja ley payhayeko thats why we goes to door n door singing this song as after that all the people were happg they lighted whatever they had they gave that messangers food, money what they can ......

The year (2020) seems to be such a disappointment for almost everyone and in everything. In our bengali ritual generally we do tilak on our brother's forehead with sandlewood paste in bhaidoj, we call it BHAI PHOTA. But in the year 2020 we were not allowed to do the tilak with sandlewood paste, instead we had to do it with curd and that was the first time I did it with curd. SUCH A WEIRD YEAR 2020 WAS. Really wish and pray that we don't have to face any more time like that.
This is the first time I'm watching so many rituals of Nepalese. Thanks a lot for sharing these with us.
