Thank you for posting this review! It's so gratifying when people discover and enjoy Hardy. The two novels you might want to avoid are Tess of the d'Ubervilles and Jude the Obscure. They are very tragic and delve into some very depressing themes. In fact, Hardy quit writing novels after Jude the Obscure because of the critical and public backlash against how depressing it was. Have to say though, they are my favorite Hardy novels. I'm a glutton for punishment, I guess. I love Far From the Madding Crowd, too. Bathsheba Everdene is a great protagonist. Barely in her twenties she goes from being a dispossessed orphan to Lady farmer. She tries her best to navigate that transition while maintaining her independence. She makes a lot of mistakes along the way, but don't we all? Well worth reading! And since you're a Gabriel Oak fan I recommend watching the 2015 film adaptation. Matthias Schoenaerts embodies that character extremely well.

I saw the 2015 Far from the Maddening Crowd. I just don't remember it. Hmmm.
I've read Return of the Native (saw an adaptation, too) and think I've seen one for Under the Greenwood Tree (did not read that one).
I don't think I read Far from the Maddening Crowd, though. Hardy is kind of a mood read for me. I've liked and disliked the same book depending on when I read it. Weird.

I get that. I'm the same about what sort of mood I'm in for certain authors, too.

The 1967 film is beautiful, with Julie Christie and Alan Bates, one of my favourite films. Reading far from the maddening crowd now, it's wonderful to get transported back in time through the pages of the book.

Were you the one who told me to start there? Someone mentioned that was a good place to start. I have a whole stack of books on my nightstand right now, but I told my son this morning I think I'm going to ignore them for now and go ahead and read Under the Greenwood Tree. Maybe I can start it tonight- I'll keep you posted.

@@mitzireadsandwrites Yes I did, but I might not have been the only one. I love his writing and this is just a simple story. Not that I love the ending. I have not read Jude or Tess because of what everyone says, so I will read them last.

Thomas Hardy does break your heart. 😂 Tess of the d’Urbervilles will break your heart. 💔 I read The Mayor of Casterbridge in high school and wrote a term paper on it. I enjoyed both. I want to read Far From the Madding Crowd because I want to watch the movie from 2015.

I enjoyed your review of FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD very much! I love the book and I have seen all three of the film adaptations of the book. The one from '67, I think, is good with Julie Christie. The one that you said you saw is my favorite - the Masterpiece one - because I think that Nathaniel Parker is the most perfect Gabriel Oak! I think I saw a later video of yours that said you like the newer one better, but I do not like Shepard Oak in the new one! Nathaniel Parker to me was so perfect! I've also read UNDER THE GREENWOOD TREE and I loved it, and the movie of that is wonderful, so I hope you've seen it! it's just darling! The film adaptation of RETURN OF THE NATIVE is wonderful, also! I read that one, too. One of my favorites! I've read many of Hardy's books. He's a favorite!

Thomas Hardy and I have a love hate relationship for the exact reasons you give. I love his beautiful writing. His descriptions of nature and people are out of this world. You read about a character taking a walk and you swear that you took it yourself. I've not read Far from the Madding Crowd but I have watched the sixties version of the book. Julie Christie is in it. Her soldier is so handsome. You will love Under the Greenwood Tree. It is a happy book. I think he wrote that one on a fluke and wasn't paying attention when he wrote the ending. I'm glad he wasn't. It is sweet and funny. You will like Return of the Native as well. If you know what you are getting, you will know what to expect at the end.

Hey Mitzi! I loved your review! I have not read it yet but I love the 2015 movie so much I've watched it several times. I adore the cast, especially the actor who plays Gabriel Oak! (Matthias Schoenaerts). My husband bought me the Folio Society version for my birthday last year and I've been meaning to get to it. But if she was a narcissist Gabriel is in for a miserable marriage. I think he idolized who he wanted her to be. Or idolized her looks? This is one of the reasons I liked the book. There's so much to think about. =)

Under the Greenwood Tree is probably Hardy’s lightest book and I really enjoyed it a lot. The Woodlanders is another one to check out on your Hardy journey, the sense of place in that one is just palpable.
