Does it appear, to anyone else, at 1:38/1:39, like she's in two places at once ? by the intertwining white patterns & decor of the walls, it looks like she's at Vronsky's... yet, the blue of the room is also used as the backdrop for when she's at home, with her husband... I wonder if this effect was intentional? It just seems, to me, by the way the camera is angled, and the way she speaks directly at us, the viewers, it's like she's speaking to us, directly... not to Vronsky, nor to her husband... it's a very, very intimate picture of Anna... and the fact that she speaks directly to us {the audience}, is of pivotal significance... (We know that Anna is happy to be pregnant with Vronsky's child, yet we, as the audience, also get a sense of foreboding/eeriness, knowing that her happiness will be short-lived, by her own demise, of course)
I believe she is referring to the part inside of her that is unpredictable and negatively influences her perspective so that she sees things from a dark viewpoint (jealousy, anger). We all as humans have this part inside of us, but it is braught out into being depending on what situation we find ourselves in. Anna is a very emotional and passionate woman and people like this tend to be more linked to their darker side (you could even look into the Myers Briggs "Shadow Type" concept to understand more). Because she finds herself in a tricky situation and she loves Vronsky so much, her "demon" (the negative side of her personality and thoughts) is braught out in the form of her being angry with Vronsky and telling him things she otherwise wouldn't.
I think it is her attacking herself for speaking up the truth as it really is. She calls this "demon" as women were taught to shut up and never disapprove or judge. I'd say she just expresses her observations and speaks out her emotions.

In the book it's mentioned that they both started calling Anna's emotional outbreaks of jealousy, anxiety, anger etc. "her demon". I think they called it that since they saw it as something ruining their happiness without reason, and as Anna not really being herself in those moments like something dark possessing her (not literally obviously).

What makes her depraved is her sheer level of selfishness, desperation and the lengths she is willing to go to for carnal pleasure. And yes it was just hedonism.
I do agree, reading the book and to some extent the film as well shows a very unique twist, at first making us empathise with Anna being trapped in a loveless arranged marriage, seeking the prospect of freedom and bliss with a young and adorising new lover...Only to have it flip around in the second half and make us realise that Karenin did love her, in his own way, and her refusal to choose a side, both wanting the freedom and love from Vronsky and the luscious life and reputation that was bestowed on her thanks to Karenin, only made life more miserable for all parties involved. Her large ambivalence towards how her children would be seen or taken care of in the aftermath apart from in crucial moments when karenin makes it clear he's 'taking' something from her is also very telling-ultimately it was only about her always trying to seek more, that little something else that would make all the difference and change everything, but I think no matter what she found she would never have found happiness in the end.
@@AmyJiang Exactly, a lesson I got from the book was if you aren’t able to find happiness in yourself you will never find it in others. There needs to be some level of self acceptance (or religious) and Anna just never found it she just runs from her problems or drowns them out

It is hard to notice at first, but the first time we have seen Karenin in the book is after Anna had already fallen in love with Vronsky, and we mostly see Karenin through her eyes ...so her descriptions of Karenin and their marriage is unreliable at best.
She completely deserved it. Her selfishness and depravity reached its limits and even a perfectly reasonable and calm man like Karenin is entitled to his own outbursts. All that happens to Anna are consequences of her own actions…

Oblonsky was a buffoonish villain, imo, but I don’t really think LT was going for comedic writing, but I see that you, like LT, are Russian, so I am limited to reading translations of LT’s novels.
Did I read the book wrongly ? When i was reading this scene, in my head, Anna was calmer and more thoughtful, but here she seems a bit bipolar.. I probably imagined it incorrectly, idk🤔

A Pregnant Woman's hormones are all over the place... I see it here but she felt guilty for having her thoughts said out loud as she did.
