A lot of these old PC games had music which would sound very different depending on the midi device you were using to play it (not sure if that's technically the most accurate way to phrase it). Two different sound devices could both sound good with this type of music but both sound significantly different. It was really neat. Of course, some still sounded a lot better than others. I had a Sound Blaster AWE64 I think it was called, which was a very late generation ISA sound card, and this type of music sounded fantastic on it.
