Marley gave songwriting credits for this song to his friend Vincent Ford who ran the soup kitchen in his neighbourhood so the royalties would help him continue his work. Now, that's a legend!

Im 15 and am saddened to say that my generation only seems to remember this great person for his tendency to smoke weed. No one seems to remember his true nature and what he's done.

Awesome. Why do people associate him with weed and not with all the activism he was into? How he stood up for his people and humanity? THAT'S the wonder of this man, not that he smoked.

Baily Emmett Everyone associates him with weed because it substantiates their belief. "He smokes weed so he is cool as hell. We should listen to what he says." and of course, "He smokes weed so he is evil. We shouldn't listen to what he says."

    • @bailyemmett3970
      @bailyemmett3970 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

rockfish1000 I think that's true. Even stores use the fact he smoked for the coolness factor so they can sell more merchandise. It just says a lot about society that that is what he's remembered for.

A few friends and I were listening to Bob, way back before the word 'Reggae' was coined. We called it RASTA, ( this was the 70's, please understand). Us strange white children, were touched. God has sent a few messengers to this planet. Mr. Marley was one of them. it's now 2019.

I grew up listening to this legend's song, i was a cheery and strong kid back then.
I've spent the last few years feeling miserable from all the troubles and the rushes of life.
Now i know why i felt that way, i've been away from good musics that sings about the beauty of humanity like the ones from Bob Marley.
Funny how such 'simple' thing as music can affect a man's life, or at least his perspective on it.
Glad i came back to this great man's songs, and many others that sang songs from the same view with Bob.
    Good old reggae songs.

People say that 'no woman no cry' means Bob said to his woman "don't cry I'll be back," but I'm sure he wouldn't mind if we interpreted it as needed, because it is a healing song when you're single. He HEALS us.

    • @fukboi4034

It's all subjective. While I appreciate Bob Marley & The Wailers (and several other artists) it's Earth, Wind & Fire that does it for me....songs like Devotion, That's the Way of the World, Evil, Head To the Sky, Spirit, Reasons, Can't Hide Love, After The Love Has Gone, Loves Holiday, etc can't be touched in my opinion.

Contrary to popular belief "No Woman, No Cry" was not a song written about getting over a girl. They are the words Bob Marley sings to his woman to assure her that he will return. Basically saying, No woman, don't cry. In the song the man is a travelling minstrel telling his woman he will come back for her.
"So dry your eyes I say, and while I'm gone
everything is going to be alright
everything is going to be alright now
no woman no cry, no woman no cry"

The man had children with a dozen women, he would have been lynched by the MeToo movement if he was a modern artist.

If I may. I lost my daddy almost 2 years ago. It wasn't God. I learned that the enemy comes to steal kill and destroy, but no matter what the enemy did... No matter how he tried to destroy my family and my faith, he only made a stronger daughter to my Heavenly Father. I still cry, but I always thank God that he didn't just leave my daddy's passing right there. He comforted me and showed me that everything that I loved about my daddy was all characteristics from Him. He is a Father who was holding you the day you found out and still holding you. He never leaves nor forsakes. Isaiah 45, 48, 61and 54. Ephesians is a good book to read. Remember. No weapon formed against you shall prosper and prevail. The enemy took but our Father is still watering you daily with His spirit to grow. Victory in the end. We serve someone who brought our loved ones home so that we may see them again. The enemy never wins. The enemy took, but our Father welcomed them in. And He is constantly with you. Don't trust me, but trust someone,Him, who has never lied. Who is yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Who has taken you out of every storm. Remember... Sometimes we want the situation to change, but our Father wants us to trust him and spiritually feed our self so that our minds are renewed. So that we grow and see things the way He sees it and that we can see the situation different and react different as well. Your an Overcomer. Believe that. I love you and God bless. If you ever need ANYTHING, such as a prayer, sermon, music... Sister is here. God bless you and your journey!!!

I listened to Bob non stop when I was about 12 - 14. Life made no sense back then and Bob's music seemed so beautiful yet so simple. He projected the positivity of being alive, even through sorrow.
Nights out on the curb in the neighbourhood I'd smoke up and listen to this man I had so little in common with but I felt he understood me, a teenager from Ireland. My parents would say. "That man made his millions" "He's a business man" "Life's not all about relaxing and smoking grass". I know they meant well.
I'm 26 now and under so much pressure. Working a dead end job, wonderful girlfriend is talking about moving in, mortgage / rent. Life makes even less sense to me now. I don't know what compelled me to search and listen to this incredible song. But Bob's message just came swelling back to me & I feel free, even if it's just for a moment.

“The song tells the story of him in his early years. Trenchtown is a government housing project in Jamaica. As you may know, Bob grew up in one of these developments as a child. Firelight refers to this. At night, in the center of the development, a huge fire was lit every night for a number of reasons. One was to keep warm since the buildings had no heating and to cook the community food such as "cornmeal porridge." He is speaking to someone and telling that person, a girl, to look to the future and not to cry because of the circumstances. It is also said that Bob predicted his illness which he would get later in life when he says "My feet is my only carriage, so i'll have to push on through." Bob got cancer which started in his big right toe years later. He refuse surgery because he wasn't sure how it would effects his dancing on stage. So he would have to push on through. He is saying in his absence not to cry. It should also be mentioned that at the end of the performance, he would always cry which means the song was personal to him.”
