    I brought a secondhand imac with Logic Pro installed. I have a very basic system. I would love any of the interfaces. From doing a lot of research on TH-cam and tutorial to help me with my music production. SSL seem to be right up there when it comes to quality, so i'm going with the SSL2.

    thought the Steinberg UR22c sounded nice especially with the acoustic guitar adding some nice upper mids, just looking at different options for sound cards/audio interfaces as I haven't got one yet, some great vids reviewing different options on this channel, keep up the good work!

      Ed Thorne, I originally was thinking of getting the Apollo twin X like you as it has the bonus of coming with some great plugins like the LA-2A and others. Although with the dsp problem that you had and also with it being out of my price range when I checked, I probably won’t get it. Other than that I’ve heard some of the audient and focusrite products are good, and I’ll wait to see your verdict on the Scarlett vs Clarett. Otherwise I’m open to more suggestions and will be doing more research on entry audio interfaces

    Congratulations on 1k man. I think the ADAT compatibility on the audient gives it an edge, it can grow with your setup instead of impeding it, plus buckets of headroom and nice clean preamps are never a bad thing.

      @@EdThorne Looking forward to future videos with Behringer and MOTU interfaces to round out the relatively budget interfaces! Also, I know this information is out there, but it'd be great to have some of this consolidated on one place: deeper explanation of specs and what they mean (e.g. different types of inputs), maybe comparisons of mics and explanations of miking patterns and techniques. And, I've yet to see a great, thorough blind listening test that compares several audio interfaces - I feel like this could provide some raw, unbiased thoughts on how an audio interface performs.

Having kids who are being encouraged into music, recording, making videos and such, doing so on the iPad is so much more familiar to them than the laptop. There were indeed only slight differences between these. For me with vocals, the standouts were the Steinberg and the Audient. The Steinberg had more clarity (not just additional brightness like the Focustrite with Air) and the Audient felt like it had more headroom and slightly richer low mids. It seemed to "breathe" more. I personally didn't like the Focusrite Air mode. I had a Scarlett 2i4 2nd Gen before and since then, an Audient iD4 then more recently the iD14 MKII. To me, the Audient preamps and converters sound significantly more transparent than the Scarlett 2i4 I had (much less difference here) and the preamps are way less noisy. Also as a guitar player, I never could get a really good tone out of amp sims with the Scarlett, the high impedance instrument input of both the iD4 and iD14 MKII solved that. Noticeably wider frequency range of the direct recorded signal, better preserved highs and more natural "feel".

      My SSL 2 crapped out on me after a year of use ... it got increasingly more 'buzzy' and the second instrument channel doesn't work at all. They feel like gimmicky plastic pieces of junk to me ... but that's just been my experience. I may have gotten a lemon, but although they've been getting great reviews, beware of the SSL 2.

    • @sapv
      @sapv ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Fiveash-Art I've been hearing more and more bad stuff about the SSL interfaces... I would say, from my experience, that they feel definitively flimsy and cheap in your hands. It feels far from a premium product.
      On the other hand, Audient has been killing it. I got myself an Evo 16, and damn, that's a pretty and great piece of hardware, mind-blown.

      @@sapv I'm having some sort of grounding issue and I think it may be possible it was the M1 Mac mini not having a proper ground plug. I can't believe Apple is still making these things like this. I bought a 'ground loop isolator' by some company online. I'm going to see if that helps the issue. I may have jumped the gun blaming the SSL 2 ... it seemed great when I first started with it. ... but yeah, it does seem kind of cheaply made. If the issue continues I'm thinking of buying the focus rite Clarett ...

Planning to upgrade to some KRKs or maybe Yamahas (model to be decided) and some Beyerdynamic 770pros with their higher impedance. Would prefer an audio interface with space for two sets of monitor inputs over other inter-connectivity as my instruments are virtual and my neighbours have banned me from singing too 😂
    Good idea to let us hear the difference between them all plus show the wavetable as the aforementioned monitors make it difficult to hear the difference (hence the urgent upgrade!!) Thansk for the great reviews man

Q: at that point, our multi track mixers in the same price range for comparable low noise and clean signal? (meaning I wouldn’t consider something like a Behringer if you paid me!)

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OllieJ Games It depends on your interface. Most interfaces under $200 only have an input gain of around 55dB, which is enough if you’re a loud singer but the last 10% of the gain structure on these devices introduces noise so you can’t use all 55dB. So I’d suggest a cloud lifter then. Or, combine your interface and cloud lifter money and get an SSL/Audient/Apollo which have loads of clean gain.

    Hey Ed, what do you think of the Audient ID 22 vs the 14 here.
    I see they have similar or the same converters but I was looking into getting the SSL 2 and just getting rid of my Audient ID22 since I've had it since 2016.

      The iD22 has some great features (alt monitor outs, insert send/returns if you have outboard gear), and the assignable F buttons. It seems a more functional desktop controller than the iD14, more akin to the Apollo. Sound wise, personally, I'd stay with the Audient over the SSL. The SSL isn't fitted with the famous E-Channel strip preamps that SSL are famous for. They definitely play on the fact that people make that assumption.

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The iD software basically allows you to re-route your inputs. You can monitor through a reverb plugin on a channel strip in Logic but this will introduce latency.
      For monitor return processing, the Antelope ZenGo and UA Apollo’s are the best devices for this (also a lot more expensive due to the DSP processing required to enable effect monitoring with sub 2ms latency)

I don’t think you’d hear a difference between the 96k on the US model and this but it’s a sensible move from Tascam. In terms of direct monitoring, IMHO the Scarlett is pretty poor. The best interfaces in this video for DM are the Audient, SSL and M-Audio. It might be worth looking at the new iD14 mrkii. Regarding the software, this is where the Scarlett does well but almost all of these interfaces come with a free DAW of some kind.

    Fast forward to March 2021. Just got an AUDIENT EVO 8. The first one was defective, with no audible Mic input heard on the headphones. Got a replacement from Sweetwater here in the USA. I really like the EVO 8! The FOUR COMBO inputs are so versatile. I can even take a cell phone audio, using a 1/8 to split 1/4 cable, and get a great signal. Whereas with USB interfaces like the MOTU M4, or Scarlett 4i4, that won't work using the 1/4" jacks in the back of the units. They are LINE LEVEL inputs, can only accept signals from a Mixer line out or such, which are very different in voltages and resistance as compared to, say the 1/4" jacks of a mixer which are meant for cell phones, tablets or MP3 players. Maybe the USB power from a laptop is just not adequate for that purpose. Anyone know?

      @@TrueShayari Yes, it comes with Windows drivers. I use Mac so can’t comment about the PC software. The Tascam is great, best sounding in this bunch imo, I haven’t used the new Hd version.

    Hey bud, can u tell me which one should i buy. I want to make covers with electric guitar ,vocals and backing track but i want to do it with my phone which can record effects and multiple tracks(i have a laptop, but it will be a pain to carry it around in terrains). These are few of the choices that i have.:- audient evo 4 , roland rubix 22 , Steinberg ur22c , behringer 204 or 202 , motu m2, scarlett 2i2 3rd gen, presonus 24 or 26 c. Ssl2 is quite on expensive side so cant afford that..

      Hi there Ashish, I'm not sure which of these enable recording onto your mobile. I know the Steinberg has iPad recording functionality. Sorry I can't be more specific.

      I just want to know if there are any other audio interfaces like Steinberg ur22c which has inbuilt dsp and can be used for live streaming on TH-cam or direct video recording with phone.
      For eg .. this video th-cam.com/video/zhGZEMCwuuQ/w-d-xo.html

    Hi! I have a question. Between the M-audio and the scarlett, which one is better for recording electric guitar and nylon string guitar?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're both very similar. The direct monitoring is much better on the M-Audio though. You can hear the Focusrite and Soft Tube plugins that come free with the Scarlett in this video. We DI'd the electric and mic's the acoustic: th-cam.com/video/ZcXOoXdQ9Z8/w-d-xo.html

    I'm super interested in the SSL+, but I'm forced to bus power the unit. Is there anything to be worried about with bus powered? Also considering i'm upgrading from a scarlett 6i6 I realize all these units are USB 2.0. Am i to understand that there isn't much need even for modern interfaces to use usb 3.0?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't have any trouble with the unit being bus powered. The difference between USB numbers is the speed of data transfer and the amount of power they can transfer, the larger the number the significantly better. The faster the data transfer, the lower the latency. The direct monitoring on the SSL2 is very good so you wouldn't need to run through your DAW for input monitoring if you can handle recording with dry monitoring.

    For me the NI Komplete , Steinberg UR22 and SSl 2..They all seem to have a more open and natural sound and I could hear more nuances in the performance.

    SSL 2 is better then Steinberg or Focusrite for Shure SM7B ?

    • @EdThorne
      @EdThorne  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Gen 4 Scarlett has 68dB of gain - plenty for an SM7b before preamp noise. The SSL is good too.
