Joni Mitchel is my all time top musician & her album "Blue" at the same slot. Her flowing beautiful lyrics & voice along side her gentle handling of dulcimer, guitar or piano made me fall in love with this gifted poet, troubadour & artist. Joni's music is with me forever. Please react to "A Case of you" you will not be disappointed. Thank you.

This is probably Joni's best known song. It's a good one, but I think almost every song from her first two albums are her best stuff. Mostly just her voice and her guitar, no studio engineering/mixing with a lot of background instruments. It's well known that David Crosby produced her first album, and he made sure that studio engineering did not spoil the simple perfection of her singing and guitar playing.

Hello there, Sarah. I managed to land here again because it came across my feed & it's Joni Mitchell, right? So I dropped in & listened to it again, only to find, after deciding to leave a comment, that the most recent comment already here was also from me, a month ago. I've commented on a lot of YT videos before, but that's never happened before! Just so you know up front, I'm not some kind of weird stalker. It just happened this way by chance.
So, on to the comment I decided to leave -- There's an element of this wonderful song that is decidedly tricky, because the manner in which a specific part of the lyrics are sung makes it exceptionally easy for them to be misinterpreted into something else. I'm talking about the several times in the song where the lyrics refer to liking one's own freedom. It's "like you love your freedom" in one verse, "like we love our freedom" in another, and there may be a third pronoun in play in a different verse, but regardless of which verse and which pronoun you examine, they all have something in common : the words "but not", sung very quickly and without emphasis, to the extent that a LOT of people don't even realize they're there, and thus get the meaning of the lyric entirely wrong.
It's not "you love your loving like you love your freedom," which says the two loves are equal, but rather "you love your loving, but not like you love your freedom," which says the love of freedom is the stronger of the two loves. It's the same in every case of this lyrical formulation in this song. Joni sings repeatedly that her and her fellow's love of freedom is greater than their love of loving (i.e. love-making). This makes complete sense (whereas the equal-loves idea doesn't) if you understand the culture of the time. I know, because I was there. Sex was great, but freedom was THE thing. For sure.
If you doubt this, you can look up the lyrics, but be warned : there are a LOT of faulty lyrics out there, and in this particular case, I wouldn't doubt at all that you can find versions that leave "but not" out. I just now googled "lyrics help me joni mitchell" and got correct lyrics, but do be careful where you look. If you want to remove all doubt, you might find the lyrics printed on the original album cover or record sleeve. A close listen, though, should be enough. (In the first instance in this recording, the "but" appears to be left out, but I believe that's because it's sung so rapidly that it gets "swallowed", i.e. elided, left out.)
Anyway, thanks for the reaction. Joni is one of the all-time goddesses of song. Glad you found her. Cheers.

She performed at the Grammys last week, at the age of 80 performing her brilliant composition "Clouds."
Joni is one of the greatest talents to emerge from the music scene in the late 60s-70s. Brilliant writer and singer who can almost reach notes only dogs can hear, she is also a brilliant painter. Her writing style and her singing style is very painterly as well. She can touch you deep in your soul, she can sing deep truths, and she can make you laugh and think at the same time.

Joni Mitchell is special, and your reaction lovely. Looking out for more of you reactions to Joni Mitchell.
There is one more singer who has such an surprising range in her voice; Judee Sill. Her music has another atmosphere, and her live story was different from Joni's as well, and unfortunately she seems to fade in obscurity. In the early 70s she had a hit with "Jesus Was A Cross Maker", that appealed to all (no religious affiliation needed). She made only two albums :Judee Sill" and "Heart Food". Some of her songs can be found here on TH-cam. I suggest "The Kiss" and take it from there (to The Donor, Blackbird, Crayon Angels, etc.).

She is an album artist. She creates 1-2-3 albums for one generation of her music, then another generation of albums, and another. Listening to a handful of picked-over bones does NOT benefit the listener ALL ALL. Consume hers, whole albums at a time.
Also notice that she was doing All Vocals or 10-12 albums. You will NOT get a sense of Joni's music by only hearing 2 or 8 songs.
Start with Album #3 (LADIES OF THE CANYON) and listen the rest for a week at a time. Her first two albums (SONGS FOR A SEAGULL and CLOUDS are from her folk-club days primarily and can be a tad 'basic', but even on those two, there are gems.
