Trying to slowly build and grow my coral army while I put together all the pieces for my main display. Thought getting good zoa's would help me fuel the hobby, because they seem easy to frag and can grow afew heads as time goes on. Noticed in the last 2 weeks most zoas in the 2 tanks that have alot have been closed alot more then open. Good about doing small water changes often to export nutrients, but kinda stumped on why they were doing great for afew months and now aren't. Gonna take this time at home to practice testing, try and crack this before not acting results in them melting. Binged afew of your videos(as you'll notice from your comment sections), subscribed and looking forward to checking out some of your other stuff when I can
I've found most zoas are sensitive to phosphates. I'd check those. My biggest battle lately has been keeping nitrates around 5ppm and phosphates below .05. That's when my tanks seem most happy.

Well we do have to name corals for the hobby to distinctly seperate unamed species. If its popular just wait ten years or try to search for similar species.
I am investing in high end zoas now to make some cash to support this crazy hobby and its carry to know that in a few years the thousands of dollars I have spent could be worth a few hundred! I started in dec 2019 and utter chaos was already cheap! I heard sunny d's and nirvanas were crazy expensive. Nirvanas are the cheapest zoa there is right now! I bought about 12 from my tlfs for 9.99!
Oh yes! The best way...if you're "investing" is to find good deals on the slow growers. GMK's, Speckled Kraks, Flaming Mohicans, Little Shop of Horrors....Nirvanas grow TOO FAST.
OSA, does not have coral on their website. Maybe they stopped selling them on the website, but now it's just tanks. And yes, I know this is an old video. I am just starting out my coral journey.

I just got a single polyp of stratosphere they sell for 250$ CDN each normally but I hit an unadvertised flash sale from my favourite online store they were 100$ PP having had very limited experience with zoas and not knowing what I was getting myself into until hit “add to cart” I ordered it along with a couple other verities as 2 years ago my tank burst and since then it’s been a struggle ow that the replacement tank is a year old and the freebies of montipora they sent me in the past wasn’t just alive but growing as fast as they warn you about I jumped on it not gonna lie a week ago it shrivelled up after my last order came in and I had to move stuff around leading to an unfortunate incident where the stratosphere plug popped out of its place amd flew threw the water hit the front glass landing face down in my sand bed, the next day fully opened a hermit crab looking for scraps started bumping into it leading to it getting the “zoa umbrella syndrome” look however I I had no choice but to move it being a single polyp on the plug that I had mounted sideways it was starting to detach long story short it was really pissed off but I left it alone did a 35% water change & had iodine + other things on hand to use to dip if needed were Saturday night I went to bed it was starting to look like it might be doing better I got up Sunday morning and it was 85% open by noon it was fully open as if nothing ever happened were mid afternoon Tuesday and it’s actually showing obvious growth….. I hear you about the whole nail biting “it’s gonna melt” experience and 100$ is the most I’ve ever spent on a single coral with the exception of my rainbow “open brain” tracheaphillia having cost me double that however when you actually think about size vs. Cost I paid Pennie’s to the dollar per gram for most things $ although I have many high end Montipora, Favia, & Chalice frags + my lobo & trachea they have all been bought for 1/2 or less on flash sales or were absolutely huge this was the most expensive coral size / dollar I’ve ever bought and the most valuable coral when you consider the regular price that aside I will say that it appears to be much more resistant than expected I got it after cooing over the stock pix online having fallen in love with its look deciding that if it ever came on sale for a good price I’d jump on it not knowing what I was getting being an “LPS guy” who was looking at zoas my only regret is not having gotten a “2 polyp” example as they sell 250$ for one 500$ for 2 & the sale price was the same 100$ for one 200$ for two I shoulda went for it but live and learn it was 1/3rd grown about the same size as a full grown pinwheel Zoa it’s substantially larger than what it was and seems like it’s gonna sprout out a baby soon ….. that’s my experience/story thus far with some luck and prayers this experiment with Zoa keeping will work out for me any suggestions for keeping it outside of just letting nature take care of it would be great
@@BahamaLlamaCoral POTO (Pieces of the Ocean), they got their frag from Cornbred Corals. I had a pretty big colony of them until I moved. Put them in the tub with my anemones, and the anemones decided it was their time to punch out and nuked everything I had in that tub with them.
so. i had an entire colony of emerald on fire melt to completely flat on the plug. they were literally just stains on the plug. i left the plug in my system. 2 months later they all grew back and have spread everywhere. so dont count zoas out,. i was shocked when they started to re grow.

I broke my arm and had to sell my tank to gateway aquatics. I had a lot of stuff from WWC. If you get time to stop by there and maybe get some of my old corals.

I decided to sell my tank while it was still thriving instead of waiting until everything wasn’t doing good , due to not being able to take care of it plus having new medical bills. I sold it to Gateway on the 27th of Dec, but surely he still has a lot of it. I’m hoping to get a new tank going December 2020
The WORST part of these higher end zoas...is watching them and ONLY them melt away to nothingness. OR have a "trusted" pygmy angelfish develop a taste for the most expensive zoa you just brought home from a swap. Thats life right?

Fruit loops, pink zippers, mind blowers, passion palys, orange sherbet, nuclear green dragon eyes, Arctic palys, armor of god, blue hornets, candy apples, nuclear green paly, amongst others. Have many, the names just help you identify and compare. All thriving, growing out many on frag plugs and rocks in groups. Selling one or two polyps for anything more than $5/polyp seems somewhat unethical.
I totally get that. That's exactly why I like the names too. There's been a lot of "new releases" (which I don't really know how you get to "release" a wild animal into the hobby but whatever...lol) that muddy the name game. I do like knowing that when someone says Fruit Loops I know exactly what they're talking about.
They've come down quite a bit since this video was made. You can get them even cheaper at swaps. I'd say they are about $100-120pp - WWC is always gonna be more expensive.

The prices for a zoanthids or palythoas polyp or small colony are absurd. Just think of the size. If you got enough of these animals together to the size and weight of a purebred miniature chihuahua you’d be a multimillionaire. Coral prices are kind of absurd, especially when talking about frags.
I can only speak for the last 5 years or so maybe I'm just used to the outrageous pricing on some of this stuff. Although I have several friends who remember going to frag swaps because it a way to get good deals. Now it's just retail pricing (for the most part) at the larger swaps.
I love and hate this hobby so much. People buy a frag for 500 and expect to sell each frag for the same price. Say a company buys a machine that names stickers for 10k..monthly sell each sticker for 10k? No they sell it for less. Much less until they hit even and then start flipping profit -_-. I know growth counts but come on!
Learned long ago high end zoas are a waste of time and money. The name game is cringe AF...Money much better spend on high end LPS. Today, the only zoas I mess with are basic bam bams and rastas

Fruit loop zoas were my most expensive. About 10 years ago they went for $75 for three polyps.

Personally I like low to medium depth and medium flow. Some can handle higher light better and actually respond really well color-wise.

Sounds like a Grand Master Krak or Stratosphere. GMK's have come down in price a ton at this point. Strats have always been pretty expensive.

The prices for a zoanthids or palythoas polyp or small colony are absurd. Just think of the size. If you got enough of these animals together to the size and weight of a purebred miniature chihuahua you’d be a multimillionaire.
Coral prices are kind of absurd, especially when talking about frags.
I can only speak for the last 5 years or so maybe I'm just used to the outrageous pricing on some of this stuff. Although I have several friends who remember going to frag swaps because it a way to get good deals. Now it's just retail pricing (for the most part) at the larger swaps.

I love and hate this hobby so much. People buy a frag for 500 and expect to sell each frag for the same price. Say a company buys a machine that names stickers for 10k..monthly sell each sticker for 10k? No they sell it for less. Much less until they hit even and then start flipping profit -_-. I know growth counts but come on!
I agree. I always like to sell any high end stuff to local reefers for a lot cheaper! Heck, most of the time I'll just trade out stuff instead.

Learned long ago high end zoas are a waste of time and money. The name game is cringe AF...Money much better spend on high end LPS. Today, the only zoas I mess with are basic bam bams and rastas
