Such a pleasure to be of a generation that was exposed to this great work in grade school. Perhaps one of the last generations to be.

I teach 9th grade English and my students just started it. One student sought out the movie and liked it so much that she watched the whole thing! She told me she spoiled it for herself but she wanted to know how it ends.

I saw the movie in the early 2000s. To me, the power of the movie was that it depicted a family struggling with an important decision. It was about generational differences, caution vs. dreams, the desire for the next generation to have a better life. After the first 10 minutes, until the last 10 minutes, I didn't see a black family. I just saw a family.
Mom and Dad could have been immigrants. They could have been a white couple that lost the family farm in the Great Depression or Dust Bowl and moved to the city to survive. The story could have been very similar.
And there is where you get the broad and lasting appeal.

It should have been very easy for the Youngers to figure out what to do with at least some of the insurance money. These were five people living in a cramped apartment with no private bathroom and Travis sleeping on the living room couch. Thus, a larger living space with at least another bedroom and a private bathroom or two should have been the first thing on their minds. However, for some inexplicable reason they never even talked about getting a larger living space during the 6 months before the money came. The truth is, as a family they had not been trying to figure out what to do with the money. There were no family meetings. Ruth frivolously suggested to Mama that she spend the money on a European junket and mama made an idle reference about giving it all to the church. Walter and Beneatha argued about whether mama should use the money entirely for herself. When Travis asked about it, he was told by his mother not talk about money so early in the morning. As a family they seemed afraid to even talk as if mere discussion about money was sinful. So, what was Lorraine Hansberry conveying to us by showing so much family confusion?
