The warmest place to be is out of the wind, and when you live above the treeline, sometimes the only place out of the wind is under the snow. Obviously if the dogs are working during the day then their activity level keeps them warm, but if they're not keeping busy then snuggling up in a ball in the snow is the coziest place to be. I know it sounds counter-intuitive, but snow is a good insulator. Just ask the Inuit, who used to keep warm in igloos..... basically snow caves.
Akitas in the House I second what you’ve posted. Spent my younger years living in northern Canada hunting and trapping. We’d snow shelters by piling up packed snow then tunneling in. Once complete a small heater would keep you warm enough to remove your outer wear even if it was -40 out

The dog's fur prevents the cold snow from touching his skin, I'm sure he's prety warm in there. Plus he could clearly get out whenever he wanted, so don't worry for him. If this was uncomfortable in any way, the dog would not have stayed there. This is a Malamute... They LOVE snow. they were bred for that.

They're kept in wrong climates, not exercised enough, some breeds are so twisted the poor dogs can't properly run or breathe.

That doesn't make sense. Maybe in a storm or at night but on a clear bright day it would be colder under the snow not warmer.
