I've learned about the Todoroki Gorge from the old Japan Video topics. I grew up watching those episodes of JVT and it introduced me to the real culture of Japan. It made me want to visit Japan, all those Nature trip videos, cultural videos, from snowman village to wrapping things using cloths (like you see in animes). That's the Japan that I wanted to explore. The Japan I wanted to learn.
It makes my heart feel warm and excited everytime I would visualize watching those Japan Video Topics. Everytime I would imagine that I would get to experience all those that they've shown. The warm people, very nice culture, very beautiful sceneries. Oh my goodness. I can't put my thoughts into words.
Now, as a grown man, I was able to travel 7-8 Asian countries, but not Japan, yet. The reason is, nowadays, travelling countries is usually city tours. In Korea, in Taiwan, Thailand, Hong Kong. They're all the same. And also of course Japan as well, that's the common tourist itinerary.
But that's not the Japan I want to experience. I want to experience the real Japan I learned through Japan video topics. From northern places down to Southern places. From forests, to beaches, to visiting cultural shows, cultural villages. And that is almost impossible for a tourist with a limited budget and time to stay in Japan.
As a tourist, it's almost automatically you'd be bound to city travels like Tokyo and Kyoto tours. Mostly like that. I wouldnt get the chance to experience fully those that I watched in the videos. And that's why I don't want to visit Japan now. I don't want to experience it as a tourist. I want to experience it as a local who gets to experience everything in those videos a little each day. Living life to the fullest.

I always prefer to travel independently rather than tours, so you can see what you want to, and spend as long as you like in each place. But yes, as a visitor we'll never experience Japan in the same way as if you live there and really get to know the culture.

Looks indeed like a good way to escape the crowds for a bit if one is not too far from the location itself :)

This is another spot that has been on my list for awhile. It's interesting to see it at another time of year! Most people show it at the height of summer so it's very green.
We'll be there in this fall and I'm excited to see what it looks like with autumn colours.

I'm sure it'll be beautiful in autumn! Another place that's great for the fall colours is Mount Takao: th-cam.com/video/06yoHNi7ZG4/w-d-xo.html I was there in June but people have told me it's great when the leaves change colour.

Actually, that is not what Todoroki means. Seems you looked up 轟, but this one is 等々力 as the sign says at 0:57. Both happen to be pronounced the same. 等々力 is just a place name with practically no important meaning.
