10x20 tarp. Fold in half, stuff with dry debris, fold in half agaain, secure the edges of the tarp, so that the debris cant fall out. Pile up some debris and use loggs to keep the debris from spreading outl Get into your debris/tarp bag and you'll be ok to temps below freezing. Put hot rocks in their with you, wrapped in moss and you can get down to temps near 0F. One end/side of the tarp, you can notch with a shorp stone and tear off a 1/4" wide strip, Tear off several of these strips and twist them into cordage. Braid several of the cords into rope. When you've got good cordage, it's not that hard to make a pump drill and with it, you;'ll have fire. A chunk of the tarp can be made into a pack, another chunk into a liner for a stone-boiling pit, another chunk can become a canteen.

for survival anywhere in the world and I had to choose just one item, I'd pick a tarp over a mahete, axe, saw, kukri, or hatchete, any day.

I can make a stone adze a lot more quikly than I can make a portable, windproof, waterproof membrane and it's very easy to die from the lack of that membrane.
