When I worked as a mechanic I would use a length of fuel line squeezed over a spark plug to install them in tight places. Then I discovered that Champion spark plugs made one just for this purpose! I also cut up some different sizes of fuel line to install small bolts and screws that even my flex driver extensions couldn't reach. I was watching you and thought you could use some of that silicone rubber line for the same purpose!

Hi Keith, the old oil in your Rocket Loco is caster oil, it goes solid with age as it is a vegetable based oil used a lot in Speedway bikes back in the day as it works well with methanol fuel. it goes green due to the contact with the brass parts of the engine. the smell is very evocative of racing machines of yesteryear when burnt. the two most common grades are R30 light or R40 heavy. Hope this is of interest. Stay safe and keep the videos coming great stuff.

Thanks for the info, I think you are right. When I was working on the engine it smelt quite like my old glow plug engines back in the day of Methanol & Castor oil . . . Happy Days {:-)))

I wonder if they used two stroke oil. It's green like that and gets super gummy over time.

That oil residue looks very like the sort of thing you got when you mixed synthetic motor oils with mineral oils

I wonder if the oil residue is the remnants of the original factory run in oil... it doesnt look like it was played with enough by randoms to get too much stuff in it. I wonder if they weren't using hydraulic fluid (which is also dyed)... or some other not great oil for run-in purpose expecting it to be flushed out by the user.

That looks very much like Duckhams motor oil, it's a vegetable based lubricant which will dry out if left for long periods and also is incompatible with mineral oils so does not mix or dissolve into them. Steam oil or a 'high grade' lubricating oil will not be able to break it up or flush it out but Rapeseed oil might, high temperature steam would definitely get it moving though.

It could be motor oil has been used in the past.

Your mystery oil may be 2 cycle engine oil. I used it at one point on some of my steam engines, and it is quite green if you have the right stuff. I’m not an oil expert, just speaking from experience.

I would guess the residue is vegetable oil. Cooking oil dries up with age.

give it a year or two in the new shop and you will look down at the floor and won't be able to see floor . . . then it will be time for a major cleanup . . . leaving just enough debris to give it that lived-in look.

Back in the 30s, dad had a auto garage. And the lacquer that was left in the engines, put him off Standard Oil.
Atleast that is what he said it was from.
