  • Work continues at pace on the new garden that we started last year. We look back on what it was like before and what we’ve done so far and discuss ongoing plans.

    Morning
We did the metal edging years ago on our rear cottage garden for the little lawns. In effect metal rings backfilled with compost and turf. Out side the rings gravel as pathways.
What I found was going to a local metal stock yard and getting them to cut down metal plate with their laser cutter. Cutting off-site was much cheaper as you weren't paying on-site labour..... If I remember we used 10cm high 2mm thick and 4 mtr lengths. Using thin sheet meant we could really form the edge as wanted. We didn't use box section to secure the edge in place but used flat galved steel "tent pegs" the ends I tacked with a welder (very inexpensive & 18 yrs later still strong).
What I do notice is the whole plot seems to be very flat. We were faced with the same dilemma.
To give the garden a little "interest" we put in a raised section the entire length of the garden approx 100mtrs 3mtrs deep and 40cm high. Concrete faced and where needed stone faced.
The advantage is you can put Raised features in eg ponds, raised flower beds, grill / seating area etc. we sectioned it off into combination of growing or gravel areas.
The effect was that you have nice promentary areas for sitting / entertaining etc. on one section we put a open pavillion & garden kitchen in and you can sit out there and enjoy the garden.
    One last tip....
    Wire and plumbing the garden.
It's much much Easter to install a few electrical rings (one for plugs one for lights) when laying out the garden. Put them in at at least 18 inches down and map out where you'd like sockets.
Likewise lay yourself a 1 inch water feed again at least 18 inches down to avoid a any frost threat ideally the length of the property initially from the house/ yard. - in the future you can use it to feed "sweet" should you need it if more as likely to take groundwater via a pump to irrigate the garden. The feed I put in I put take offs to use a 5mtr hose to water problem areas. The main bulk of our groundwater system goes to run the garden sprinklers.
The electric and water we did at "ground zero on day one" when we first laid the garden out and doing it then reaped it's benefits later on....

It's just lovely. The turf was a good choice--it adds a softness to the area and contributes to the woodland feel.

The new garden looks wonderful. I like the steel edging and the circle in the center. A mini wildflower meadow in the circle will look lovely.

Boy do you know your unusual rare trees....great selection, well done.....I actually know all of these trees though do not own them all due to a restricted city lot in Spokane Wa. Love your channel and your sweet little cocker spaniel.

Thank you, I’m so pleased with them all and they are doing very well. I spent about two hours today watering them all, I’m quite happy if we have a wet summer!!

The gardens looking great guys and looks like all the work will really pay off. The look no mai I was told can be short lived and do suffer from wind chill so that may well have happened. You might like calycanthus Hartlage wine it’s fragrant and lovely shaped flowers. Burncoose nurseries are good for shrubs online the standard of plant has always been exceptional when I’ve recieved my orders from them. Enjoy Chelsea flower show 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 p.s Adam frost likes seven sons trees 😊

Might be the wind that has caused the demise of Ko Jo no mai, it’s been in a pot for a few years prior to planting and was in a more sheltered spot so this move may have been too much for it! Thanks for watching

Have you thought of a water feature/fountain inside the middle ? Or even the picture of the wildflowers with the water feature looked good too

We have considered that but we intend to have a roll of water in the garden adjacent and so we are thinking a beautiful multi stemmed tree with wild flowers beneath may work well. Thank you for watching and I love hearing everyone’s ideas

What if you do a mini meadow in most of the circle, but in the very centre of it, place a large sundial or a small reflective circle of water with stones and a Buddha statue. The large circle reminds me of a wheel and the paths leading to it are like spokes. Or instead of a Buddha, an interesting tall windmill type thing that spins.

When they leave and go out it’s like heaven in our garden and our heart sinks when we hear their car charge up the drive and the shouting begins! Perhaps we need to install a sound barrier next, any ideas?🤣
