    Probably one of the most thorough tests you guys have done. Well done.
    One thing I would like to see how applying this in-depth testing method applies to other lights, perhaps fixtures you have already done in the past. I only say that because I know I'm not the only one out there who have not upgraded or have plans to upgrade to these lights for the foreseeable future.

    This is awesome thank you for putting this together. I bought this light back in November and haven't gotten it configured to my satisfaction yet. I had some ideas of what to do based on some anecdotal evidence, but without the empirical data provided here I'd just be taking stabs in the dark. This is great. I'm making some adjustments today and will see how it pans out on my SPS dominant tank over the next few months.

    Do really would need 2 of these over a 48” long 33 gallon long tank.
    Will the brackets fit that? Need a bracket than not only go up and down but should be able to mount side to side. Space along the back of tank can affect where lights get mounted.

    I am currently running two units on my 48x24x24 120g. The tank is LPS dominated with the exception of my monti cap& a maxima clam. I wanted to know if I would be ok to run the recommended LPS settings from the video.or should I go with something in between the recommended LPS & SPS settings.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Monti caps do pretty well in LPS level light intensities. You may want a little more light on the clam. I typically shoot for about 200-250 par for clams. If the clam is on your sand bed, you may have to play around with the settings a little to achieve the intensity at the sand bed that you're looking for.

    hello, great video congratulations. a question, if i had a 4ft (120cm) aquarium and two horizontal hydra 64 at 14 inches left and right and 12 inches in height, what power spectrum should i use for sps? unfortunately for the powers of the channels for sps in the video there is only on the 60 gallon cube and for the 4 feet you have given the powers for 3 perpendicular hydras. thank you

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 60 cube is 2 feet long, so if you have two fixtures over a 4 foot long tank, the settings should be very similar.

    • @alessandromengato6976
      @alessandromengato6976 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      in the central part where the two light beams of the two hydra meet, don't I risk having too many par with the settings as high as the cube?

    @jakedunne4606 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    @BRSTV What happens if you have glass lids? Does the spectrum need to be adjusted? I've heard the iron in the glass may reduce UV light from getting through easily

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've not done any tests on this as glass lids aren't very popular in the hobby these days. I wouldn't expect to have to adjust the spectrum much, if at all. You'll likely want to up the intensity a little bit, however.

    Q:You've shown how to get more even and effective PAR levels..What are the lighting failures we need to be more aware of?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I'd say that the most universal "fail" amongst all LED lighting is not testing the PAR output and making adjustments based on PAR data. Personally I can't think of one reef tank light in particular that was completely detrimental/ useless to corals and coral growth (obviously some are better than others), however having them tuned improperly would likely be my best guess as to why a light would have been the lead issue. This not only applies to having too much light, but also not having enough...although the latter would likely have more of an impact to coral health/survival over a longer period of time versus too much light. Long story short, PAR meter for the win! -Randy

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These lights do best over a footprint of 24" x 24", so three would be best for the sake of coverage. If you have an SPS dominant system, this is a great option. If you're an LPS reef keeper, then consider three of the smaller Hydra 32's instead.

    Why do you test all the way to the edge of the 24 or 48 inch space? No one is putting coral out that close to the glass. If you dropped the outer ring it might shift your recommendations for spacing and thus settings to hit various par values.

      Unfortunately, we didn't test this light out on a 3 foot tank. If you haven't already purchased the Hydra 64, consider using two smaller Hydra 32's instead. I think you may be disappointed in the coverage with a 64 over a 3 foot long tank and using the two smaller lights instead would let you space them out more evenly over the tank's length.

      I see. Ok Thanks. I’m still using Vegas and use ‘coral acclimation’ mode to tune overall intensity
      It’s a bit confusing seeing values over 100% for colors. But I think I’ve managed to get as close to AB+ as possible. It’s the overall intensity that I’m looking to dial-in for my setup.
      Maybe Santa will help with upgrades soon;)
      Thanks for all and Happy Holidays!

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mixed reef means areas of lower PAR for LPS and areas of high PAR for SPS. This is more about a specific aquascape than taking a grid of readings like this. The answer is rent a par meter and get it right the first time :)

    I understand too much light can strip coral color. However, is there a point too much light can stunt their growth before bleaching?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, bleaching means lethal PAR there is a big gap between ideal and lethal. Dana R's research suggests in the ocean most of the active photosynthesis is in the morning and afternoon. Much the the day the coral is just protecting itself from the peak PAR.

  • @factsmatter5642

    I have Orbit model 5103 and can't afford this kind of lighting. Am I wasting my time trying to create a reef?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's like anything. A Toyota gets you to work and home. A Lexus does it more comfortably :) There are a ton of lighting options that work for LPS and mixed tanks which is akin to the task of driving to work and back. The more challenging species like SPS can benefit from more advanced approaches. Particularly when they get large and densely packed together. Some are also easier to use or look better in the tank.

    Hi can i use one AI Hydra 64 on redsea 250 ?

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, but it's not the best choice for that particular tank. Since the Reefer 250 is about 3 feet long, you'll be much better off using two smaller fixtures instead of one larger one. AI also makes a Hydra 32, so if you like the Hydra 64, you might consider using two of the 32s on the Reefer 250 instead.

    I find one major flaw to all you light and par meter measurements. You never state the height of the frag tray plus the height of the actual sensor which probably sits on average 1 to 2 inches higher than the frag tray you are using. I think your videos should state this information and even include several different test for different average heights of frag trays. For example averages of 4", 6", 8" plus or minus the sensor height.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We absolutely could be more clear on how our light testing rig is setup, but basically when we say that we are taking measurements at 6", 12" and 18" inches underwater, those are the depths at which the top of our three LiCor sensors are placed across the grid testing area. :)

  • @tilexcan
    @tilexcan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why not test to deeper tank depth. My tank is 28 inches deep so your data means little to me. I would think most have tanks deeper than 18 inches.

    • @BRStv
      @BRStv  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sensors are 18" deep in a 24" inch deep tank. We don't go all the way to the bottom because the tops of most corals are a few inches off the bottom but also because the sensors have cords that prevent going deeper.

    • @lonestarpatriot876
      @lonestarpatriot876 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably because if they had to do a test for every tank size it would take them months to please everyone. And I am not so sure about whether or not most have tank sizes above 18 inches. I personally have two tanks in my house that are under that number and 1 that is over. That 1 that is over is still not 28 inches. Ofcourse, that is just in my house.
