Hi Emily! I’m in the middle of watching your vid but wanted to jump on before the end to ask if you’ve considered the idea of Quarterly Patreon boxes? People would still pay the usual month to month, but if you did quarterly boxes, you could potentially do some of the things you want to do more easily (add more, have more time to do them) etc. Another idea with quarterlies is you could incorporate seasonal themes in with the quarter theme - so essentially offering even more perceived value to the patrons. If you’re ever able to work ahead by one quarter, then you are working ahead of the game kind of thing. One of the issues I see as a fellow designer is the “reward poor’ scenario - creators who work really hard and put so much time and money towards their reward offerings only to have patrons leave after they get one … and also that the offerings cost more in time and money to produce than what they’re bringing in :/ So to create a more sustainable path, I’ve seen creators provide a caveat on their rewards tiers that say “require 3 months of continuous subscription to receive this reward” with an explanation as to why. Yes, it depends on the kinds of rewards, but for quarterly releases, it seems to work well. You are very nice and generous. Of course you want to offer what you want to your supporters! You like doing them and they give you a creative outlet but the balance isn’t quite there yet… You deserve to have a sustainable creative platform. You work very hard all the time and Patrons who get it, who love you and what you offer, will support you no matter what. Times are tricky for sure right now. Even though I’m a full time designer with a job, I’ve had to cut back on all my outgoings including supporting other creators. Cost of living where I am is the highest it’s ever been in 10 years :/ But we’re not making more, lol!! It sucks but things will change. Everything is a cycle. And creating businesses that are online and flexible are def a part of a lot of creators futures. I wouldn’t have an issue paying a bit more to any creator for shipping. Living overseas, I expect it! Shipping is shipping!! We all have to deal with it and I don’t think we should expect small businesses to foot that bill. I love your vids - you are inspiring and fun to watch. Don’t give up and don’t let the YT algorithm get you down. We’re here cheering you on 😊

Dirty dancing was one of my dads favorite movies. Perhaps you could make the boxes more sustainable by always offering a mini box option at a lower price and send only a sticker sheet or mini print that way the mini boxes are helping pay for the larger boxes and they can be sent in an envelope.

Favorite Quote "Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner" I had looked at doing a subscription box last year and I crunched the numbers so much that I never did it because there was a lot of cost that was involved. I worked out that postage was going to cost me so much that I would either have to charge way more and not sell many or lose money. So I didn't do them. I really enjoyed watching this vlog. Thanks for the honest vlog, I do follow you for insight about being a shop owner, and i'm glad you keep it real! As for the extra items, as a non-top tier subscriber, I would love to get the extras but I'm not locked to getting a mystery box, i will be able to pick and choose, and i think that's great idea. So many patreons do monthly prints and sticker and I think that's great too. Patreon isn't supposed to be hard for the creators, we as patrons just want to support our fav creator, as a patron I support multiple creators at the lower tiers and i don't really check the content, I'm just happy to support :) As for feeling "stuck", perhaps you could join more events like planner con in the UK, or join more pop ups shops or finding a retailer/gift shop to carry your items! Don't worry about how your channel is because I think we all love it and for me it's always really entertaining, interesting, motivating and makes me feel good 😍 And about the Patreon boxes expenses the only thing that comes to my mind is "wooow", people don't give it value that it deserves... I have seen people that has higher prices and that has a different different levels on Patreon depending if it is international shiping or not. Just a thought - I follow quite a few vlogs - I sew makes and like the company - and I’ve noticed people are doing a lot more shorts and they put out their patreons designs a month ahead to get people to sign up - I’ve gotten interested that way.
I have no intention of ever doing what you do (I prefer the tutorial route), but I LOVE watching your videos, and I DO get excited to click on your videos when they pop up. You have such a calming demeanour, and it is so relaxing to watch you work in your gorgeous space on the most amazing art pieces and leveling up your business. Im glad you are ignoring the pressure, I have a separate vlog channel (which honestly i have been really bad at uploading onto this year), but I feel its just a way for me to connect with my audience, so I relate to the idea of "its not doing as well" but THATS OK! You are doing amazingly and consistent growth is more important than going viral!

My memberships are growing and I was considering outsourcing, I'll have to check but thanks to you, I think it's a little to soon. Don't you have to take into account how many of what you are earning is going into taxes ? In france with the entrepreneur status, we have to give away 22% of what people are paying when it's from a subscription or when we sell digital product but it's "only" 11% when it's a physical product from the online shop. Do you also have this much taxes on your turnover ?
Breaking down costs is super interesting! I'm wondering if you wanted to up the costs even to $18 for the physical boxes or of you think people would drop out. Costs have gone up and you shouldn't have to just absorb all of the costs.

@Emily Harvey Art Correct. You can't change a tier, but you can add a separate tier at a higher price point and close/hide the previous tier that you are replacing. Treat both tiers the same in Patreon, but all new paying patrons will have to pay the new price point. All current patrons will be grandfathered in to the lower price point, which may also encourage your patrons to not "tier hop" on your "off" months (and theoretically you can do it every month if you wanted, if the pricing is actually profitable and what it should be! I did this with my $7 tier and "changed" it to $10. Not only did I price it higher but I am also working less (am I only producing one new exclusive painting tutorial a month rather than two) and would you guess, I have just as many new patrons in that tier as I do the old tier (and some have even upgraded to the new price to support me more)! If people want what you have, they will pay for it. Don't be afraid to charge what you should be charging (and frankly deserve!). Don't sell yourself short. As an artist, it's really easy to do that (ask me how I know 🤣), but just because you love what you do doesn't mean you should do it for free! Bare in mind, though, adding a tier (at least in my own experience) can be a bit of work (but soooo worth it)! Patreon didn't automatically give access to all the content below that tier when I created it. I had to go in individually to every single post and grant access to the new tier I created. Because of this, I ended up creating 3 or 4 new tiers at different pricing points (and simply hid them) so that if I wanted to use them in the future, they would already have access to all of the content. It's much easier to do it all at once than to have to do it twice or 3 times down the road (with even more content to have to give access to). Feel free to message me on Instagram if you want to talk more about it! Charge what you need to in order to make a profit! It makes me sad when you are working so hard only to lose money/time you could be spending on products to sell! #youareworthit

Just a thought - I follow quite a few vlogs - I sew makes and like the company - and I’ve noticed people are doing a lot more shorts and they put out their patreons designs a month ahead to get people to sign up - I’ve gotten interested that way.

Im glad you are ignoring the pressure, I have a separate vlog channel (which honestly i have been really bad at uploading onto this year), but I feel its just a way for me to connect with my audience, so I relate to the idea of "its not doing as well" but THATS OK!

Always helpful and eye-opening to see the numbers. I can totally understand how much fun it would be to put together these boxes, it's too bad that some people just want "stuff" because Patreon is supposed to be a place where people can support you, not shop for stuff. But I'm glad that you sort of found a workaround. OH, and by the way, I watch every one of your videos and have since you were working from home :)

My memberships are growing and I was considering outsourcing, I'll have to check but thanks to you, I think it's a little to soon. Don't you have to take into account how many of what you are earning is going into taxes ? In france with the entrepreneur status, we have to give away 22% of what people are paying when it's from a subscription or when we sell digital product but it's "only" 11% when it's a physical product from the online shop. Do you also have this much taxes on your turnover ?

Breaking down costs is super interesting! I'm wondering if you wanted to up the costs even to $18 for the physical boxes or of you think people would drop out. Costs have gone up and you shouldn't have to just absorb all of the costs.

Question, why don't you make the cost more for patrons if they want a box? You should be paying yourself! 😅
@Emily Harvey Art Correct. You can't change a tier, but you can add a separate tier at a higher price point and close/hide the previous tier that you are replacing. Treat both tiers the same in Patreon, but all new paying patrons will have to pay the new price point. All current patrons will be grandfathered in to the lower price point, which may also encourage your patrons to not "tier hop" on your "off" months (and theoretically you can do it every month if you wanted, if the pricing is actually profitable and what it should be!
I did this with my $7 tier and "changed" it to $10. Not only did I price it higher but I am also working less (am I only producing one new exclusive painting tutorial a month rather than two) and would you guess, I have just as many new patrons in that tier as I do the old tier (and some have even upgraded to the new price to support me more)!
If people want what you have, they will pay for it. Don't be afraid to charge what you should be charging (and frankly deserve!). Don't sell yourself short. As an artist, it's really easy to do that (ask me how I know 🤣), but just because you love what you do doesn't mean you should do it for free!
Bare in mind, though, adding a tier (at least in my own experience) can be a bit of work (but soooo worth it)! Patreon didn't automatically give access to all the content below that tier when I created it. I had to go in individually to every single post and grant access to the new tier I created. Because of this, I ended up creating 3 or 4 new tiers at different pricing points (and simply hid them) so that if I wanted to use them in the future, they would already have access to all of the content. It's much easier to do it all at once than to have to do it twice or 3 times down the road (with even more content to have to give access to). It took some time before I watched a complete video. I, as I am sure your many fans enjoy the information you give about content; however over the short time I’ve watched, I notice you don’t like to show your illustrating process. People have always watched when others color or draw. It’s been that way since grade school for me. I’m just saying.
