Great video, I live here in Pensacola and watched the sinking and it was just awesome, I'm not a diver but love watching the divers, a thanks to all of them for making videos for us to watch.....Have Fun!!!!
Wow, that was brilliant! What a great video. I'm totally sold. 200+ dives there for you, and I bet it NEVER gets old. Probably notice something that you didn't before in previous dives, everytime you do it. Hats off to a great presentation. Buy your friends a round of drinks for that vid. You owe them.
What he meant is that there is always somebody who will say that, no matter how real it is hehe. That was pretty cool, thanks for sharing the video with us.
@gusneaker In the U.S. the flag goes up at sunrise on Naval Stations and at 0800 on Army bases, it comes down at sunset. Offbase it stays up 24/7 in places, as long as it is illuminated, that is fine. On a ship at sea it is up 24/7, light or not. To lower the flag on a ship at sea to to signal surrender.
What people don't understand on here is how, not only does this actually harbour MORE life than if it were not there, but it also is a technique used by biologists worldwide. Maybe a huge aircraft carrier is crazier than usual, but I've dived sites where biologists have sunken fishing trawlers, small ferries, old and disused liveaboards etc. It DOES help the life down there, who thrive on it.
@gusneaker There is no such regulation that keeps the flag from getting wet. I've never seen a flag taken down due to rain. It is an honor for such a warship to go down with the flag still flying.
The problem is with a ship that size the man power and cost is higher then any profit. It just takes to many people and to long to take a ship like that apart. But if you turn it into a reef then it helps the enviorment and attracts divers to the area which boost the encomy for the area. If you watch the documentary about the ship you'll see that it was stripped down to the bare bones. It was called "Megastructures Sinking an Aircraft Carrier" (National Geographic).
If you look at one of my more recent videos, I was on the deck. However it is below the limits of recreational diving. Special training and equipment are needed to safely dive that deep. As far as being a museum is concerned, that is a far more costly endeavor. Plus, it transforms a barren sea floor into a metropolis of underwater life. The Oriskany is still serving.
@3DG71646 "ruin the habitat," are you kidding? Ship wrecks or even just concrete and steel dump piles turn lifeless sand flats into flourishing natural reefs. Ever heard of reef balls? Same concept. Ships seem to do the best job of it though.
Considering that this was made 9 years ago, using free music, that's about as good as we could do! Also, this was used at a trade show originally, music was not really a focal point.
They can't just run these ships until they meet their end. The cost of running a ship like that is unimaginable. We can't just keep using the ones we have, because our military is constantly upgrading (a new ship every 5 or 6 years). Due to the cost of running the old ones, they all meet similar ends to this one. It would be great if they could just come out with a mega carrier, but that too would be prohibitively expensive, and obsolete at some point.
Were any of these scenes of the flight deck? It seems most of the videos I've watched of dives to the Oriskany rarely if ever show any divers on the flight deck.
Average life of a destroyer/cruiser/frigate is about 25 years. Essex class carriers (Oriskany) 40 years Nuclear powered carriers 52 years (U.S.S. enterprise CVN-65 commissioned 1961 due to be retired in 2013)
@gusneaker "Oh, better that her shattered hulk Should sink beneath the wave; Her thunders shook the mighty deep, And there should be her grave; Nail to the mast her holy flag, Set every threadbare sail, And give her to the god of storms, The lightning and the gale!" -Old Ironsides poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
Interesting--I never knew this was where the Oriskany ended up. My dad has had a scuba license for years; I'd love to do it, too, but my ears don't clear when I hold my nose and blow to try to equalize the pressure--so unfortunately snorkeling and skin-diving to about 15 feet seems to be my limit!
It would be a one time shot in the arm $ wise to sell it for scrap. Sink it as an artificial reef and it pays off for years in tourist $ and making up for loss of natural reefs.
Sport divers dont want to have to decompress.....90 ft is the nice maximum dive depth where you can stay for a bit. I went to 110 once missed the reef and still used up 80% air in five minutes
@3DG71646 - Cody, this isn't, "littering the ocean floor". It actually helps create more life and helps marine life by creating an artificial reef for them. This has absolutely nothing to do with money, but helping the oceans and all the marine life in them and creating artificial reefs has been done for many, many years all over the world. So please, put away the class-envy and hatred bologna. A poor man never provided anyone a job!
Same thing was going to happen to Ark Royal glad it didn't, never want to see a carrier being sunk just for the fun of divers, Should of been preserved as a museum
That much pure metal outside of its ore form, is priceless. If the contractors are too corrupt and full of gangsters, or aren't paying out enought graft, then those hulks must be mothballed and broken up later.

good funky beat and magnificent underwater filming.

Starting @ 4:13: very nice to see Old Glory waving w/ the current.
Enjoyed this video, thumbs up from us and cheers from sunny IGY Simpson Bay Marina, Sint Maarten in the Caribbean.
I remember seeing this before it was sunk.At a harbor in Pensacola.

lovely! i'm from Mobile and am currently living in Wisconsin. miss the Gulf so much.
@pop2pjr She's still a grand ship.

I like how you went with the Seinfeld soundtrack album as backing music for the dive video.

I expect the depth was carefully thought out, even the bridge at 70'...most divers are not going to hang around too long?
amazing.
very nice wreck, how deep can it go?

Ive dived down really deep about 24000 feet found alot of shipwreacks really cool
So glad I live in Pensacola(((:

My point exactly, they retire them when a new carrier comes out to replace them. Constantly upgrading to new and better, more efficient weaponry.
I know what you are saying but do realize how much it would cost to fix it up.? The ship was a rust bucket. Plus it was a non nuke
it creates habitat,,,what better use than to use a tool of war for lfe,
Cool Music ;-)

you want to see where it all started? MILANO black and white movie parts 1-3 amazing diver stuff and film noir, wow......

@tobbzor you know that would be pretty badass to have your gear on and do that it would be like something out of a movie lol
It would be a one time shot in the arm $ wise to sell it for scrap. Sink it as an artificial reef and it pays off for years in tourist $ and making up for loss of natural reefs.
great video...
im curiouse...i see people have said alot about it being messed up now...how bad is it destroyed now?
😳
Did you write the music? It fits the video perfectly.
Has it really been almost 6 years since that thing was sunk. It seems like just 2 or 3.
dude its not a wreck they did that on purpose i watched a thin on the discovery channel they sunk it for that reason, instead of scrapping it
Sport divers dont want to have to decompress.....90 ft is the nice maximum dive depth where you can stay for a bit.

how far can u avctually go inside it? must be welded shut at a certain point for safty reasons? get lost in there XD
Its only an 18 hour flight from Nairobi, Kenya !
I'm here after watched sinking documentary about it
You look like you know alot about it, can you tell me when they sunk it?!=)
only an hour and 40 minutes from my house but i dont go scuba diving i go skydiving
funkadelic!
Paw, Same ship.. except in Korea...earned the DFC (F9F's)
Got a Q. How many years will it take for her not to look like a Aircraft Carrier. And just blend into the sea floor?
Strip tease maybe.
1:27 That fish stared at me funny |: |
@flyboy8501 Yaa it would be awesome
I saw it to when it was being striped

Man, that was a frustrating video to watch. What was with all the black title screens?
@nospamorinsults no one ever said it was the best in the world, the description said it was one of the best spots in the United States, not the world
interesting...
LOL yeah
At 1:50 definitely
how deep is this?
This is a commercial.
We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming. . . . . .

Same thing was going to happen to Ark Royal glad it didn't, never want to see a carrier being sunk just for the fun of divers, Should of been preserved as a museum
It was out of date and was sunk to make a reef for fish and wildlife all dangerous componets are taken off and you not allowed inside
That much pure metal outside of its ore form, is priceless.

Useful as a reef, but sad to watch her sink, regardless.
no its not
Вы,что даже флаг с него не сняли прежде,чем потопить!!!?Ебать как должно быть вам стыдно...
why use such low resolution. Lame
2007 for the win!
ahhahahah
All that priceless iron & aluminum, a fortune, sunk to the ocean floor.
This is *stupidity* on a colossal scale.
I disagree. Just giving the metals back to mother earth, AND creating a habitat for fish & corals to grow.
interesting...
