One of the many songs that should have allowed Mr Shear much greater commercial success. I've been listening to him since Got No Breeding back when I was in college. A brilliant songwriter.
Really fantastic song. Tommy conwells virsion are well known,. OriginalJelles virsion is more emotional and sentimental. Chorus work is one of best of 80s American rock.
thanks for posting this, I have 4 of his songs on cassette from the 80's, never imagined I'd hear any more. Can't figure out the chords for 'only make believe'.
Technically, this is by The Reckless Sleepers, which is Jules Shear's group, but it was pretty much a collaborative effort. This song, however, was the only one on the album written by Jules, by himself.
This should be one of those famous songs that always gets played at graduations, prom, etc. It would be perfect. Thanks, Jules, love your work.

I've known the Orleans version, but this (the original) is really fine.
Incredible song, really enjoy Tommy Connell and the Young Rumblers cover, but Shear is an absolutely incredible writer.
One of the best POP writers ever, and Jules writes w/limited guitar skills. If it's in your head, get it out and recorded...........peace.
If you haven't heard it, you should check out Roger McGuinn's version.
