How holistic therapy helped teen leukemia survivor cope

In the midst of challenging treatments that ultimately saved 17-year-old Ryan Castro's life, another service at Cohen Children's Medical Center offered a different kind of relief - reiki. Offered for free as part of the children's hospital's Integrative Holistic Center, both Ryan and his mother, Clarivel, took advantage of the unique offering during long hospital stays, and even now that Ryan is in remission. PIX11's Mr. G brings us this inspiring story. They discuss how these free, integrative therapies support patients and families on their healing journey, as well as staff.
This holistic therapy program was founded in 2013 when a NICU nurse, Kathleen O’Kane, BSN, RN, HN-BC, assessed that the medical center could do more to offer a respite for the patient’s family caregivers and acted on that belief. Now over 10 years old, the program has expanded to a new, larger space to the benefit of patients, families and staff.
