Love this story, Rick. My dad also loved Pat and said he was the greatest guitarist of all time. Took me to see PMG in the 90s. As a young kid, I didn't understand the appeal and just wanted to listen to punk rock. As an adult, I now realize Pat's music was the soundtrack of my life growing up as it was always playing in the house and Pat is now my favorite artist ever, just as he was to my dad. May our fathers rest in peace :)
My wife & I took my parents to see PMG in 2005 during The Way Up tour. My dad was pretty much a classical music snob but on the way home after the concert he said that he could tell that Pat was a genius. I certainly agree with him & would add Lyle Mays to that category as well.
Usually giants do not grow but expand. But most of the change is in us: over time we develop a sensitive ear for the nuances of the giants and basically we learn the code... their courtship of us turns into a love story...
I met him backstage in august ‘22 here in Haugesund, Norway. He lent my Gibson ES 165 for two days to warm up before concert. He is a fantastic musician and a cool guy. He told me about his heritage her in Norway. His grandfather was norwegian. Nice.

Saw him a couple of weeks ago in concert in Missouri. So good. His tech handed me a guitar pick he'd used during the performance. The man is one of the greatest living musicians of this century.

Bach already has over 250 years behind his death, and the cognoscenti _today_ cannot find second place anywhere near him even amongst the greats who have come since, be it Schumann, Chopin or Bruckner, or even Mozart, none of which Pat will ever hold a candle to. Still, there are no objective criteria other than taste that make Kate Bush, Holdsworth or Lyle for that matter or the late Mark Hollis in many ways less important. I personally love Pat butthink Herbie Hancock. changed music more than anyone. relit miles Davis's career who didn't understand him when they first met and had to record them and practice when they left. and the master bullshitter tried saying it was tony williams snare that threw him. not the complex harmonies Herbie was playing. paying him $50 a night saying. it's good money to practice in front of an audience. but seeing Pat solo gig. Made me think a lot as i was left dazed for a week. blew me away. was not expecting such a great life changing experience. was ill and very nearly didn't go. looking back that would of been a massive mistake. i forced myself into the shower and thought. once in a lifetime. couple of paracetamol. the gig actually healed me. felt 10 ft tall when i left and the adrenaline was beating the pain. seen herbie loads. this however probably my fav gig. and i've been fortunate enough to see the best still living. Pat is a special musician. full of ideas
Beautiful! I discovered your (and Lyle's) music in the 1980's, and I won't stop loving it. I am 65 now and hope very much that you stay good for many more years.
So did I - early 80's. I'm 67 and still remember Pat Metheny's Group first concert in Warsaw, Poland after releasing "First Circle". And much more later on with Lyle and without. Always deeply touched and happy to listen to such music miracles.
This is Brazilian music in it essence. Mostly Minas music influences. I can hear Milton Nascimento, Toninho Horta, Guinga, João Bosco etc. He’s been drinking of that long time ago. It just makes it more beautiful. Thanks Pat!
My mom was the one who brought music into my life, and about 40 years ago, we watched together a Pat Metheny concert on Swiss TV because she trusted my taste... she loved it! The music, the playing, the passion readable on Pat's face... Thank you forever for that moment Pat... I've known Pat's music for all my life. My dad would always play his CDs when I was a toddler, specifically his work with in the PMG. That's left a big mark in my taste in music, I'm very thankful for knowing his music, and way more for having him to this day.
As a. proffesional Clock repairman for 53 years, I have restored many MoonDials. They were a standard feature included on grandfather clocks as far back as 1750. Almost every one built today has one. Showing the phase of the moon. Anyone want to know what they are for just reply.

A moon dial would show the progression of the moon phase in its 29 and 1/2 day cycle. From no (0) moon to full moon is 15 days. They planned alot of events according to the moon's scedule. Farmers used the moon cycle to determine planting and harvesting schedules. On a more personal level. A romantic walk in the light of the full moon could be looked forward to. The grandfather clock was an important devise for mankind. A simple time and one that would sure be welcomed by many frustrated with a complicated day and age.we have now. Thanks for asking.
God! Such soul uplifting Pat Metheny aural aesthetic that I have LOVED over the decades. Its reminiscent of some of his older stuff but also got a Beyond The Missouri Sky and One Quiet Night vibe to it. Love Pat Metheny and its a blessing he continues to make beautiful music. Although I'd love to hear some new stuff that sounds like his music from the 80s. I miss that Last Train Home and Bright Size Life kinda sound.
My first time seeing Pat Metheny was the 80/81 Tour, and I have seen the majority of his US Tours since - in all his configurations. His improvisational approach as much as his tone and dynamism are what continues to excite me - a new Metheny release is such a welcome celebration of life.
There is no light and there is only space. Everything is beautiful sound around me and it feels like I'm getting sucked into a black hole. It is so beautiful!

I’ve listened to a LOT of music and have truly varied tastes but Pat has really been the beat of my life.
Hearing Pat Metheny play on The Boston Commons in late 80s was a revelation. No money teenagers from California. Sat outside in marvel as his music carried us all away. The kid from Brazil who spent all of his money on music cassette tapes, lived on Hersey bars and was set upon by angry frat boys for pilfering much needed old tennis shoes hanging high in a tree... he knew... that what Pat did was reverant... transcended time boundries and conditions. Never felt so richly alive in the world as that hot summer night. Gracias maestro.

Have heard him perform live many times in various formats including the brilliant, stunning Orchestrion tour. He is among my greatest inspirations as a player and this newest music speaks directly to my heart as my first guitar was a classical nylon stringer. He's a MASTER. I recall the day after a tour stop in my city, I anxiously read the review from the newspaper's critic, who I noticed was sitting behind me at the show...in his review he wrote "Pat Metheny must be the Michael Jordan of Guitar players". Great analogy!
I've been a fan since my mom turned me on to American Garage in 1979. I saw Pat last Fall at Royce Hall and he talked at length about this nylon-string baritone guitar. What a revelation it is! And now he's going for a deep dive with this lush, bluesy, grooving instrument. Sure hoping he comes through L.A. again before heading to Europe in the Fall.

Oh this one is strong! Has this emotional forward momentum and energy of Pat narrative but also beautiful space for thinking like The Way Up. I don't know if you feel the same , I hear this one played like those Pat Metheny Group stage orchestration storms that took our harts. Some great drummer is rushing through ride cymbals here in my head. I love it! Pat thank you! We love you so much!
The song should be called "Twists and Turns"....just when you think "I know where this is going", it doesn't. Part of Pat's genius I guess. I hear notes of Gershwin, some expansive chords, and of course, "Metheny jazz". Very pretty.

The Pat "seed" was sewn in me before I was into or appreciated jazz. I was 17 yrs in 1987 listening to classic rock when I first heard Pat. It just passed over my head, or so I thought, 32 years later I get it and so lucky I do. A late bloomer. Saw two shows this year and l can't wait for more.

I’ve seen a lot of bands in my 56 years; Pat Metheny Group was the most impressive artistic performance I’ve ever seen.
They were so incredibly musical and multi-dimentional. His post PMG solo outings don't have that quality.

Have heard him perform live many times in various formats including the brilliant, stunning Orchestrion tour. He is among my greatest inspirations as a player and this newest music speaks directly to my heart as my first guitar was a classical nylon stringer. He's a MASTER.
I recall the day after a tour stop in my city, I anxiously read the review from the newspaper's critic, who I noticed was sitting behind me at the show...in his review he wrote "Pat Metheny must be the Michael Jordan of Guitar players". Great analogy!
I've been a fan since my mom turned me on to American Garage in 1979. I saw Pat last Fall at Royce Hall and he talked at length about this nylon-string baritone guitar. What a revelation it is! And now he's going for a deep dive with this lush, bluesy, grooving instrument. Sure hoping he comes through L.A. again before heading to Europe in the Fall.

Oh this one is strong! Has this emotional forward momentum and energy of Pat narrative but also beautiful space for thinking like The Way Up. I don't know if you feel the same , I hear this one played like those Pat Metheny Group stage orchestration storms that took our harts. Some great drummer is rushing through ride cymbals here in my head.

Pat is a jazz guitar 🎸 virtuoso. Whether he plays acoustically or electronically doesn’t matter
The song should be called "Twists and Turns"....just when you think "I know where this is going", it doesn't. Part of Pat's genius I guess. I hear notes of Gershwin, some expansive chords, and of course, "Metheny jazz". Very pretty.

The Pat "seed" was sewn in me before I was into or appreciated jazz. I was 17 yrs in 1987 listening to classic rock when I first heard Pat. It just passed over my head, or so I thought, 32 years later I get it and so lucky I do. A late bloomer. Saw two shows this year and l can't wait for more.
This is so cool. Cant say enough the tone, technique, composition, and production just so rich. You can actually hear him breathing during that outro.

Pat Metheny is at his best when the bass is riffing off at beat 1 and 3! His music gets such a cool groove that he seems to love himself.
The first time I saw Pat I was 16 years old, at the Palece Theater in Albany NY . I became a life long fan, so much so. That I am taking My two teenage boy to see him tonight at the Parker playhouse, in Ft.lauderdale
