I am not a gallery owner, but I curate work for a non-profit gallery. I cannot tell you how important it is to avoid showing up with an armload of original work. There are few things I hate more than having to review an unsolicited artist's original work by being put on the spot. This guy's tips are right on- An iPad or sending images AFTER making contact with the gallery is the way to do it. Find their preference of how they review work.
When I approached a gallery the owners asked to see original work as well as asking for photos. The two owners were very happy to look at my work and they seemed to have a more personal approach than other places.
Wow, that's really cool of you to have this on your channel. I was recently wondering about this very process. It seemed intimidating, but Mr. Carey makes the process clear. Thanks, Leonardo!
heyy .. start with filling in the whole area will just one toned pencil. then use an eraser to draw little lines on that and the darken around the erased areas to create the illusion of 3D folds :) Best of luck with the project!
first of all thanks a lot! Second of all, i actually will be doing this for a dear friend of mine...he has a serious block to sell his stuff, in fact he has never sold a single painting. But his work is devastating, and i agreed with him to do this part for him..act as his agent, more or less. My question: anything i should change or add in approaching galleries, besides of course that it's not my work? thanks a million, j.
thank Brainard, very good simple instructions makes great sense to me, I am resolved to give it a go this year and I will be using your method Thanks again - best ashar
Thank you, sir. Very interesting and useful information and advice. May I ask for the reasons why it is advised to not bring original work (of a reasonable size)?
Please please please do a tutorial on wrinkles on cloth. I have an assignment due Thursday where I have to draw my un-made bed. They want me to focus on the wrinkles in the sheets but I'm totally lost. Please please help!!!
Locally, galleries likes someone who is already big. More is given to he who already has. They are a store indeed and would love to know your $$$$$$ 💵💵💲 value.
I wish someone would tell us why gallery owners are the way they are? Why are the proliferies more important than the in actual paintings? Why else do they ask, How many paintings do you do each year? (Because they know Van Gogh did 250) Or do you have a drawing under all this paint? (Because artists that create as they go along are just better) Or how long did it take you to paint that? (Because speed and proficiency equals genius) I just lie to them, but is that right?
I finally finished your post here! Do you want to know what I think? No?....stop reading, but, if you want to get some insight...I think the Art World is dead! In the music field (that has its own problems) Josh Grobin opens his mouth and everyone says, YES, you have to be a singer! In the painting business it is nothing like that! What do you say to that? Stop giving help? I did not think so! Well, we do not have galleries in each town like they used to be and where are the critics in newspapers (never mind that, where are the papers) like before? I am sure I (like others) I am seeing things through my own experience, but, I still want your opinions here!
.....And then on top of that, Gallery Owners have this one saying in their head.....and while you are showing them your work remember what you are about to read here...because the Gallery Owner is thinking this: "You have to go through a lot of paint to produce 35 great paintings in your whole career". So you go in knowing they are not to impressed with what they are seeing! What do we do with that? Why is it that when others make comments they get replies to what they print? When I make a comment and write the truth, no one responds? Well, you have not read it yet? We will see!
