    Didn't really expect much different. A lot of companies do this to their old hardware to sell more of what they already have. Plus "gaming" things tend to be more expensive no matter what, even when not making sense.

    What a helpful video and everything is straight to the point. DigitalFoundry with Richard is sooo good :)
    Essentially since the Xbox One's SATA connection is likely limited to SATA II internally, and this cap remains on external drives via USB 3.0, it seems it's better to just go for large size, perhaps an external 3.5 inch 4-5TB hard drives that regularly sell for $120-$130 on Amazon US (or whatever it costs in your native country) over these smaller 2.5 inch more expensive 2TB drives.
    I really don't see the point here of prioritizing 2.5 inch size since the Xbox One isn't a small console to start with. Might as well get more storage with a 3.5 external imo.

    I have a seagate 5tb external and when u turn off the Xbox , the hard drive stays on. Is there a way to turn off the drive once I turn off the Xbox or will it always stay on . Only way I can get it to turn off is by doing a full shutdown . Or can I unplug the drive once the Xbox is on sleep low energy mode and before I turn on the Xbox I plug back In ?

    Hello DF ! I love this kind of video ! It is possible for you to made one day a video review about SSD official and all the series Game Drive Hub by Seagate on One (and PS4) ? There 2,4 and 8To ! I buy the 8To (Thanks you Black Friday ! I have it for the middle of his normal price !!!) and I think it is more faster than a 2"5 HDD external or the internal HDD in XB1X (who are a 2"5 HDD). I think the 8To are the Barracuda or the Desktop HDD Seagate with 5400RPM or 7200RPM and 256Mo of cache memory, this explain why I feel it is faster. I'm really happy to have it.

    • @mrpositronia

      +mrpositronia I was asking about the firmware of the drives. As far as i can tell by watching the video all they did was comparing the labels to determine if the drives were identical. Labels don't mean anything. Drives can have the same labels and model numbers and have totally different firmwares which maybe optimized or somehow special for the Xbox One.

    It's not surprising that the "official" drive costs more. The price increase is from "official" Microsoft branding and that BS 14 day Xbox Live code which no one should use unless your current membership runs out and you need a few extra days. I really like how this guy doesn't dick around and just gets to the point with facts and backs it up with comparisons.
    Anyway, I would not suggest Seagate. They have a Samsung branding, but from research, I found that most people would advise against Seagate as they have the highest failure rate among the other brands. As a matter of fact, I just got myself a PS4 (the newer model with the matte finish cover and hardware improvements) along with a Western Digital Blue 1 TB HDD. I figure that even with less than 2TB, I should be okay with 1TB for a little bit since I do not intend on buying that many PS4 games as it is; only the ones I really want. I don't have as much time as I'd like as it is so buying a lot of PS4 games is not advisable for my current living situation. I work 7 days a week, 11 hours a day. >_<
    Anyway~ Sucks that Xbox One doesn't allow you to swap out HDDs. I hope that at the least, they make an HDD upgrade set like the Xbox 360 and have like a 2TB or more capacity on that one.
    With that all said, this is another reason why I think most people should just go with PS4 instead of Xbox One unless you absolutely are a fan of the exclusives Halo, Forza, and or Gears of War. Because as of now, that's really (and still) the only thing the Xbox has going for it. And with the PS4 using a similar (but better) hardware set up, you cannot argue now that the architecture is too complicated for developers to make games for (like on the PS3) or it doesn't have as much RAM or whatever like during the PS3 era.
    I know that sounded a bit fanboy-ish, but you cannot argue now. And if you do, then you're just delusional.

    • @MrFight6666
      @MrFight6666 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +xxnike629xx You can use an external drive. Usually they're cheaper, especially when you get up to over 2 TB's.

    • @xxnike0629xx
      @xxnike0629xx 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrFight6666 I am aware that on the PS4 you can use an external drive, but I prefer to keep things internal for consoles.
      Besides, I have a 1TB Western Digital Blue HDD now for the PS4 which I just got. As a matter of fact, when I got the PS4 (the newer model), I immediately swapped out the HDD since I figure I might as well start with the bigger and better quality HDD from the beginning.

    • @jacobwhiting914
      @jacobwhiting914 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +xxnike629xx You are so misinformed. You can use an external on the ps4 but only to store movies and music not games so it's pointless. I bought a 4TB for my Xbox and store all of my games on it. You can go up to 16TB for an external on the Xbox and it supports two external drives so that's 32TB of space. Pretty good for "inferior hardware."

    1. Can you ensure me that none of my saved data from each game will not get deleted when it's transferred?
    2. What's the difference between pressing 'install new things here' and 'keep current location'?
    3. Is this the best external hard drive on the market for Xbox One?
    4. Also, do I have the option of deciding what games I can have installed on my internal hard drive and the external hard drive? Like, for example, could I install a game I don't play so much on the external hard drive only so I could free up space on my internal hard drive for another game? I don't have to install every single game I've got, do I?

    My XB1 HDD Filled up and I picked up a 5TB WD HDD last week for $120 plus tax at BB. The positive is that I would never have to worry about HDD space for the XB1 (even though I only buy exclusives for it and my PS4). The downsides are that I need to use it's power supply (since it's a desktop external HDD and not a portable one) and at night I can see the white light flashing. I'm debating on returning it and getting the 3TB WD portable HDD from BB as well for $110.

    Interesting thing though, you look at the 8tb xbox drive and its like...a little over $200 or so. That SAME HARD DRIVE without the xbox casing and clearly labeled for use in a windows PC is over $1000. And again, it is the same model of hard drive. the only difference is that the gaming console drives are formatted to what ever OS your console uses, thus allowing for games to be installed and run from it. The PC one is automatically formatted to NTFS. So basically, you want to put 8TB in your laptop? Get an 8TB xbox or playstation drive and through USB, reformat the drive to NTFS. Then clone your existing HDD data to the new drive, then swap them to get a massive upgrade. You know, standard steps for upgrading the HDD in a laptop that only has 1 internal drive connection. Just has the added step of a partition reformat.

    Yes I knew the Xbox version wouldn't be any different!! Purely made so people who don't research buy it because it says Xbox so they think that's the only hard drive that will work with the Xbox

    Great to get my suspicions confirmed. It's actually a bit of a rip off; I can see some fans would love the swish green colour with the Xbox logo for their systems, but really. Is it worth the extra price? for me no. Thanks for clearing this up.

    If you're gonna get a Seagate Drive make it an SSHD as they last much longer and are much quicker.... Also the fact that you can't switch out the HDD in the Xbox One without voiding your warranty is very annoying, I hope the Elite version with the SSHD in is not overpriced.

      +Paul Venables - I wish it weren't so (because I want to like Seagate's HDDs), but I think you're absolutely correct.
      In the past 5 years I've had not one, not two but four Seagate drives somehow suddenly stop functioning (dead as a doornail - all of 'em). And in contrast, in the past 7 years, none of my Hitachi or Western Digital HDDs have given me any problems.

    • @V8_Diva

      depending on the drive. if it's 5200 rpm instead of 7200, it will be a lot slower. also, the hard drive should be of quality. Try Seagate, they make great portable hard drives.

      it Formats it by itself on xbox

    • @marioysikax
      @marioysikax 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guessing it's because NTFS is basically microsofts proprierary format. Even Linux uses it's complete own code which is reverse engineered to give it support if I'm not completely wrong. Also it's far easier for user to use FAT32, where something like EXT4 would be unuseable with Windows PC if needed. I guess FAT32 is also requirement in Android phones for SD cards. (However Nintendo fixed this by using it's very own format which is tied to systems ID so that's 2 TB of wasted space for me which can't be even backed up...)
      Same with controller, XInput is basically Xbox standard which microsoft forced with GFWL for PC, that's why PS3 accepts all DirectInput controllers and Dualshock 4 works as standard DirectInput controller. Even though microsoft themselves made DirectInput depreaced format and still push XInput now by making it only acceptable standard with Windows Apps. I guess just another reason to hope that PC wouldn't be dependant on single company also owning console, as DirectInput is actually so much better under Linux: vine.co/v/OM00rdtZ6LF
      Though you should also take into the account that with PS3 and PS4, you are free to upgrade internal hard drive as well to avoid all the extra hasshle with external ones and use USB sticks to move data if necessary. Again, if I'm not horrible missinformed internal uses other form of formatting. Though USB sticks also need to be FAT32 (learned this when I didn't know why on of my USB sticks didn't show up on PS3 at all)

    • @ShadowriverUB
      @ShadowriverUB 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Mikko Valorinta (Marioysikax) DS3 and 4 are USB HID controllers, USB standard same as Mouse and Keybourd standards (with exception of DS3 which need melformed init command to activate it and needs driver) and old DirectInput use them out of the box, dont need anythind special. Xinput requires special drivers to support it. Problem with USB HID is that its really outdated, it only supports buttons and axis, no motion controls or vibration motors which seem to be standard now days.
      File systems has nothing to do with cost, by SATA and old ATA you can read and write any data anywhere in disk, any drive can be formated to any file system.
      Linux does support NTFS but read-only, you need NTFS 3G over FUSE (external file system driver outside the kernel) for write support
