  • Internet Options and Telecom in Puerto Rico - What are the best options for working remote or living in Puerto Rico?
    AT&T and T-Mobile have the best coverage & signal strength for mobile phone service. AT&T was recently acquired by Liberty, but I have not noticed any change in service quality. FirstNet government sponsored program for First Responders still uses AT&T on the island.
    Claro is the local Puerto Rico telephone company for mobile service starting at $20/month.
    There's 4g coverage in the entire island with Claro, AT&T Liberty and T-Mobile. Verizon works in "extended network mode" with Claro's infrastructure so verify with them on the limitations of the service when out of coverage. Sprint is usually the worst service on the island.
    5G rollout started in limited spots around the island, including Palmas del Mar.
    Living in Puerto Rico: Liberty and Claro internet offer great service coverage for internet. Claro internet users report latency from most servers (ping) is about 30-50ms.
    Claro DSL - Fiber option in metro San Juan

    Liberty Cable - www.libertypr.com/internet
    $60/month is Up to 90 Mbps download speed, Up to 9 Mbps upload speed
    $80/ month Up to 250 Mbps download speed with Up to 25 Mbps upload speed
    $171/month is Up to 500 Mbps download speed with Up to 30 Mbps upload speed
    HughesNet (Backup Satellite internet) - plans as low as $60/month
    Purchase satellite dish and install around $500 (one-time fee)

    StarLink is scheduled to come to Puerto Rico in 2022

    Thank you Jen! I love your videos! Planning on moving back home after 21 years! I am from Arecibo and my experience with AT&T was not the best. I never had signal. At the states we switched to Xfinity mobile (which works with Verizon) and when I went back to PR this Summer, I had no issues. I had signal for the fist time at my mom's house. So I guess it's depending on the area. Keep the videos coming! 😊

    Jen, perfect video! My family is going to be there in August. I'm planning on working from there, but need to make sure I have good internet. My plan has been to get a cellular hot spot from T-Mobile, with the hope that it'll give me fast enough internet to be able to have video meetings, and everything I've been doing from home for the last 15 months.
    The house is in San Juan, sort of at the South end of it. Sort of around where 199 and 52 intersect. Do you think my plan will work? It's encouraging to hear you say T-Mobile is one of the best carriers on the island.

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Find out if the house has Liberty or Claro wifi, and if you can use that during your stay. It is always good to have a couple options for internet on the island.

      @@JenThereDoneThat we just spent 3 months trying to cancel Liberty :) we still owe them $50. My wife's mom had it before she passed away. For the 2 or 3 times a year we're going to be down there, we're hoping a cellular hot spot will work for us. We'll learn a lot this August.

    Great info and timely since I need to move to PR and WiFi is essential. Palmas looks good but Cabo Rojo seems like more “bang for the buck.” Can u recommend a good realtor? I saw ur recent vid on 🚀rent in Palmas and 🤔😯☹️ so Cabo Rojo might be a better option

    • @JenThereDoneThat
      @JenThereDoneThat  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Home inventory is really low around the island right now and realtors are not very good at returning anyone's calls. Start your search on www.clasificadosonline.com/, you may be better off dealing with owners directly (that is how I found my place).

      HughesNet is not as fast or reliable as Liberty. I used it as my backup since it is a metered provider and my monthly bill would be crazy high with the amount of data that I push. For me, Liberty and HughesNet is the right internet combination.
