    Calatheas are infamous thrip magnets. The only one I have for years and does not cheat on me is calathea triostar. She’s very forgiving, in winter I keep her in a dark corner, in summer she’s outside on the kitchen windowsill. Other calatheas are not allowed in our place.
    I had the same issue with crotons as you did, it was right in front of the balcony door, looking miserable all the time. After I got rid of it I saw happy crotons grow outdoors in Spain. Some plants just cannot be grown in the UK (;

      Haha yes I now have a no calathea rule too 😂

    Well that was painful (I’ve lost many of these recently also), and It did not make me feel better 😂 I kid. Thanks so much for the dose of reality. 🤗

    Lemme think... tradesc.Nanouk (thrips); pachira aquatica (root rot); ph.silver sword (major spider mite infestation); golden pothos (root rot), a huge fern (mealies); Variegated African violet (root mealies). I'm so impressed with my Aglaonemas. Spider mites and thrips are just not interested in them. Oh, and on a tangent - at the weekend I found an Aglaonema chartreuse in a local DIY/Garden Center! That had been on the list since ever you mentioned it in one of your uploads. I found one online, but that would have cost me 35 bucks including P&P and I hesitated, so imagine my delight when I snagged one locally for 15.

      Wow that was a real bargain! I’ve seen how expensive they are online too. That one really must have been meant for you! I’m starting to think Aglaonemas are the way to go too, or just any plant that is pest resistant 😅

      @@Plantswithjem There are just so many varieties... I'll take them over fussy calatheas and dieffenbachias any day. I've also grown wary of syngoniums. No matter how carefully I check them in the shop, as soon as I get home, I find a thrip. I have three and am not planning on growing that collection.

    "Garden in the sky". LOL. I also lost a Dieffenbachia Camille. I really think this is just a super finicky plant.

      You could be right. The standard version seems a lot more hardy.

    I had a dracaena for 2 years and I just had to trash it last night. Nothing would make it healthy again

      Oh no. Good excuse to buy a new plant though! 😅

    You're not the only one who has had trouble with that pink aglaonema. All the pink and red ones seem to be that way, just difficult

    • @Plantswithjem
      @Plantswithjem  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s a shame because I love the pink and red ones. I’ve had issues with my pink syngoniums too, it insists on being a buffet for the spider mites. Maybe the colours attract them?

    • @JuanellHopper
      @JuanellHopper 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Plantswithjem maybe they do. I have realized I don't have any pink plants. I was thinking about getting a pink or red aglaonema again but I am not sure I really want to because they never grow and look beautiful like my green ones. I don't even have a pink calathea but I do have the triostar.
