- f you have a child who struggles with Math retention, then you may be asking yourself, "Why is this so hard? Can we find peace with math?" There's definitely a balance between finding something that works for the struggling student but also something that the homeschool Mom CAN and WANTS to teach! Can we find this balance?
That is the question I've been asking in my search for the right homeschool math curriculum for my middle school daughter. As I've shared our challenges here on youtube, YOU, MY AUDIENCE, have been quite the encouragers and influencers yourselves! This homeschool math curriculum, LEARN MATH FAST, has been recommended so many times to me. Many of you said your child experienced the same struggles and with this curriculum, it finally clicked! So, I had to give LEARN MATH FAST a try and I'm sharing my experience so far, as well as explaining how the program is intended to work!

Is the Learn Math Fast System a supplemental program or a stand-alone curriculum?
That depends on the age of the student. An older student (12+) will get all the math they need to enroll in college level courses such as precalculus. However, topics such as telling time, the calendar, Roman numerals and tally marks are considered math, but are not taught in the Learn Math Fast System, so those topics will need to be supplemented. When teaching a younger student, we recommend using LMF every other day while teaching those four topics on the alternate days.

Hi Rachel, I hope you see this. I don't know your personal story so this may be redundant, but at the chance that it may help you or someone else I wanted to share.
We discovered with our nearly adult son that his ADHD + a touch of Asperger's + Short term memory issues were related to nutritional deficiencies. Stay with me, this changed our life.
After tons of research and years of trial and error we discovered that our son was not only deficient in B-vitamins (especially B12) but also that our diet (carb-heavy) + the nutritional deficiencies was exacerbating his academic and behavioral issues.
We switched to a protein heavy (20g-30g animal protein per meal) with whole fats from butter, eggs, whole milk, etc. and lower carbs with NO SNACKING between meals (unless his activity level demanded it). The lower the carbs, the happier and more "chill" he is. Side note, oddly enough red food coloring made him hyper and unfocused and apparently this is a real thing, so we ditched any food with that in it.
We started giving him TMG (trimethylglycine) with a methylated B-complex every morning, Magnesium Glycinate with EVERY meal, and a regular multivitamin at lunch or dinner and made sure he did something active every day.
He calmed down, he became happier, his memory improved, he became able to focus better, more peace in our home, school stopped being such a slog, I could go on.
He's was still the same boy with all his quirky attributes but the difference was night and day and our family life improved significantly.
This may not be the answer for you, but it was worth examining for us.
I’ve heard most of this before (especially the red food dye!) so yea, there’s definitely something to the diet. I’ve also heard that probiotics make a big difference.
Thank you for those suggestions!! My daughter isn’t hyper, she is ADD but they call it all ADHD now. But the high protein…high fat…I love the idea but man…it would be a challenge for her to do. She doesn’t like meat! 😳 or nuts.

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan Yes, we've done the probiotics too! Every child is so different, our main concerns were our son's short-term memory issues and the self-esteem issues that went along with his ADHD and difficulty grasping certain things and reading social situations. He's on his way to college now for chemical engineering and that will be a whole new adventure for all of us!

Thx for sharing this! My 9th grade daughter has similar issues and we just discovered in the spring that her ferritin (stored iron) was low. Supplements really helped! She started hanging on to math concepts so much easier. I will have to try some of these other things.

Sooo glad y’all jumped on board…this math curriculum literally saved us. Our child did the lesson with me on Monday then the problems divided during the week…GAME CHANGER. Praying that it checks all the boxes for your daughter…it’s aggravating trying to find the right one that works.

For me, it had to find a practical application. I turned grocery shopping into an assignment. We started with a budget and a list. My middle-schooler was given a calculator and was in charge of purchases. I also put him in charge of measuring flooring for an upcoming purchase of flooring. He's also in charge of how much gas we purchase and how many miles we drive. He can tell us how many miles-per-gallon we are getting. When that number goes down, it's time for the car to get a tune-up. Practical. Keep it practical.

I won't die on any hill for a curriculum because what works one year may not work for the next. My oldest son (15) has ADHD as well and also struggles with retaining information. Math has been a HUGE struggle for a number of years for him! When we started homeschooling 4 years ago he used math-u-see and it was great. However, he grew tired of doing the exact same thing over and over and over... and after a period of time of not doing it he would forget it. I probably should have simply stuck with it. Anyway, we tried Teaching Textbooks and that was dumpster fire for him, so I landed on LMF for his 8th grade year. I was so excited and ready to get him caught up!! Fractions and everything before that was great, we loved that it was no fluff! But once we got to pre-algebra it stopped working well for him. It unfortunately didn't seem to spiral enough for him... it would go through a new concept in a lesson and then would move onto another concept without circling back to the previous one, which was super tough. I'm terrible at algebra and was less than helpful. I was truly in tears and at a loss- I had no idea how to help him. And then I came across Denison Math!! Which (for now) seems to be a great fit for him! Finding what works is going to be different for every kiddo, and that's one of the many beauties of homeschooling!
I completely agree!!! With LMF, I feel like you could camp on a lesson longer. And m especially if teacher is comfortable teaching the concept. But if you’re not….ugh. I’m sorry. Funny thing, before you mentioned Denison, I was going to tell you to look into that! That’s another one I’ve seen recommended a few times! (It was one that was recommended more than once in my TT video!). I hope it works for you!!!

We have been doing homeschool for nine years and in those years we have utilized various popular math curriculums without avail. One year and a half ago we gave the opportunity to Learn Math Fast starting from the first book with my 7th and 10th grade students and it has been a blessing to our family.

I saw an unschooled kid (knorpp and south's YT channel) use this curriculum. His goal was to spend 30 days learning one new skill for an entire year. He hadn't taken math since 3rd or 4th grade, and then completed this entire course in 30 days in what would be his 10th grade year; and he PASSED THE SATs! There's got to be something to this!

It has totally changed my daughter's attitude toward Math and given her confidence in her abilities. I did begin at her current level and she completed Algebra, but I found that it was well worth the money and time to have her begin again from book one.

Thank you SO MUCH for this!!! I have come back to this video several times, and finally ordered it with your code just a moment ago. My daughter is going into 10th grade, and really struggled with Algebra last year. She struggles with a lot of the basic math like multiplication.
When she went into 3rd grade, I switched her to a different school. She went from just filling out worksheets on problems (like 7 + 9 and 8 X 1), just beginning to cover a bit of multiplication in second grade to complex multiplication and story problems that she had never seen before. We spent many frustrating evenings with tears because the newer school was much more advanced. Once I talked to the teacher, she spent more time with my daughter and helped her get caught up. I have always thought since then that they really screwed her up in the area of math.
This will be my third year homeschooling, and I had thoughts before of going back to basics but I didn't know how. This curriculum totally made sense to me! I love how they don't seem to make you feel stupid as you go back to basics in level 1 book. I really appreciate you sharing this, and I truly hope that my daughter will not HATE math so much that she avoids it like the plague. I am putting the Algebra book from last year aside for now (we only got through 5 chapters last year) and see how far we can get with this. I ordered the first 2 books in hopes that we can get through both of them this year. Thank you so much for talking about this curriculum!!!

I've been thinking about math-U-see for my to-be 8th and 6th graders because I also think the mastery approach will be more helpful to them. Sadly, we stopped LMF after book 1, went to TGTB, but a year later, got stuck because we were back in spiral. So, after seeing this video, I'm reminded of the mastery approach in LMF and the simplicity (even more than MUS) and leaning this direction. Tha ks so much! My to-be 10th grader struggled with Shorman, but we're leaning towards Denison Algebra with her. I know I can't be at each of my kids' side for math. Shormann does seems advanced. It’s solid. But it’s also difficult. Denison is also on my list for when my middle child may need more advanced math. But we’ll see!

I’ve been wanting to see this! I’m so glad you made a video. I have a high schooler that needs a good review over everything. I found Ace Paces Business Math begins with simple addition and it works it’s way up to high school math. I am using it with my tenth grader along with Denison Geometry. I’m not making her finish business math this year, I told her she can take the next three years to work on it so she isn’t overwhelmed with two math curriculums.

I love your channel!!! I’m binge watching you during this week. Teaching Textbooks lost me so much time. I have an older daughter who has dyscalculia. So while I was figuring out things for her, I put my “fast at math” son on TT.
I’m Still trying to catch up 3 children in math. Ugh.

It has been a tearless year for us once I introduced LMF…except for that one day when I tried to cram in a couple final lessons before year end. My bad. I apologized and we stopped. Truly, this program has been so good for my girl, and we’ll be heading into the second half of Book 1 as she starts Grade 4 this September. Maybe we’ll be able to finish Book 2 by June! No rush. At her pace. Look forward to hearing how your math goes this year.

I'm excited for you & really looking forward to seeing how this goes for you and the kids! I have heard of this math. It is intriguing...but, like you said, if it isn't broken don't fix it! My oldest is in her last year of Masterbooks math this year and then I am going to have to make some decisions. At this point, I am looking in to Denison Algebra. I have also heard amazing things about this math and have a local friend who is using it with her son and it has revolutionized math for them.
I know I've heard (somewhere!) that kids can learn all the math they need to know even if they don't crack open one math book until age 12. It sounds like Learn Math Fast believes this too! This looks absolutely fantastic and I am very excited to see how it goes for your kids this year!

Denison math-that one is one that came up a few times in that TT video! So it’s on my list as well. (There are so many to choose from!! It’s amazing how one can be golden for one child and just not click for another.) good for you for sticking to Masterbooks!! There’s also something to be said for just trusting the process. Sometimes I worry about curriculum hopping too much!…especially with math. 6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of another. 😁

You are sooo talking about my son. I cannot let him on the computer at all to do school work. He is in high school so a lot is done on his own and WOW! the ADHD is real when it comes to doing work on the computer. We began using LMF last year and it has been wonderful! Granted, I did start homeschooling him his freshman year and then discovered that he had so many gaps that needed to be filled. Since he was in high school already, we did the 1st & 2nd book in 3 months but the 3rd book slowed him down a bit. We will be in the 4th book this fall. I love teaching math, in fact I have a degree in teaching math. I have found LMF incredible. I can't wait to hear your follow up to this video.
Yah!!! That's so encouraging to hear that you love LMF. My brother is also a high school math teacher and when I told him about it, he was skeptical. BUT.....he and I differ on educational opinions a lot anyway. LOL!
I think going through the 1st two books even with my high schooler could be beneficial just bc it teaches so many great strategies for mental math. Hmmm....

New to me. Intrigued. We did Math-U-See for 1st and have been doing MathSeeds (app and workbook) through 3rd, where it ends. I'm idea shopping for 4th grade + curriculum. Considering Teaching Textbooks since the kids are used to spiral approach, but I feel like my oldest could benefit from mastery. Adding this to my list of programs to evaluate. Thank you for this video. We been through a lot of math programs as well. We discovered my son needs mastery. We’re currently doing MLFLE but don’t want to continue past level 6. I’ll definitely be checking this out. I noticed there’s not a lot mastery programs that go to high school.
I agree. Mastery seems to be difficult to find as everybody tends towards spiral.
Currently prepping for our school year that’s starting in August and I know we’ll need to do some review from LMF. Since this isn’t spiral, I’m thinking of going back and doing some multiplication and division to ease him into the year and then do a good review of chapters 1 & 2 in Book 2 before starting the last chapter of new concepts. I’m really curious to see how much he retained since this is our first time picking up where we left off from LMF. I’ll give him lots of grace because this summer we did ZERO schooling *gasp* and I know he’ll need a little extra practice.

@@OurHOMEschoolPlan we were using it to firm up math skills for this upcoming year before prealgebra. But this curriculum is what I was really looking for. Wish I had seen this a month ago.
I went ahead and ordered book 1-4 and we are going to try it. I’ve been dreading doing Saxon with my 8th grader. I’ve used it before with my 2 oldest kids who graduated already and we both hated it. They were 7th and 8th when we used it. It works but it can be torture.

I also just found out about LMF, and my 3 boys homeschooling are very similar ages, my middle one I can't leave alone, my youngest is very diligent and proficient in math and my oldest too but he wants a break from Saxon this year. So I will be doing pretty much the exact same thing with my younger and i think the idea with your oldest is great so I think I'll try that too!

I am intrigued! Math has always been a struggle in our homeschool. Switching from Teaching Textbooks to Shormann helped a lot. We will check this out for sure. Thanks for sharing honestly.

shormann is good but takes a lot of time. Probably 2 hours a day if you actually do it. In the end it's better to put the time into it.
when I say "actually do it" I mean, do all the lesson instead of looking for some shortcuts to save time.

I have a 3rd grader with adhd and we also started with dimensions and for the same reasons jumped to teaching textbooks and had the same problem with the iPad. I had to split her math in two because she would get so upset when she would get a problem wrong. This year we switched to math with confidence and I didn’t have to print it praise God! We are printing tgtb language arts so thanks for the tip before I print. I’ll check out this math you recommend too!

So I had similar issues with my daughter who is a rising eighth grader in and out of different schools, trying different curriculums master books, so they’re in the beautiful. She always likes the new curriculum in the beginning but after the shininess wears off not so much last year midyear, Guy really started focusing on how many gaps she had, and how much she was struggling, I found LMS and showed it to her. She said she really liked the fact that it didn’t have all the fluff and didn’t care for the video lessons. She started from the very beginning and finished book one and started book 2 in six months, she’s halfway through book 2 for the start of her eighth grade year , she loves it and it begged me not to change to anything else. She’s getting good scores and her little sister, which is a rising fifth grader has also started book one and is halfway through it one caveat they do not teach time or money in LMF so I will be adding that in this year but definitely two thumbs up I’m glad you found it

We just started LMF with my 3rd, 7th, and 9th grader. My 9th grader was truckin along fine in Algebra 1 (MUS) but then hit a wall. I put it aside and started LMF vol 2 with him and vol 1 for my younger kids. Trying not to worry about my 9th grader “catching up” to “grade level”…I know he will and I’m trusting God with all of it. So far it’s been great.

I think that is awesome that you went backwards. I remember in high school my teachers were competing with who finishes the book first. It was awful. I had so many holes in my math because of it. I have an eight year old and I started all over again with LMF vol 1 this past January. We have filled many of those homes and I am actually getting that much better at mental math.
I completely relate about the screen temptation, I also told my boys I will need to have them use a typewriter if they don't focus! But it's because I let them type their answers out for their other subjects as I figured they'd type more, if they have to handwrite then I get the bare minimum answers. Seriously I think I may need to look into a typewriter..

Do your boys know HOW to type? I’ve neglected that also for her bc of the online aspect and I think she types similar to how she texts. Lol! But she doesn’t mind, I guess.

Is the Learn Math Fast System a supplemental program or a stand-alone curriculum?
That depends on the age of the student. An older student (12+) will get all the math they need to enroll in college level courses such as precalculus. However, topics such as telling time, the calendar, Roman numerals and tally marks are considered math, but are not taught in the Learn Math Fast System, so those topics will need to be supplemented. When teaching a younger student, we recommend using LMF every other day while teaching those four topics on the alternate days.

We finished up Pre-Algebra this past year with Learn Math Fast. We will be completing Algebra 1 with them this year. We will do one to two lessons a week.
That’s very encouraging! When I first began it, I didn’t even realize there were only about 50 lessons/book and I was thinking, “we should be getting through a lesson a day!!” But one a week is so much of a relief. Two is awesome!

I've been using this curriculum for a couple of years with my son because of , yes, you guessed it, math retention problems. He's ten, this has been working well to catch him up and really give him that solid foundation. I'll be interested to hear your feedback on how it works out on a high school level. Right now this is working so well for him I'm not about to change anything, lol.

Same. My hormonally ramped up pre teen has expressed she likes the feel of books so I might switch her to LMF (which I only learned about recently). We have been using TT and it’s been working really well for us. My son loves TT but I am curious about trying CTC math for him. He’s also pretty good at math whereas my daughter takes a little longer to grasp things and to answer. Praying for us all on this thread to have a great homeschool year ❤🙏🏻

@@jamiehutchinson2501 I’ll be praying you find the right fit for each of them. We’ve never tried TT, but I do love CTC. There aren’t a lot of frills with it, but we do love the mastery aspect of it.
He did Saxon through third grade and loathed it, and it was frustrating because I could tell he had a mathematically inclined mind like his father. We switched to Singapore (Primary) and he rocked it! We did that through 6th grade and then switched CTC. He’s doing really well with it. 😌
My daughter didn’t do well with Saxon either and so we tried Singapore Primary and it was a no go. Then we did the video teaching with Singapore Dimensions. She did well, but it just seemed to drag on for her. She’s doing well with the review I have her working on with CTC, so I’m going to give it another 3-4 weeks before I make a final decision on where to go this coming school year regarding her math. However, I’m definitely looking into LMF!
One more thing, the customer service for CTC is stellar. They are always ready to help problem solve if need be and answer any questions you may have! 😊
The mic drop 😂 ... We started LMF this year with my 15 yo. She HATES math but seemed to enjoyed it the simplicity to the program. We began at book one and didn't really follow the suggestions. She completed 5 books this past year, doing only lesson a day, repeating lessons as needed. Good Luck.

I quite literally came across this only a couple of months ago, and there weren't that many reviews. My 14 year old has quite literally struggled through math. We are only through half of his pre-algebra and frankly, I am not confident that he understands. I've only ordered the first two books, and I am anxiously awaiting them in the mail. We start school the beginning of august after only 4 weeks of break because we school all year with frequent breaks during the year. I'm sincerely hoping this works.

I am now so intrigued!!! 😂 I did master books first with my kids but it seemed like so much busy work. Then I went to TT with my 2 older ones and life of Fred with my youngest. My youngest seemed to be learning what Fred was teaching but it wasn’t really solidifying some things (huge gaps in basics, but understood some algebra concepts). It was weird what he knew and didn’t know. So moved him to TT. But now I feel like after a year they all still have quite a bit of gaps. I was thinking TGATB but I have to pull them back about a grade and it will take so much time to hit all the things that are gapped. So this seems like a very interesting homeschool secret. ❤
Some have told me that TGATB math is advanced. It’s hard to tell sometimes with these curriculums. What’s really behind? After seeing that Learn math fast is only 7 books….kind of makes you wonder.

I just want them to get what they need for life and possibly college or trade school or whatever their plans become for an adult. In TT he is in 3rd. But TT seems kind of simple for 3rd. But also, they don’t really dig into understanding multiplication and division. I did Saxon growing up and was planning on moving over to Saxon or shoreman. But now…
My oldest struggles with math a bit and I did get this, but for some reason we set it down… we tried simply math, and he did pretty well with Math Mammoth. But it’s the making change, and bigger mental math things that get him. So maybe I’ll go back to this. This year I’ll have 1st grade, 3rd grade and 6th grade. My 3rd and 6th graders are basically at the same level for math now.
So… maybe I’ll have to pull this back out!

This video reminded me of it, because you buy the curriculum once and it covers everything you need. You can go at your own pace and use it from the beginning, or to catch up, etc. I know it definitely would have been at the top of my list to try if I had heard about it earlier. I could definitely see you doing a great in depth review of it. That I would watch and live vicariously through you 😆.

We decided not to use it because it is not spiritual and both of my girls are dyslexic and really need a consistent reminder of what was just learned. We have turned Fridays into math games day after watching some of your videos about incorporating games. Hi Rachel! I love your videos, you are so helpful and entertaining. I have been watching avidly as you chronicle your journey with your daughter who has ADHD superpowers. I too have the ADHD and so does my teen. I often laugh out loud as you lament behavior as I have done the same things myself or have seen my child do them!! I think I can finally offer you some concrete help because math is a big deal in our homeschool, too. Firstly, your daughter does NOT have a retention problem. She has a retrieval problem. All of the information you have taught her is still in there. It is very challenging for us with ADHD to bring back information because we misfile skills. (we misfile everything, really) You were originally correct when you thought about switching to a spiral. The problem is that Teaching Textbooks and The Good and the Beautiful are not actual spirals. They do touch on topics over and over, but a true spiral will teach elements of a skill then spiral that element into different concepts. A true spiral is great for us with ADHD because it
teaches us to file information in different places and then we are more easily able to recall it. "No bells and whistles" is also great for us. Teaching Textbooks is a great curriculum, but not for those of us easily distracted. Learn Math Fast will be okay until it reaches new concepts. You will continue to see "retention" issues because conceptual learning is just one method of recall. As a former educator who now consults with families to find curriculum I honestly recommend you move to Saxon 8/7. If you want help teaching, you will find Nicole the Math Lady or My Math Assistant do a good job. I would advise that you skip the timed tests altogether. Individuals with ADHD and timed tests is a recipe for disaster. Can we do it, yes. Does it cause a level of anxiety that isn't worth the end product? In the opinion of many, absolutely. People with ADHD have struggles with recall and that is not compatible with timed tests. I predict that she struggles remembering facts even after studying. I also recommend that you do math for 45 minutes to an hour and don't worry about what lessons are completed. Some days it will just take longer. Attention is fickle and dopamine runs differently from day to day. My teen used to struggle with math, now I see a confidence I have always wished for. I agree with you that your daughter is bright in math. Once we are able to file and recall information reliably we are able to manipulate it in ways others cant. This is why I call ADHD a superpower. You will find your daughter is really good at the higher level math because she will be better able to recognize patterns and systems compared to most students. Do yourself a favor and check out Saxon (the homeschool version). It appears dry, the problems are tedious (to some) but the method is pure gold. If you want more tips and tricks to make Saxon a happy addition to your homeschool, hit me up. I absolutely love talking about curriculum and how to make it work for each individual. Thanks for all the tips! I’ve used saxon before with my son. Ugh….I really dislike Saxon. My daughter hates learning from videos. Everytime I’ve tried that, she doesn’t like sitting there. While I’ve heard good things about Nicole the Math Lady, I’d be hesitant to go that route bc it’s video.
Recall Vs retention….that’s interesting. My daughter does great when I do the math drills that are times if I offer her a reward.
I definitely see what you mean as a super power. She is a deeper thinker and already is very observant in patterns of behavior with people. She can ready people pretty well! 😂 that’s encouraging that you think she’ll do better in higher level math. Very hopeful for that!

Does recall have something to do with processing? I have a formally diagnosed 11 year old. He has dyslexia, ADHD non attentive, processing speed and short term working memory problems. He cannot do anything video based. He’s half way through Saxon 6/5 and I teach the lesson to him. Also, no time drills. It’s as if as soon as he sees the timer, his brain stops working. Otherwise he does okay-ish with retrieval. Some days are better than others of course.
Math 45 minutes to an hour for an ADHD student. Seriously! The average attention span for a 14 year old is 28 to 40 minutes. When they have ADHD its cut in half.
@@ReiverGrad14 the average attention span for an adult is 30 minutes (+ or -) according to the research done by Francesco Cirilo in the book The Pomodoro Technique let alone the attention span of a teen and with ADHD at that. I feel like my 11 year old’s attention span is way less than 5 minutes.
@@bestlandhomeschool recall is related to processing. Look at learning math as you would weight training. Practice everyday and make sure you hit all the muscle groups in a week. You want your muscles to stay flexible and ready for exercise.
I just started one of mine on the free TT trial.😬 she's good at math but loves video games and benefits from quick feedback... so that's why I chose to give TT a try. I also have 3 teens and 3 under 10 including 2 under 2. I'm feeling stretched thin!

Edition and while I like it, i am only in 1B 😅 so not super far along at all (we did dimensions K). I am wondering specifically what didn't work for you for Singapore? I know everyone is different but I don't want to get to 5B and wish I had done something different like learn math fast. I also have 4 other kids who are younger. Do you think learn math fast would be good for kids to start out with? The only reviews of learn math fast are of people switching in middle school to it and loving how it filled in holes and such but is it a good curriculum to start with? Thanks so much! ❤
Singapore is advanced. One of the mistakes I made with it was worrying about which level we were on and if we were behind. I don’t worry about that now. Once you complete level 6, you’ll be ready for algebra (that’s my understanding)
It starts getting into pre algebra in level 5. That’s where my son started struggling but he was only 7th grade and I thought he was behind so we switched to Saxon. If I had realized it wasn’t the grade level, we would’ve just taken our time. (Same mistake with my middle child…..I was worried about grade level. Now I know better.)
So with my youngest, once we get to long division in LMF, I will start adding Singapore back on and LMF will supplement her.
They do recommend that early years only use LMF as a supplement bc there are some things it doesn’t teach….telling time is one of them. (Their FAQ says this).
So I definitely think you could use it as a supplement. But they don’t recommend it being your core curriculum for the early years. 😉
I can’t imagine the lack of attention at that age. I’m dealing with it at now the 4th grade level. I’ve used ACE, Abeka, and going to try Good and the Beautiful with the books purchased, and Shell Education. Hopefully one of these will click the best. Oh he has ADHD also, so I can empathize with you.

So I’m doing math, language arts for sure. That’s always the priority (as well as Bible). We do science and history loosely through read alouds, nature walks/hikes, and also participating with my high schooler’s science experiments. Also joining a co-op which will take care of some science.
I’m a firm believer in reading, writing, and arithmetic as the priority at this age. And interest led for everything else. But our lifestyle is that we touch on everything else all the time. We just don’t realize it sometimes. 😉

I chose Denison for my ninth grader because it seems they really have the student in mind, especially if your particular student isn’t advanced. I think LMF will be a great supplement (not that one is needed.)
I’m the one who recommended Rays For Today. We switched (from Rays) because of the fact I’ll have four students next year, a toddler and baby. The program is solid, but currently is only finished up to level 6, which is advanced in my opinion. The curriculum was developed from the original Rays Arithmetic, that came out in the mid 1800’s, for the modern student. The method is tried and true.

Try getting a word processor that can connect to your computer when you need to print. It’s how my son and I stay focused with writing. He even learned his typing with it with a paper based lesson.

Did you ever try times tales for multiplication. My grandson with adhd would memorize math facts and then forget over the summer. For some reason it was a real struggle. I picked up a cd at a garage sale called Times Tales. It is mnemonics for grades 3 thru 5. They said learn in one hour and thats exactly how long it took. Im so blown away that he knows them all in literally 1 hour.
We didn’t. But when we did classical conversations, they learned to skip count to song. My girls still know most of those songs. They are very helpful!!!
I'd love an update on if this is still working for your kids :) Currently pulling my hair out teaching long division (with many, MANY tears) and trying to figure out what I need to do 🤪
I am going to give an update probably on the spring. But it’s definitely working the way I want it to. My daughters are gaining confidence in their math skills. And we’re pausing on lessons that we need to practice more and working on speed and accuracy.
We’re actually getting close to the long division lesson! I think we’re only a few away.

I think that depends on the age of the child. I’m using it for my high schooler to fill in the gaps. He’s going through it super fast (he’s already completed 3 books in a semester. But for my middle schooler, I’m using it as a stand alone to see what she needs to work on. And then I might pause and find her more practice when those issues present themselves.
But if you have a very young child, they don’t recommend this as a stand alone bc it doesn’t seem SOME concepts like telling time.
I know people who use it both ways.
So far I have tried the same as you with adhd child same experience. I am trying right start now.

We did get rather far and it did work. And it finally clicked with my child what I meant about making 10! But I feel like we’re a little behind now. I dunno for sure. Gonna look over our progress now! See how I feel about it. If we finish book 1. Thanks!
The curriculum does recommend supplementing it for younger kids rather than making it your sole curriculum. Do you think maybe that’s it?
When I read that, I thought once we get to long division, I think I’m going to move my 4th grader back to Singapore and she can do both if she wants.
Good point. I did it use it solely and feel that set her back a little. But she couldn’t remember basic addition facts. Gonna try to catch-up this year! 😁
@@ambers4524 if she still struggles with adding, look at addition the fun way books!! They are the adding facts in story form. For some kids, that works so much better!! I read those books to my girls when they’re were younger and they loved the stories anyway! 😜
I can relate on SO MANY LEVELS! We did all the things as well. My daughter actually didn’t like TT- she felt that it didn’t give enough detailed explanation.
We used TG&TB for several years but getting into those higher levels, every lesson has SO. MANY. PROBLEMS. Also my daughter cannot hang with video lessons. She also has ADHD and for some reason they just don’t keep her attention. She found herself getting frustrated when the videos went too slow, and then feeling lost when they went too fast. 🤦🏽♀️
We’ve used LMF a few times but my daughter just didn’t like it. She didn’t resonate with the way the concepts were explained, even though I thought it was great.
At this point, we’ve landed on Masterbooks. I really don’t love MB (for a bunch of reasons) but what matters to my daughter is that it is math she can do, and yet it says “Level 6” on the cover. We don’t read any of the stories, we just do the math. And even if it’s hard- it’s only two pages a day. That makes a difference to her.
That being said, I still reference LMF for explaining some concepts , so I’m glad we have it.
After this year, I’m going to try Dennison Pre Algebra. It is specifically designed for kids who have struggled in math. It does have video lessons, but they are much more methodical and to the point.

You’re not the only one I know who’sADHD child has done well with Masterbooks! So sometimes you’ve gotta just stick with what works for them. If it’s minimizing “attitude,” that’s a win!!
We are going to start Denison pre-algebra this year with my ADD daughter. I am going to let her adjust the speed of the video to 1.25x to keep her brain engaged. This really helps with a lot of other videos, so hopefully it will work. She's generally not crazy about video lessons, but Denison is so perfect in every other way!

That totally makes sense- she is constantly listening to audiobooks at 1.5x speed.
@@Gameroomschoolhouse I've found that some people just talk too darn slow. ;) I am just going to be sure and tell her that if she needs to pause or rewatch anything to really get it, then she needs to buckle down and do it. As long as she gets the concepts, I have no problem with her listening at a faster speed - I get better cooperation for sure.

We have tried this for my daughter with dyscalculia. Really didn’t like it as our main curriculum, too much drill and kill. We use it to supplement but she is really happy with Mr. D Math, the live online classes.
I’ve heard about that math also!!! There are so many great options!
One thing I did take away from our math journey, I think a mastery approach is better for our adhd kids. My daughter has done so well with Mr. D and I think it is because they only focus on one issue at a time. I realized after a bit most of our fails were with spiral curriculum. It doesn’t matter how tight or loose that spiral is, for her it was simply too much to remember at one time. Thankfully Mr. D has a small amount of spiral mixed in, they review from all the previous chapters about twice weekly.

Drill and kill? There are just a few problems to work out…we thought it was cut and dry.

For your daughter, did you start at Book 1? How did she take it? My 9th grade daughter (also has ADHD) is doing TT and she is literally retaining nothing. I have seen LMF recommended so many times for those that struggle. However, having her start at Book 1 would make her extremely upset. She knows she struggles and is slower, but still wants to be on "grade level" because if she's not, she thinks she's stupid - it seems like there is nothing I can do to change that mindset. I'm wondering if starting in the Pre-Algebra book would be enough - not too far behind, but still learning similar concepts. Also - I LOVE your videos! They are extremely helpful and entertaining at the same time! 🙂

My daughter wasn’t upset to start at book 1. I think she enjoyed the ease! 😬 but you don’t have to if you don’t think yours needs help reinforcing speed. You couldn always just do speed drills separately.
I will say that book 1 is all about adding and subtracting, multiplying and dividing but NOT JUST the basic facts. It has long division, adding and multiplying decimals…. Multiplying 3 digit numbers by 3 digit numbers.
When I had my son go through these books, he also wasn’t upset to go back. I told him to do three lessons a day or timebox his math. (So 3 lessons or an hour - whichever came first.) the first book only has about 50 lessons. So if she did more than 1 a day, it would take about a month. So you could tell her that. It’s not like book 1 has to take all year.
So because you are doing this with all your kids, did you have to buy their individual books or can you buy one set and all the work is done in a regular notebook?
I see the money page that its American, after looking through the books do you think this curriculum would be an issue for Canadians?
I’m just making copies of my kids are in the same book. So I’m not buying extra books, but you could bc they’re inexpensive.
Are you talking about the math unit for counting money? I’m not sure. You could email the company and ask them. My experience so far with this curriculum is that the lessons are very short so I’m sure you could interchange with Canadians money and use the same concepts. As far as the Pennie’s used in the first few lessons, they are just simply used as counters. So you could use anything. Even buttons would work.
Just curious, if you use this curriculum with your 11th grade student, what will you call that on his high school transcript, general math?

If I were doing this for credits, this goes through Alg 1, Alg 2, and geometry so those are the transcript subjects I put. The last 3-4 books are listed that way also.
But for us, I don’t have to put anything on his transcript. He’s already got 3 math credits. If he gets through it all with success, then I can change his Alg 2 grade from a B to an A bc he will have improved. But mainly, I’m having him do this to improve his ACT math score and keep his skills fresh for college level math should he go that route
