To the people whose argument is just "CinemaSins is satire" and leave it at that, may I present a counterpoint:
Comedy/ Satire (like any other form of art) CAN be criticized. You can defend it as satire all you want, but that doesn't mean it's good satire. If bad satire is your thing, that's okay and more power to you, but stop saying "it's satire" as if it shields Jeremy and CinemaSins from criticism

    • @Th3Birdman
      @Th3Birdman  4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

Lol that's a pretty big compliment. I actually say it every single time I record a new video, and I record the line MANY, MANY times in order to get the inflection right and consistent with the other lines.
I've been adjusting my microphone settings, so the sound wouldn't match the rest of my voiceover if I didn't record the line every single time I record for a video. There's actually two versions of the line, where I flip the usage of the word "movie" for "film". That should settle it lol..

In addition to your points, a woman dressing up and trying to look attractive to get men's attention isn't something this movie made up, this was actually a huge part of the culture the movie attempts to portray at the time it's portraying. A movie isn't sexist for honestly depicting a historical era. Beyond that, there is your point, that if someone wants to get the attention of men by looking attractive, they're perfectly entitled to, and pretending they're not is more oppressive than the thing feminism is supposed to be fighting.
As for sending women to fight, this was more a cultural thing than a logical one, although it roots from a logical point. Basically if you have a ton of women get killed your population is going to have a much more difficult time bouncing back than if a bunch of men got killed.
In terms of how effective women can be, weapons already were an equalizer on battlefields for a long time. Upper body strength and average bone density don't matter very much with a sword or spear. It doesn't take much force to cause fatal damage with a weapon, especially with bladed weapons, and most blocking techniques with those weapons tend to be parries or redirects rather than static blocks that would require a lot of strength. Grappling range might be a problem, but if you're using a 6 foot long polearm and someone gets into grappling range with you, you've likely already lost that fight quite some time ago. Not to mention that there were grappling techniques that existed around that time that could help compensate for the size disparity. There were also cultures that had women train with weapons in order to help guard properties and estates while the armies were away, however it was extremely rare that they had any part in actual battles.

Mulan's motivation to join the army was not about exploring the world and not conforming to societal expectations. It was to protect her father from having to fight in a war he'd surely die in because he was no longer physically capable. She chose to return home because she had brought honor to her family, which she LOVED - a love that drove her to risk her own life. By doing so, she both had to continue to pretend to be someone she wasn't, but also got to experience a life other than the one originally expected of her. She returned because she MISSED HER FAMILY.

  • @Sir_Gwan

Technically speaking, you could "swim" out of an avalanche (you would die but hush we don't talk about that). Wet and dry snow avalanches are basically just shifting snow in either water logged sludgy form or dry powder snow form. A third type is slab snow avalanches which is when entire chunks of large solid ice and snow start a domino effect of sliding down and, well, causing an avalanche. Slab snow is most likely what the avalanche in the movie is and it is the deadliest considering it's giant ice chunks rolling down.
Tl;dr basically, let's say you had the durability and strength to escape an avalanche, then technically speaking you could Aquaman style "swim" out of it depending on the type of avalanche. I could always be wrong so if anyone wishes to correct me go ahead, I'm merely saying the stuff I know about the topic and relating it to something I saw in the video

Bonus sin for Jeremy not realizing that Mulan likely decided to go back home because she did accomplish her goal of showing the world who she really is and saving her father from being sent to (likely) die in battle. She saved the Emperor's life for crying out loud, that's the sort of thing that gets people talking and for sure a few songs written about you and most definitely shows the world that you're not just some lazy farm girl

Mulan didn't go to war to show who she really was, she wanted to protect her father. And she didn't go home to conform to society, but she wanted to see her family again. Also it's not like she was homosexual and had a problem with having a man, she just wasn't good at the traditional feminine role. (not a critique against you but cinema sins)

Sin 69: Also this was a REAL historical thing done in China. Fire pits were a much faster way of sending signals to armies across the many miles of the Great Wall than it would have been done on foot.
Sin 74: I wouldn't say Mulan was lazy. She was running late for her matchmaker appointment.
Sin 75: It's called "Exaggerated proportions" and it's used all the time in cartoons.
Sin 77: As a comment said somewhere down here, satire can also be criticized. It's not just an immediate thing invulnerable to all forms of criticism.
Sin 78: Wait...did he say Wumplestilksen or did he mean Rumplestilksen?
Sin 79: The thing about this song, as least how I interpreted it, is that it's based on "traditional" ways of being appealling to men, which for the most part was how things were done in China at the time. Mulan is more of a tomboy, hence why the song doesn't fully resonate with her as she doesn't really see herself in these fancy garments and makeup.
Sin 104: Also (and I might be wrong because it's been a while since I last saw this movie), I don't think she's sleeping. She's sitting out in the rain and crying.
Sin 106: Also, as far as I'm aware, this is one of the scenes that made this movie disliked in China. From my understanding, the Chinese have a very different view of death and the afterlife compared to the West, and bickering ghosts played mostly for laughs is PROBABLY not how the Chinese view their ancestors.
Sin 107: Also in this very shot, you can clearly see an ancestor that's relatively younger compared to all the others, meaning most likely that ancestor died young while the others died of old age.
Sin 108: Also that's NOT an eagle. That's a falcon.
Sin 127: Also, this is ancient China. Traditionally, girls were not allowed to fight in the army at the time. I'm not sure if the penalty for a woman being in the army was death, but I'm pretty sure it was still heavily discouraged anyway.
Sin 129: Also, Jeremy is completely missing the fact that the punching and slapping were NOT the correct thing to do as it immediately starts a brawl.
Sin 131: Wait...did Jeremy think Shang meant he will LITERALLY make a man out of Mulan? I hope not, because that's just...wow. That's dumb.
Sin 132: Basically, during the song sequence, Mulan is struggling with all of the training, and fearing that all that failure may result in the army discovering she is a girl, Mushu cheats so that she can pass. It's only later in the song when Mulan finally gains the confidence to actually pull through on her training and end up being one of the toughest in the army.
Sin 135: A comment answered this about the periods: Women don't have periods during periods of high stress or excercise. As for the "hygiene" thing, she's taking a bath in a lake by the camp, and I don't know about you ladies, but I think it's MUCH harder to hide the fact you're a girl when completely naked.
Sin 138: Besides, just because they aren't crying doesn't mean they aren't sad. There are different ways of showing sadness other than crying. Even a simple bowed head and silence works.
Sin 142: Also, doing a swimming motion when in avalanche is like avalanche survival 101. I'm not so sure about the horse part, but you CAN swim on an avalanche.
Sin 149: Mulan's ENTIRE reasoning for joining the army was NOT because she wanted to prove herself. It was 100% motivated by the love for her family. She joined the army as a replacement for her father, who was an old man that could barely stand with his sword. Of course she would be satisfied with going back home to her family once everything was done!

Mulan handled its feminism message quite well, dispite coming out almost two decades before the main tidal wave hit.
I like how it stated that women can still be badass without losing their ladylike properties (the whole thing that makes them special), rather than essentially turning them into a badass with boobs and whimp-efying everyone else; which is a plot device I have seen too many times in this day and age.

The fact that some of the women “willfully subscribe” to it doesn’t mean it’s not sexism. Go back to 1900, and you’ll find women who teach their daughters that women shouldn’t vote or make important decisions, because it’s not their place/unnatural and that things are better if they just behave and let the men do it, because they’re “better suited” for it. These women are willfully subscribing to this idea, and that literally has no effect on if it’s sexist or not. Obviously these ideas are sexist, these women have simply been taught that they are true.

They have a tendency to overexplain things like the audience is so stupid they needed to be spoonfed whatever information they need.

They are a tiny platoon of newbies who dream of being heroic and all, and then they see the entire main army, a fighting force both more experienced and larger than theirs, being annihilated. And now they have to go and face the enemy that wiped out the people they were aspiring to become. This is NOT a sad event. This is horrifying, and you can see it in their stricken silence.
The only one who has a reason to be sad is Shang as his father died - and you can see a brief moment of grief he allows himself before he has to perform his duties as a general.

This is also a pretty blatant example of casual racism were the writers and Jeremy don't care about cultural context and history like in Moana for example and view things from a white american perspective. Mulan isn't exactly 100% accurate obviously but most of the problems he has is due to the time period and country this movie takes place in. And they claim to care about minorities...

But I think there are other weak points like the desert areas or the part that goes into the ocean but I think that the wall was shorter in the mountains and the bad weather hindered the watching of it in the mountains also bad visibility.

    Movie: set in Ancient China
    Jeremy: SEXISM! BODY SHAMING! SIN!!!
I mean seriously what the fuck? Even putting aside the fact that current China is more patriarchal and misogynistic than the current West, expecting people thousand of years in the past to act in accordance with modern (Western) feminism and social justice is insane. Showing those things doesn't mean filmmakers support sexism, it just means they are telling a story in which it has an effect. You don't expect WW2 movies not to show Nazis being racist and genociding Jews because that is disgusting and wrong do you? No, you have to accept that Nazis existed and were evil and a film portraying that doesn't mean it supports it.
