Jeff, let me first say I’ve caught hundreds of tarpon over the decades. I noticed that much of the time when the tarpon are running and pulling drag, you are pointing the rod tip at the fish. This is a bad habit. You really need to put as much bend in the rod as possible, so when they jump, you can react quickly by giving them as much slack as you can. Tarpon shake their heads more than any other fish and when done on a tight line…snap! Or the hook pulls (most likely). Make the tarpon beat the bend in the rod, not just the drag and I think you’ll land them quicker and land a higher percentage of fish in the long run. I really enjoy your videos. Keep them coming! Jimmy.
@@jpinkerman thanks Jimmy. Yeah watching the whole 2 hour video I could have done more to pressure the fish early on. After the initial few jumps where I let it run. I did put a lot of pressure on him. What you see is only 10 min of a two hour fight. Given the 60 lb leader broke at the boat not sure I would have boated it with more pressure. Was a good season. Learned a lot. Till next May.
Thanks for watching. September October for downtown Jacksonville. However tarpon are in the river from June thru October when water temps reach 80 or so.
What a fight. Great work surviving the obstacles.
Thanks for watching.
Nice!

Wow incredible skill getting off those crab traps. That fish seemed to know every trick in the book and you still got him. Great video
@@drewtyler6105 had a lot of practice in Ft Myers. I didn’t mention my trolling motor 60 amp fuse tripped in the last 15 min of the fight.
@@JeffBattleFish damn that must've been stressful
Hey Jeff At Battlefish some of the best tarpon content on TH-cam
Thanks Aaron.
What website did you get the gomexus knob for your salt x?
I’m sorry but I don’t remember where I got it. It’s modified to fit though. Thanks for watching.
How are you timing those mullet runs?
Thanks for watching. September October for downtown Jacksonville. However tarpon are in the river from June thru October when water temps reach 80 or so.
@ hey thanks for the reply I live downtown and have been dreaming of getting on a tarpon. Good to know when and where they're at 👍🏽
They were thick from Nemours to River Oaks park in San Marco. From the seawalls out to 15’ deep.
How much do you think it weighed?
Probably 100. Thanks for watching.
Good video
Thanks for watching.
Have you tried using steel leader? It slips into their mouths easier and allows better hook sets with artifical. Only works in dark water
If it breaks you off then the fish has steel leader jewelry
Thanks for watching. No. I don’t steel leader except for kingfish. Tarpon would never bite steel leader. Even 80 lb mono scares them.
@@JeffBattleFishdang ok I’ve seen it work on tarpon in st Aug so I thought maybe St. John’s tarpon would be similar. Keep on em!
@@shu9489thanks. The other problem with steel is if you want to break it you can’t. Mono or Fluoro you can pop it.
How’d you make your livescope mount? I’m about to install on our boat but man those premade mounts are expensive and flimsy
@@sicksecbeamer millennium marine mount. 27” height. About $200. Worth it. It’s held up well so far. I lower it when running in chop.
