    This animation for Wings was created by Nikki Pet, and draws inspiration from comments made by Joan Tower on her composition process for this piece. In a 2021 interview (www.novaslc.org/novapodcast/n..., Tower mentions changing the title from "Panthers," to "Falcons," before eventually settling on "Wings." As a result, most of the birds featured are based on falcons and other birds of prey, and the opening shifts of color are designed as an abstraction of the smooth and subtle movements of panthers.
    Additionally, the nest-like structure that appears throughout the animation is generated by NCBot, a network mapping program designed by Kaitlin Pet, and is a graphical representation of the notes and structure of the piece. Each dot represents a note, and adjacent notes in the music are connected by arcs of varying sizes. The thickness of the arc is determined by the frequency that interval appears--thicker arcs occur between pairs of notes that occur many times, whereas thinner arcs represent pairs of notes that only appear once or twice.
