    My grandfather fought from Normandy to Aachen, where he was severely wounded. He said he took no pleasure in fighting conscripted Germans, but he did especially enjoy fighting SS soldiers. He carried a BAR, so I’d like to think he took quite a toll, though he never talked about anything like that with us. He always lamented that the 30th Infantry didn’t get the recognition they deserved for breaking the deadlock in the hedgerows of Normandy or holding Mortain while severely outnumbered and outgunned.

    I, as a native German (and having a great grand father with some very bad live choices, to phrase it mondainly) would like to call out that the pronounciation is "Shoots Staffel" (for English speakers) i.e. in German "Schutz Staffel" wich is vaguely translated into "security squadron", "protection unit" or something similar. You will also find sources that refer to them as "Saal Schutz" wich means something like "hall guardiance".

    Additional Waffen-SS units were added from the Ukrainians, Albanians from Kosovo, Serbians, Croatians, Turkic, Caucasians, Cossack, and Tatars. The Ukrainians and Tatars, who had suffered persecution under Stalin, were likely motivated primarily by opposition to the Soviet government rather than ideological agreement with the SS.
    The Indian Legion was a Wehrmacht unit formed in August 1942 chiefly from disaffected Indian soldiers of the British Indian Army captured in the North African Campaign.

      I don’t agree with “Serbs” and “Croats”. There were 220 Serbs total, mostly ethnic Germans or at least German origin, but not in a separate unit, they were in the 7. SS Gebirgs Division “Prinz Eugen”. Croats had their own units as part of the NDH. What is sometimes wrongly perceived, though the 13. SS Gebirgs Division “Handschar” wore the croat “Šahovnica” (red white chequerboard) arm shield on the left upper sleeve (below the arm eagle), those people were not Croats.
      Those were ethnic Bosnian Muslims (Croats were mainly Roman Catholic) but since there was no Bosnia (and Herzegovina) back then, they wore Croat insignia and were also, somewhat misleadingly, referred to as “Kroatische Nr. 1”.
      Also, as far as I know the Cossacks in the German Army were all part of the Wehrmacht (the so called Wlassow Kosaken). I don’t know of any Cossacks in the SS. There was only one cavalry division in the SS, the 8. SS Kavallerie Division “Florian Geyer” (commanded by Hermann Fegelein…). It’s not impossible that there might have been single Cossacks there, but I doubt it. If you know more I’d love to see pics of confirmed Cossacks wearing SS uniform.

    Ideological indoctrination and normalisation of violence are necessary parts of such extremist groups, but few have really perfected the entire sick process like the SS. You can see very similar group-building around the world in the last few decades too; bonding a group of people within an authoritarian ideological framework that justifies horrific acts such as mass-murder, terrorism and/or rape, with immense peer pressure for every group member to contribute to these activities.
    They can develop across a wide variation of cultures and religions, but they maintain the same commonalities and tendencies for oppression, violence, and wiping out undesirables, whether they are extremist Muslim military groups in the Middle East or extremist Christian militia groups in America (like the KKK). Although in truth, any actual religious focus is just a mutated component of their core ideology, and will always involve twisting scripture to suit their ideals - sometimes in completely ridiculous ways that contradict the actual religion.

The episode’s concept of a purely evil SS officer visiting Dachau after the war to soak in his power, only then to be judged with crimes against humanity by the spirits of his victims who died in his camp with his punishment being insanity, sinks in more with additional historical context.

    • @dark2023-1lovesoni
      @dark2023-1lovesoni ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Plenty of them developed serious drug habits. They issued methamphetamine regularly to troops. Hitler even got daily injections of it. They also invented most "modern" opioids (oxy/hydro-codone and oxy/hydromorphone). Herman Goring was carrying over 20,000 tablets of dihydrocodeine (an opioid) in a suitcase when captured, according to his own testimony he took 40 tablets a day to "stave off morphine withdrawal". There's a book called 'Blitzed' on the topic of rampant drug abuse by Nazi party officers and the ridiculous over prescribing of mind-altering drugs to their troops.

      A lot of them did. The Nazis were famous for "doping" their troops. Methamphetamine, for example, was often given to troops on the front lines, especially to pilots.
      Not that Germany was the only country to do so - drugs and war have gone hand-in-hand for a very long time. It is very easy to fall into addiction when experiencing the horrors of war. People just want to feel numb. And it's especially easy if the drugs are provided by the government - whether it be cannabis, amphetamines, opiates, tobacco, or alcohol.

The Nazis stole our faith and bastardized it all to hell while really not giving a damn about the faith itself except for its own utterly fucked up purposes, ones that truly have nothing to do with Norse Heathenry, whatsoever! There's as much in Nazi Germany that's Norse Heathen as there is in a typical Bible study group! By the time the Nazis got a hold of the Runes, the meanings they attached to them had nothing to do with their actual meanings, whatsoever! Especially when you consider that Sowilo is the rune for victory, and the Nazis became the laughing stock of the world the way they damned well deserved to be, there's absolutely nothing about them that screams "victory," whatsoever! So yeah, those two bastardized symbols that that Nazi scum wore on their uniforms? They're lightening bolts, not runes!

    I always found it fascinating that Stennes not only survived his attempted coup but was also allowed to emigrate to China and then served as a military advisor to Chiang Kai-shek's Kuomintang until 1949. One wonders how American Generals Stillwell and Chennault felt dealing with an ex-Nazi.

    The hints at Nazi propaganda are fucking scary. The online right has seen an incredible turn towards fascist thinking, so it’s bonechilling how contemporary the statements on masculinity sound. These are the moments where I hope that I am reading too much into things, but it doesn’t help how crazy the American right has gotten ever since their failed coup- which doesnt sound too dissimilar to some german political party

      The entire leadership was about as un-aryan as you could imagine. Goebbels? Barely looks human. Himmler was small, Goering massively obese and addicted to morphine and Schnitzel, almost none of them even blonde. Must've been awkward at times, every SS man towering over Hitler and the others. Probably selected smaller SS guys for Hitlers guard to make him look at least not short.

    I wonder if the Natzi party didn't waste time chasing after trivial things like, whether a uniform was made by a Jewish person? Would they have been able to win against the Russians because they made winter clothing to deal with the harsh conditions of winter? According to the Natzi history that I heard, they were all over the place, worried about things that didn't matter and destroyed them in the long run. Maybe they should have concentrated on whether they had enough fuel to continue a war on many fronts.
