I haven’t owned any Ernie Ball MM guitars yet, but I’ve built several Warmoth custom Strats with stainless steel jumbo frets, roasted maple neck, crazy cool sparkle finishes and all black hardware. They craft the body and neck, and everything else is left up to me which is perfect. I’m not the best luthier or finish guy, I just don’t have the facilities for all that so I leave it to the experts, and my guitars are very similar to the Music Man stuff, beautiful, fast, modern rock machines.

I just had a HORRIBLE experience with Sweetwater's "Custom shop" -- I sent in my PRS Custom 24, which has very small sized / vintage sized frets that have been worn down and leveled quite a bit since I first purchased the guitar in 2012, that I wished to have changed for more modern jumbo sized stainless frets.
I chatted with the custom shop guy about it before I sent it in, we went over everything and then I shipped it to them.
They received it this week, and immediately started giving me the runaround.
First they tried to claim that the frets used by PRS stock are "just as good as stainless steel" -- this isn't true. They're not. They're Jescar NS (nickel silver).
They're certainly better than the old vintage nickel alloy frets that Fender and Gibson used in the 70s, but Jescar themselves make SS frets.
If they're just as good, why would Jescar themselves EVEN MAKE stainless steel wire? Lmao.
Next they told me that even though they're smaller sized frets, they're still "within PRS spec" -- I explained that I prefer a larger fret size for my playing, and I would still really like to have the frets upgraded.
Then they finally gave me the _real reason_ why they don't want to do it...which, talk about dishonesty.
There's a finish on the sides of the rosewood fingerboard, and their luthier isn't confident that he can do the work without chipping / damaging the side finish.
I should have caught this myself, so this is partially on me...I just didn't think it would be an issue, but damn...
They tell me this AFTER I sent the guitar into them and paid UPS $250 to ship it there.
And to make matters worse, I originally bought this exact guitar from them 10 years ago.
This is the last time I ever take the advice of a TH-camr.
Unfortunately though, living where I live in Buffalo NY, there aren't any other local options...just Guitar Center, which I imagine is even worse than Sweetwater.

@@5urg3x As a tech myself I’m honestly embarrassed that this is acceptable luthiery for most people. Almost all rosewood boards have lacquer on the sides, and maples boards are entirely lacquered. Absolutely NO luthier worth their salt would say they can refret rosewood boards, unless there is finish on the sides, clearly just an inexperienced tech. Pathetic. Im sure if you look hard enough you will find someone local and I urge you to, a refret in the states should cost you about $300 for stainless, if some company tells you it’ll be more they’re ripping you off

Why buy a custom guitar when you can fill your gas tank up....once😋.
Haa, Ernie Ball guitars, when I need a $7000 guitar after I win the lottery, I'll let you know. These guitar makers are out of their f**kin minds, but not as f**kin out of their minds as the customers that keep paying these STUPID prices. It's one thing if you're on tour and sponsored, it's another to steal a fair % of peoples salaries. I make six figures, and I'm not comfortable with these prices, WTF guitar makers?

That might be putting too sharp of a point onto it. Yes, there's obviously a certain advertising element to the sponsorship else it wouldn't be a monetization strategy. That doesn't mean you can't take it with a portion of salt and use it to inform your decisions/perspective.

That’s all the TH-cam guitar community is these days. Channels like Glenn Fricker’s are rare. It’s all people paying for advertisements and promotions and “demos” and not giving the whole story - we should call these people what they are, and that is basically no different than car salesman.
