I moved to Darlo in 2021 from Yorkshire and I love it. It's like everywhere, has some good and bad bits but overall it's a decent spot. Great vlog, if you ever come back I can show you some interesting bits you missed this time round.
This channel is my absolute favorite go to,I’ve had a few crap years and it cheers me up no end,you do so much for people with your content,I want to say thankyou to you and Helen and please never change xxx
@jojoynes4823 I can relate! I've spent the last 10 years caring for my Dad. He had Vascular Dementia and needed 24 hour care. He died in May. My head is still all over the place but like you, I watch an episode of By the Curb and I feel better! They are so relatable and refreshingly honest. I also feel like I've been on a journey with them (such a wanky phrase!!) But it's true! I remember when he had the old set-up, if you think how far he's come from there, it's fantastic! Jo - I hope your luck is changing for the better, and there are happy times ahead 😊✌
My mum would give me a note and some money and send me off on the 8 mile bus journey to that butchers.. Taylor’s pork pies are the best. That was 55 years ago and your vlog brought it all back. Great vlog 👌
Been to chatsworth so many times throughout my life ,it will always remind me of my parents especially sitting with a picnic in the gardens ,but last time I went was ridiculously expensive and way too commercial 😔
I mean c'mon, what other channel is going to take you hiking in Texas one day and then show you the splendour of the haberdashery section in boyes department store the next? If you want variety 'By the curb' has to be top of the list!
Hi James, we went to Chatsworth last weekend, cost £40 per person for the market, light trail and house tour, expensive. The food was really costly, a pasty £8, brisket and cheese in a bun £14.00! But it was packed and I thought money was tight. Plenty of barbour jackets and wellies (know what i mean) with hounds trailing along to trip you up. That's my rant!
I used to visit Darlington twice a year on business and stayed overnight. It is one of my favorite towns with great cafes, pubs and restaurants. Good to walk the town with you James.
Thanks once again for all your hard work in producing the vlogs, love the professionalism of the editing of your vlogs and look forward to seeing what you have planned for the future, new van and of course maybe that new house with Helen haha. Anyways take care and all the best, Peter.
We live in Darlo and I enjoyed, it was quiet in town that day but there’s not a lot of shops now so mainly a Saturday when busier. There’s some really nice bars and restaurants and especially lovely in summer. The boot and shoe is an experience on a weekend 😂
It got me teary this one - especially when you were in that pub with the DJ. It was touching to see people doing their bit to bring some cheer on a quiet afternoon. We’re all trying, and it’s so hard not to feel absolutely heartbroken about what the UK is dealing with. But here you are, keeping us connected with real communities, our history and heritage. For all of that, much respect to you James. Thank you 🙏🏾 💜 PS - if in the future you ever venture further north to Sunderland, there’s a mural of my great cousin, the footballer Raich Carter, on the side of the Blue House pub in Hendon, Sunderland.
I watched the sunday brunch episode, Bob was really enthusiastic about van life. You are in company with a national treasure. Be very proud. You deserve it 😅
The Ghanaian intrigued me.I spent a month in Accra and enjoyed myself to the limits of fun. I cannot ever forget the warm and fun loving tempo there, the carvings and skill of artisans, the gyrating night life with talented acrobats and dancers who could balance table eggs on their heads, the sexy statues, customs traditions and luscious food. It's a must for all adventurers! It's the best place I've ever been to.
You are so right about the costs of visiting tourist places of interest. My son was in London and really shocked by entry fees to places like the Tower so just visited museums. A french girl he met thought the prices were too much as well compared to Paris so did not go into them. I'm sure if they halved the fees they would get many more visitors.

George Stephenson (born in Wylam-on-Tyne) was Robert's dad, they are/wrre Geordies and these locomotives were invented and built in George Stephenson's engine works immediately behind Newcastle Central Station and taken down to Stockton for the trials on the rail lines run between Stockton and Darlington. Really liked the look of Darlington. I've never been either but it looks like heaven to me. I'm from York and it's all jostly jostly, pushy pushy in town at this time of year, most of the time actually. Looked like a breath of fresh air.
Mega: It's not usually that quiet in Darlo, but it's never as busy as York 😮 Wed is a halfday there and most surrounding offshoot towns, but I also think it was the cold that put ppl off, it was a very frosty night on Tues, so we all stayed home ⛄️
@@joline2730 Thanks joline. Had a look at property in Darlington earlier and it's half the price of York.... which makes it very attractive to me, looks a lot cleaner than York too, was impressed.
@@Megavector2022 Ah, now Property - you talk my language 🏠. Depends what u r after ... but actually the North East is pretty run down and certainly does not have the kudos York has . . . A 2bed miner's cottage in Darlo, if in fairly good condition will cost around £70k upwards, in very bad condition and needing full refurb then it's about £40k to £45k (don't pay more!). But every town has it's low end and high end, and in the "West End" area they are anything from £350,000 upwards to perhaps £900,000 ?? (maybe more, for a 3/4bedder.) If you live in York or outskirts then don't come up here unless you are skint - they don't increase in value that much.
@@joline2730 You would be suprised, a lot of the York indigenous population want to get out of here, no kudos, that's a bit of a myth and very clever marketing by the Council so they can charge higher rates. I live on the outskirts in a 3 bed, bit of a waste really as there's only me lives here. I guess the way forward for me is a bit more research and a drive up to assess the areas.
@@Megavector2022 I can give you ideas of good and bad areas, covering all of County Durham : GOOD: Durham City (expensive) or outskirts (cheaper) - it's a University Town so lots of Rentals. Gainsford, Spennymoor, Heighington, Whitby, Sedgefield, Middridge, Newton Aycliffe, Houghton Le Spring. BAD: Horden (the worst!), Peterlee, Shildon, Bishop Auckland, Close House, Coundon. I came up from London, but I spent TWO YEARS researching the whole of the county first! On R/move search the minimum price and you will get a good idea of what the areas are like. Bus services are generally good, but not a lot of work opportunities. Hope this helps 🙏
Can you believe EE have one of their major call centres here. It's near the brick train and the EE phone signal in Darlington is almost useless to none existent. You can't make this shit up.
This is exactly why I love your channel James and Helen. Decent, ordinary people (And fellow Yorkshire folk to boot😊) Regarding your Parents experience at Chatsworth House…That is absolutely disgusting. Yes they have to pay for the upkeep, but £25 for parking (even though your parents were only being dropped off!) on top of the money that people are spending on entrance fees, and more than likely food etc. The past few years I have been caring for my elderly parents (I lost my dad last year) so I totally understand your frustration/anger towards places like that, and it really hit a nerve with me. Anyhoo….keep up the great work that you’re doing, you truly deserve all the rewards that you are now reeping from your channel👍
Wow can’t believe Bob watches you - I did see an interview he loved the van life videos and turns out he’s been watching you the whole time. He’s great love it
I know that you felt that it was really boring walking around and not much going on. But you definitely let everyone see how lovely of a place Darlington is. Also, maybe because you were by yourself and you and Helen have been together the last few weeks.but thank you for sharing this vlog. Always following you guys, from Canada.🇨🇦
Loved the Neil Diamond karaoke. My dad used to gig at weekends back in the 70s / 80s, Neil Diamond was a big part of his repertoire. Also, I’m a Stephenson so enjoyed the railway and bridge content.
Always enjoy watching your vlogs James. As an ex Darlo lad I thought your vlog of Darlington hit the right spots especially as it was a Wednesday. Keep the vlogs going you and Helen are a quality double act 👍
I was born in Darlington the year England won the World Cup! Enjoy going back to visit relatives, and it stiil feels like going home even though I have not lived there since the early 70s. Like these UK town vlogs.
Hi James, considering you nearly didn't put this vlog out i'm so glad you did. It was full content, humour & with another great snap shot of everyday life. Glad you added your Friday rant, it's been a while, and just has to be done. Just keep doing this, producing great vlogs and i'm sure your channel will really grow ...big style. Great video and whatever camera you use makes Darlo look better than what it probably is. Think you missed the theatre out but plenty to feast the eyes on.
I enjoyed that vlog James! Honestly...I've thought from the start (which weirdly for me...was the SOUTHEND VIDEO!...I watched it purely by chance because I used to live in Southend)...that YOU don't really know WHY your channel is so popular! So...I'll tell you (from a well-OVER 50s bloke!)...😂... Two things... 1. We get to see places that we may have never been to before. And... 2. YOUR unique "Yorkshire Blunt"...TAKE on these places. It's actually a simple, but also very hard to achieve recipe! It's the same reason that we love... Whitehouse and Mortimer Gone Fishing... And... The Detectorists... And... Salvage Hunters etc etc Just...middle-aged "blokes" take on the world around them. Highlights of this video for ME, were... 1. Seeing that Stephensons Rocket bridge!...because I own a copy of the original biography of Robert Stephenson printed in 1864. 2. Did you notice that the woman you spoke to in Boyes...was a SOUTHERNER? 🤔 I wonder what her story was? 3. Just seeing another majestic northern Georgian industrial town (City?)...which I'll almost certainly never get to myself. So...as much as you think the video was cr@p... It most certainly WASNT mate. 😊
Thanks Chris, I really appreciate that. I want to start talking to more people but its quite hard as people dont usually want to speak. I've got a few on my next vlog in Middlesbrough though!
@@bythecurbIt's a really good video ,please stop undervaluing yourself. ,it would have been very dissapointing if you had chosen not to post it. If in doubt about posting ANY of your future videos, consider these FACTS. . We get taken to places we most likely won't get the chance to visit. .You endure all the costs ,time, planning, stress ,sometimes tetchy people. The drastic temperature changes ,the unknown . We sit back in cosy pyjamas warm slippers, comfy chair ,cheeky glass of red , and press a button, click on LIKE BEFORE ! we have started our next adventure . We dont even have to find a Tesco for our ablutions, we cant complain at that can we 😊
Some days it works, some days it doesn't, but we'll all still watch 😊 It's real life and a good laugh. The Chatsworth House bit, that's disgusting. They are clearly not disability aware, and that's terrible. Money over human decency. I'm glad you posted this vlog! Did you manage to get your drone from behind that fence? If not, hopefully, a viewer will get it for you. Welcome back to the ice age, which is England 😂 Andy.
Thank you for putting the vlog up James and showing our hometown in a good light. The little cafe you bought the scone in does some fantastic home cooked food, you should have tried the pie! Yes the phone signal in 'Darlo' is rubbish, and we have the EE call centre on the edge of town!
I enjoyed this vlog. It’s real life. I absolutely hate fake people. You are authentic. The town is very cute. Thank you for taking us there. When I was in Camden Market in London last month on a Sunday it was so crowded. My daughter and I walked different directions when shopping and we lost each other for over an hour and guess what…neither of us had phone service. Thank goodness she’s tall and had a bandanna on her head so I was able to spot her head bopping around way off in the distance. But it was pretty weird to be such a busy area had no service. Happy Birthday. I hope you have a great time celebrating.
Thanks for the tour of Darlington. It looks a nice place to me. I like the idea of Yorkshire coast vlogs. We are looking to visit there next year and would like to see what you find.

I live and work in Darlington and to be honest, Wednesday is definitely the quietest day of the week. If you'd been on a Friday or a Saturday, it would have been more busy. Though, I find it like most places in the country. Full of vape shops, nail salons and barbers

Have a great birthday James and it doesn't matter where you are you and Helen have great personalities that's why we love your videos ❤
This is exactly why I love your channel James and Helen.
Decent, ordinary people (And fellow Yorkshire folk to boot😊)
Regarding your Parents experience at Chatsworth House…That is absolutely disgusting.
He’s great love it
Well done from Texas to Darlington brilliant James 👏
I know that you felt that it was really boring walking around and not much going on. But you definitely let everyone see how lovely of a place Darlington is. Also, maybe because you were by yourself and you and Helen have been together the last few weeks.but thank you for sharing this vlog. Always following you guys, from Canada.🇨🇦
Thanks
Thank you so much ❤️
They are shafting us in every orriface! A super vlog, James! ❤
I like whatever you film, carry on 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧
Awesome video James enjoyed
Enjoyed this vlog James. Happy birthday dude.
Thank you
vic reeves use to go to eastbourne school here in darlington years ago /my mate was in the same year as him..
Happy birthday James for the
Week end mate I have a great day with your family and Helen
Mate so be safe guys
Mortimer and Whitehouse gone fishing is the best program on tv
Bob Mortimer is a National Treasure
Vic Reeves is from Darlington. His band/group beat my band in Darlo "Battle of the Bands" in 1978.
Wow Bob Mortimer there you go !!!👏 Oh & Happy birthday🎉 hope you have a great day with all your love one's 💜💜💜💜Xxxx
Don’t get disheartened James. Coming back from Texas to Darlington is a culture shock. Get to the sea side get Helen to come along you’ll soon pick up where you left off. Love what you do. Keep on doing it. Happy birthday for the weekend enjoy quality time with the family. ❤
So sorry, but not a good watch. Apologies to folk in Darlington. ❤
Hi James,we have been watching your channel for ages now (i think since your virginia water vid) and love it, its great fun, my wife and i have visited so many places after watching you go there its been great(still need to go to Ludlow).Love your idea of vlogging the yorkshire coast it sounds a great plan. One last thing you said most subscribers are men over 50 but i reckon thats probably couples as most of just use the one account to watch youtube.Keep up the good work, many thanks for all your hard work, cheers,Lee.B
Hey up James….good to see you back in the uk again …..you’ve gone up even more in my estimation than before for watching rising damp….best comedy series ever….another cracking vlog…….from the immaculate towns in Texas to graffiti ridden darlo……so sad ….stay safe James 👌🏻👌🏻
morton palms morton park the brick train that was built 1998 , second area skerne bridge the oldest working railway bridge the carpark was the gasworks
Great video and whatever camera you use makes Darlo look better than what it probably is. Think you missed the theatre out but plenty to feast the eyes on.
OMG! I live local to Darlington and I’m always there basically every day, surprised I missed you 😮
Will be watching later on tonight
Please do Staithes i havent been there for over 50 years. Robin Hoods Bay as well please.
James,we always enjoy your vlogs, these things happen, you do take us on some great adventures, no matter what 😅❤
Good one James I enjoyed Darlington. It’s a big thumbs down for Chatsworth 👎
And...
Salvage Hunters etc etc
Just...middle-aged "blokes" take on the world around them.
Highlights of this video for ME, were...
1. Seeing that Stephensons Rocket bridge!...because I own a copy of the original biography of Robert Stephenson printed in 1864.
2. Did you notice that the woman you spoke to in Boyes...was a SOUTHERNER? 🤔
I wonder what her story was?
Thats Bob Mortimer territory isnt it?! 😂 @bythecurb
And...Chris Rea!
He might pop an egg in your bath if you ask nicely! 😂
We dont even have to find a Tesco for our ablutions, we cant complain at that can we 😊
Perfectly said! 😊 @@judepicton6252
Thanks Andy, the drone is gone for good but it was a really old one and on its last legs hence me being so reckless with it
Happy Birthday James, great fan because your vlogs are real, getting better each time.🎂🍺🍻
Just become patrons of your channel.
Love from Andy and Sharon from Hull ❤
Thank you so much
The comedown from sunny Texas to Darlington is real lol
Ooo yes please do that !
Start at Redcar , I had fish & chips in the chippy they filmed Vera in a few months back
Happy Birthday 🎂 James have a great day. Keep warm
Outstanding! 😂 Welcome back to 🥶 north east reality!
Thanks for the tour of Darlington. It looks a nice place to me.
I like the idea of Yorkshire coast vlogs. We are looking to visit there next year and would like to see what you find.
Hi James - Your Video is Really Good - Sorry You Lost Your Drone - Im Glad You Did Decide to Load This Video Up - On a Positive Note - We Got A lot of History - Fantastic Artwork on The Wall and The Monument Was Really Brilliant - Shops Good - Fantastic Little Places In The Always - I Enjoyed It So Thanks James
I live and work in Darlington and to be honest, Wednesday is definitely the quietest day of the week. If you'd been on a Friday or a Saturday, it would have been more busy.
Though, I find it like most places in the country. Full of vape shops, nail salons and barbers
The Causey Arch is a bridge near Stanley in County Durham, northern England. It is the oldest surviving single-arch railway bridge in the world.the bridge was completed in 1726,
We can’t get a mobile signal ..yet they told us they phoned the men on the moon on a landline in 1969 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
Ignatius Bonomi designed the Skerne Bridge, the world's oldest railway bridge in continuous use, in 1825:
You're 10 X better than McMaster you are genuine and honest he's so predictable and when he gets a low score he comes back with click bait about the EV car he doesn't even own , just get your ass to Spain in the mini RV . Just not Benidorm that's been done to death 😁😎
Nice little vlog. Darlington looked ok tbf. Have a great Birthday and catch up time with your family .. vlogging aint essy.. so don't stress it ... I'm sure you'll find plenty of content as you travel down from Redcar.
Sometimes things just happen as you travel around.
