Ian is on heavy amounts of meds, lithium and olanzapine. They make you very groggy when you start taking them, in particular olanzapine in my experience. That’s why he seemed distracted and confused when Mickey and Fiona visited him.
Lithium, from my experience, also creates such a heavy brain fog so I would imagine both combined would be awful
@@nickb5371 I think so too. When I first started I forgot names of people I’ve known for years. I slept for like 3 days straight.

As an teenager who’s also dealing with bipolar, Ian’s representation of bipolar is so validating and well written. From what i’ve seen of your reactions, you’ve reacted just fine! I myself am also bisexual. everything you’ve said either relating to bipolar or ian being gay has been very respectful :) also ian is adjusting to medication! that’s why he’s sort of out of it
atleast i think he’s getting used to medication, if not the environment has him a bit off

I have a lot of diagnosed bipolar people in my life, both friends and family; and we’ve talked a lot about being medicated vs not etc. Basically Ians gonna struggle to feel “like himself” for a while. Especially right after being diagnosed, trying to find a cocktail mix of meds to treat it can feel like sanitising yourself- they’re literally called mood stabilisers- so even if you can admit they’re 100% necessary it can feel like it’s “not the real you”.
The way I understand it, if you’re used to being on a roller coaster all the time then you finally start to level out, it’s a hard transition to accept

any time I had an episode before I was solidly medicated, (sometimes takes awhile to find the right meds that work well together) I’d remember most of what happened. Never had one nearly as bad as Ian’s, and I haven’t been on such heavy meds like him so I can only imagine how much worse it is for him, but most episodes happen so quickly (not that they aren’t lengthy sometimes, but everything just feels like it’s at 5x speed) that a lot of it ends up being a bit blurry.

I was a self admit for an inpatient stay for chemical dependency and Bipolar disorder and man let me tell you the first day you wake up you are MAD and want to leave. That's very accurate. They also most likely put him on Lithium which is one of the heaviest meds for bipolar disorder. It took my doctor 3 attempts to get me off it because I kept getting suicidal

bipolar disorder have three stages, euphoria (ian stealing the baby and running away), deep depression (when you go completely blank for no existential reason) and the normal stage (when you actually act like yourself because you’re medicated)

I was placed on a 72 hour hold when I was 18. Scariest goddamn experience of my life. Can’t say it helped me much honestly, it just taught me not to be honest about my feelings, I was too scared that they’d make me go back.
i just realized that the ending of episode six is where my favorite track from the series takes place, and it just wasnt in the reaction highlights so i didnt know it happened. its the song playing when fiona gets to gus' apartment and they have sex, right after she was with jimmy-steve. its called discoloration, by dawn golden, and it hits like a truck.
carl is my favorite his character is so good these next few seasons

I've said it once and I'm going to say it again I'll probably keep saying it f*** you Frank and the love story between Mickey and Ian it is absolutely beautiful
dont feel afraid of asking/saying what u think are stupid or wrong questions. it gets a free pass when u show actual real interest in learning about it. as a trans person, i had to go through a period of understanding that. sometimes i would lash out at people only wanting to get closer, just cause i wasnt ready to open up about stuff they wanted to know. with time u kinda learn to see when someone is an asshole trying to tear u down, and who's just a caring individual trying to learn. its hard to open up about ur real and personal struggles and experiences, and thats what sometime these people are asking, instead of the cookie cutter blank devoid of individualism that comes from the easy "google it."

I agreed with another comment but I was just going to say Ian's zombie state is drugs. I feel like the dramatic change makes it seem almost evil but I swear I am the biggest proponent that like everyone with like schizophrenia / bipolar should take their drugs. There's no way their lives are better without being on the drugs. It'll even out in time, even if their face sometimes don't move beyond the pretty fat affect. Most of the other things when it comes to living their daily life does become easier. But just like any dopamine high, there's a bit of an addiction to the feeling of mania when your other choice is 'blah.' stable blah, but... 🤷🏿♀️
Jimmy Steve was a good dude but the writers did him dirty this season🤦
