    I wish they had brought up Cormac McCarthy more. He is an absolute genius and the existential message of this movie and the subverting nature of the plot are hallmarks of his work. The Coen Brothers are amazing and in my opinion have captured the tone and pacing of a Cormac McCarthy novel better then anyone else ever could have, and were truly the perfect directorial choice for this movie, but much of what is attributed to the Coens input in this story already existed in Cormac's book.

      100%. They did say they hadn't read the book so I guess you can't blame them but I agree, the Coens were working with really strong source material to begin with.

    Suggestion: Brad Bird, about "Ratatouille". My favorite movie right now. Perfect story telling, an (animation) movie masterpiece. The fact, that the antagonist (Anton Ego) has the most emotional scene in the movie, is one example for it being so exceptional.

    • @raimarulightning
      @raimarulightning 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is Ego truly an antagonist? I'd say the short chef I'd the film's true antagonist for the duration of the story.
      I agree it's brilliant. Can I ask why you made the qualifier of it being animated?

    Actually, returning to save the guy with the water delayed Brolin's character's death. The suitcase of money had the tracker in it. Chigurh would have quickly found Llewelyn at his home. After Llewelyn returned with the water he knew they would discover his identity(from his truck), giving him a chance to run.

    • @Ryotsu2112
      @Ryotsu2112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure if the tracker alone would have been the death sentence for Llewelyn. I had always thought that it didn’t matter, because either way the tracker would have given him away, but know I’m not so sure. If he hadn’t gone back to the scene and exposed his truck, VIN number and revealed his identity, it might have been pretty hard for them to narrow down an area small enough to search for the transmitter signal. That’s a huge rural area to canvas without any leads or clues, and there were no other witnesses to Llewelyn’s initial trip to get the money. It’s possible he would have been smart enough to figure out how dangerous the situation was, and get the money and his wife out of there before they managed to eventually locate him by blindly canvassing the area (even without discovering the tracker, although he surely would have gone through the bag soon enough). I don’t think he would have stayed put with that illicit stash of money.

    I disagree with how strictly they push structure, having a structure doesn’t automatically make ur film good and not having a strict structure doesnt make it bad, just because thats how they work doesnt mean everyone should work that way or to think that if you dont follow these strict rules of structuring your films that you couldnt make a good film, i think you can instinctually have structure also which i think the best writers do, but lets think of this like legos, when you ditch the instructions of the lego set you might find your creativity is unleashed and leads to possibly something greater than the instructions, but you still know how to build with legos and based on what your making you know what is needed in the build therefore ur instincts and skill might have a seemingly structured experience but without having limited yourself and falling into the formulaic beats that so many basic mediocre films follow today hence why these guys’ films seem so manufactured and similar to every blockbuster that comes out. Yes i like their movies but to think this way is the only way is absurd. If you understand film and what makes great filmmaking youll understand what your film needs at the moments its needed, not just having things in the film just because some instructions told you to have them.

    Another great video about one of the best Cohen movies. James Brolin gives somes interesting insight about the insecurity that some actors feel when they find directors like the Cohen that don´t want to talk a lot about motivation because they truly trust them. And I also love the anecdote in which Javier Bardem was very frustated with the Cohen Brothers because of this. It´s a great irony that thanks to this role the Cohens gave him, he was going to be the first spanish actor to win an Oscar.
    I hope you don´t mind if I say that I don´t agree with some of the points being made during this video. I imagine that you want this channel be a place of learning and debate.
    I´m only going to talk about the main point I don´t agree:
    Joe Russo says that you are using Syd Field paradigm to analyze the movies you talk about here. I´m not a fan of arguing about the quality of a script using “the paradigm”, because many people try to fit in there movies that don't fit in there and I´m not a fan of a theorist that uses “Chinatown” [1974-Roman Polansky] like an example of why you must know your ending before start to write. In 19:18, Joe says that “No country for old men"´s inciting incident is when Llewylin (James Brolin´s character) “pulls the tharp off the back of the truck and there is drug”If we have to use Syd Field's paradigm, then I think that the inciting incident is when Llewelyn finds the briefcase with the money and decides to keep it. That's the thing that breaks his initial status quo and changes his life. For me it's not the moment when he sees the drugs, because, why not say that the inciting incident is when Llewelyn sees in the middle of Texas desert a injured dog limping or the moment when he sees throrugh his binoculars dead people near a pack of trucks. None of these things change his status quo, taking the money does.
    That being said, that´s the inciting incident for me IF Llewlyn is the main character or the protagonist of this film.
    And now I´m going to say something that could be very easily argued against. What if the real protagonist is sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones)?
    I know, I KNOW, his character is only “present” 22 minutes, and the Llewilyn has more or less 53 minutes. More than the double of the screen time. I know. But let me make my point. First of all the film´s name is not “No country for ex veterans of Vietnam” it's called “No country for old men” And we start and we finish with this old cop. If we assume that Bell (Tommy lee Jones) is the main character he starts saying in voice over meanwhile we see some West Texas landscape: “The crime you see now it's hard to take its measure (…) But I don't want to push my chips forward and meet something I don´t understand”Meanwhile we see Chigurh (Bardem) for the first time being arrested“You can say it's my job to fight it but I don't know what it is anymore... More than that, I don't want to know. A man would have to put his soul at hazard" And right afterward we see Chigurh killing the cop who arrested him and a driver using his cattle gun. For me this is the inciting incident. It´s true that Bell is not present when this killings happens but his voice over is meanwhile Chigurh arrives at his turf:
    To his world appears a “new type of criminal” that he doesn't want to face, because he doesn't want to risk his soul. During the whole movie he is being very reluctant with the investigation, because he knows that nothing good is going to come from this like he even asks his secretary to call his wife to tell her that he is going to see Llewellyn´s wife and he doesn't want to be the one to call his wife because she might tell him to come back home, and he might do it. At the end of the movie we are not waiting for the confrontation between Chigurh and Llewelyn (Because we have already seen their shootout in the hotel and in the Street at the middle of the film) What we are really waiting for is the showdown between Chigurh and sheriff Bell and what price Bell´s soul will have to pay for it. That´s why for me Bell is the main character.
    I sincerely do think that McCarthy and also the Cohens don´t play with the rules of “Syd Field´s paradigm”. There are many more things to debate here…Anyone?
    Looking forward for the next video :)

    • @FERNANDOVERNIERE
      @FERNANDOVERNIERE 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not the only one who thinks Bell is the main character. I have some allies that seem to support this idea: The Cohen Brothers themselves.
      If you have the film´s dvd or blu ray you can see an extra called “Diary of a county sheriff” or if you don't have it you can watch here:
      th-cam.com/video/xLEzWXGo1vA/w-d-xo.html
      In 00:44 They say “The movie is about a middle american small time sheriff. It's about this character's perspective on time going by and aging and things changing and that's no surprise giving the title of the book” . Also, the Cohen Brothers also refer to Bell as “the main character” in 4:53.

    I Recently Stumbled Across an Article on Nofilmschool on Facebook Regarding No country for old men , & I told myself Today will be the day I watch this movie, and we'll.. it completely blew me away & Subverted my expectations in the best way Possible , what's so great about no country for old men is that both Hero & Villain are really both Anti hero's & from the get go Llewelyn & Chigurh are both doing Unlikable Things, Chigurh Strangle the police Officer to death , and Llewelyn Takes money that dosn't belong to him but the Reason why we as an audience become attached to Llewelyn is That he is in a Relationship with Carla which exudes a playful charm between both if them when they are first seen in the movie , Which is Something Chigurh is completely Exempt from. as the cold blooded Socio/ Physcopathic Nutcase Assassin , The end of the second act going into the third was completely polverising one of my favourite films of all time , Great Analysis from Brolin & the Russo brothers big fan of your work ! The movie falls apart for me when Brolin's character dies (even off screen). I am not invested in the story anymore after that moment. From my perspective the storytelling of the movie is flawed, it leaves me with a "meh." feeling. If the Coens wanted to subvert the expectations, they did it in a clumsy, on the nose, not very clever way. A very clever way to subvert expectations of a movie audience would be "Pulp Fiction".

      It’s an actual frame for frame masterpiece. The dialogue alone is Shakespeare meets West Texas, but when you add in the cinematography and acting it’s unquestionably 1 of the 5 best movies since the turn of the century.
