The Most Debated Watch of 2024? But also one we all seem to agree about...
Ironically, where the Nautilus was one of the biggest catalysts that began the "Integrated Bracelet Trend" so the Cubitus seems to have hammered the largest nail in the trends coffin ;)

i don’t think integrated bracelets are a trend. been here too long to be so. ita now a category just like divers or chronos.

How we forget the Nautilus was the ugly duckling, taking decades to become a swan. Minor updates (love your mesh bracelet render) and time will likely see the same result. Consider also the complications a larger dial could accommodate. In pictures it looks clumsy, videos on wrists I like it.

I agree with your review @IDGuy.
Honestly, the Patek CEO comment about people complaining about the design not being able to afford one is so elitist and shortsighted. It's exactly the reason why people who might afford a Patek in the future will turn their back on them and people like me who could buy one simply won't because we don't want to be associated with such classless people.

I feel like they really missed out on redefining their version of a sports watch. They put so much research into the new double date complication, I would have loved to see a double date standard for all models in the collection with the date at the 6 o’clock. In addition, I think removing the wings from the watch head would go a long way to distance itself from the nautilus. Finally, the dial is obviously identical to the nautilus, they really needed to change it up with a sunburst finish or something

Nothing but concurrence with the former, but the latter - I dunno. Many have been predicting the demise of the integrated bracelet watch for some time, yet they keep being released and they keep selling. I'm wondering if it has become a category; a diver, a chronograph, a dress watch and an integrated bracelet sports watch. They're just 𝘴𝘰 good to wear, either on the bracelet or on an OEM strap.
I'm beginning to think they may be here to stay.

Totally agree with you, even without mentioning the Stern comment on the critics the Cubitus received… much better a more “humble” Cartier Santos…
Hilarious the fact that the Cubitus should target a younger generation of watch passionate, the entry price is in line with the current bitcoin bubble, and we all know how the previous bubble + COVID went once we came back to a “new normal” way of life…
I’m a lucky owner of a Nautilus 3800 (the smaller, but more appealing version), once owned by my father who passed away some years ago, this was, is and will be the only only Patek to enter / exit in / from my home
AP is on a strange way, collabs, Wakanda, Spider-Man, … and for PP Stern speaks for himself, a man who EGO is so big to include e portrait of his father on a dial of a watch, no words needed…
At this point the holy trilogy I believe include only Vacheron Constantin and 2025 will be an important anniversary for VC, so expect the best from them (starting from the wonderful 222 in steel… do I need to ad others…)
    3 - 2 = 1 VC!!!

The fact you can't even be bothered attempting to tweak the design, speaks volumes. But I doubt this release signals the end of the integrated bracelet craze. After all, Gerald Genta is the keystone looming high above the integrated sports watch segment - not any particular brand - and his involvement was limited to designing the initial watch lines. The brands have been developing and/or 'massaging' Genta's original philosophy - independent of his input - for fifty years. I do wonder what Genta would think, had this been released prior to his passing.

The only thing they can sell and create hype from is a steel sports watch(preferably with a steel bracelet). End of stpry

My issue will always be 10 hears of research and newest line in 25 years, just for square nautilus… hell at least Rolex had the decency of yearly incremental changes and a gorgeous dress watch with the 1908 when they discontinued the celini

Going against the current here, however, you showed the og and the new square I’m inclined to think that the version does very much look more modern and may yet appeal to the younger audience. Would I buy one? Nope! Do I appreciate the CEO’s comments? Nope! Do I think these will sell? Yep!

The watch itself is fine, arguably a more conventional and less divisive design than the Nautilus. Not my cup of tea, but neither was the Nautilus or Royal Oak. The problem is all the games Patek have played, "discontinuing" the Nautilus, then releasing it again just in white gold, then releasing this steel Nautilus with a more squared case. They're just trying to be too smart, and it comes off as tricky, then combined with the fact that it isn't exactly the most innovative design to say the least, and combined with that ridiculous ad and the Stern comments just fed fuel into the dumpster fire.

Saw it on the wrist today..first time. Striking initial impression at the first glance on the wrist. First response is "is it a Jaeger....Cartier...?"
Thinking further, it's a cheap-reach line extension of the 5711. They're better than this (but are doing amazing things with other models).
So, then, this is simply mo revenue from the wanna-have-a-Patek people. Bit of a stoop for T Stern, but he did it before: the 24 line, which is equally cynical.

I personally think it looks great. Although I don't get the massively over rated Nautilus either .
Side by side its far more modern and clean with space to breathe.
The nautilus looks lumpy, cramped and old fashioned. The fawning and over hype is straight out of the " People only like what others like first" playbook . It really isn't that special.imho
My only gripes are the bracelet is too thin and the round movement window looks totally wrong, especially as it runs against the premise of the watch.
The thing he personally did wrong was by calling it a brand new range. Its obviously not and was even called a square Nautilus. If he had said its a side step for those wanting something similar but different. Most would have just moved on
Those who are all sad by his hurty words need heed Candice :

I tend to like the Cubitus a little more than the Aquanaut, but to be honest I have no desire to own either. Even if given to me I'd likely sell it, buy what I really want, and put a little change in my pocket. 😎 Cubitus buyers will probably find this tacky, but if I was in the market for a square watch, I would probably get the only TAG Heuer that appeals to me. The Monaco with the calibre 11 in it.
Edit: You know... now that I have thought about this for a few more minutes. I feel historically Patek really built its name, and demanded its high prices, due to the extreme level of craftsmanship and high horology. They were/are the pinnacle of the triangle of the holy trinity. Peak watchmaking. I feel they are now trying to drive their prices with exclusivity and controversial designs. I wanted to say "edgy designs", but its not actually edgy at all. Anyway, I mentioned square watches, but for high finish and high horology... Give me an Armin Strom or Breguet any time over a PP.

I assume wealthy people walk into Patek stores with no research, just bags of cash…..perhaps seeing it through unbiased eyes…we got a big square one, a curvy one and and middle curvy square one…I’ll take one of each with a blue face…maybe it works🤷‍♂️ I agree it’s uninspired, and not for me…but then the owner already called that out….its not for me. And even if I have the means…which is not beyond me for some models….its not for me. Thanks, his statement just shortened my list.

Thierry is a neo-baby who never heard the word no. It’s no wonder Sandrine divorced him. He just cribbed an old Genta design, made it square and called himself a genius. He definitely distanced himself from his family’s traditional watch company.
I’ve owned two Calatravas and while I liked the way they looked, found something I didn’t like - with the 3919, it was the crown. A manually-wound watch with a crown that small?!! The other watch was one I bought in pink gold, so that’s on me. Patek should have tapped a designer and made an all-new watch. The Sterns should limit Thierry’s time with the press and make him stay on script. Oh wait, I’m getting my nepo-babies mixed up.

@2:01 "no underlying identity" to me = they took the design people liked and stretched the shape or perimeter lines of the Nautilus. I am thinking of the 'Squircle' design of an automobile fender shape stretched to be more square. It rarely improves the previous shape, if you know what I mean . . . A lack of design confidence in the original

Since it took 25 years to launch a new model, and it really looked like the old model, is this design leadership from a Holy Trinity brand? Taking the Nautilus and squaring it off should not take 25 years! Sorry Thierry Stern you can be more innovative!

Whereas AP was criticized for the Code being a departure from the Royal Oak yet still coming across as sterile, the Cubitus seems so derivative that is almost lands in homage or microbrand territory. At least with the Code, it can stand on its own merits with the floating lugs, the patheon crystal, and the dial choices. The Cubitus will forever be relegated to applying Nautilus style cues in a disjointed manner. AP tried to move on from the RO, where as Patek has decided to milk its customers once more.
I would love to own a Code. I would never buy a Cubitus.

'I don't care about the design' - I couldn't agree more. And it's only the worst of design which can create that lack of an opinion. Where it's just so 'non' that it captures no emotion at all. The main take I have is the date in the centre complication looks terrible - why is one number bolder than the other - and why is it aligned so badly that it would make Seiko blush - and this is on a PR image....
