I love this! I think one set is the perfect place to start! Especially for your child’s age. And I love a good “every thing has a home!” ❤ I find it calming to put the sets back together.

I actually think tray blocks are great to start with!! Our first wooden block set for our 20 month old was the Grimms 36 piece mosaic, and it's perfect because of its simplicity and manageable quantity. Really little kids won't know what to do with a zillion blocks. I know when she's ready for more we'll be able to add a more advanced set and everything will be usable together, but still have a home come clean up time.

Do the unit blocks and Grimm's blocks get any play together? Uncertain if I should focus on just one since they are based on different scales.

Sorry if this is unclear but Grimm’s blocks are standard unit blocks. So they will work with all standard unit blocks (4cm scale). You can mix and match both brands, all scales, in my opinion.
