  • Contact, aka door, sensors can be used for much more than just doors and windows if you're creative enough. If you're anything like me, then you have probably purchased some of these when they've gone on sale and have a few extra lying around. Using these on a garage door is surprisingly easy when paired with the secret ingredient.... a hinge! In this quick video, I go over how I installed the sensor on the hinge and how it works. Enjoy!

    It may be worth mentioning that the hinge and contact sensor should be placed as high up as possible on the garage door. If the garage door is open a foot off the ground and there is still contact, it really is not a very secure option. If it breaks contact without leaving much of an opening at the bottom of the door, then this is indeed a nice solution.

    Interesting solution. However if you are comfortable soldering then you can just replace the internal magnetic (reed) switch with a tilt switch that can be bought on ebay for around $1 for a bag of 10. I did that modification to similar door/window sensors several years ago and it worked great. I installed them on the top of my garage door so that my home automation system can sense when the garage door is open and added one to my mailbox so that I can get notified when someone (ideally the mail delivery person) opens my mailbox.

    Nice idea, thx for sharing. I've had an inexpensive RF door switch mounted in 2 different locations and both spots had issues will take a look at trying this soon. Using a Sonoff rf bridge to send signal to wifi for Home assistant to monitor. Fun stuff.

    Well done! I had just recently changed my alarm system and installed another alarm system. The system came with multiple door sensors, and I was wondering if I could use one on the garage door without having to buy a tilt sensor. Well, thanks to your video, I was able to do just what you have demonstrated on this video, and it works better than the tilt sensors that I had previously owned! The only thing was I had to put a buffer under the magnet ( a felt strip ) so the the magnet would drop when the door was opened. Thanks for a great video! You're a genius!

    That is a cool little hack to make the switch work on the garage door. Samsung has just updated all the sensors and I bought the new multi purpose for 19.99 at Best Buy and same price on Amazon. It has an option to use it as a tilt sensor without the magnet and seemed to work great when testing. All the new Samsung sensors have come down in price. It's only been a day but seems to work great for 19.99 as I have to see how it holds up along with the battery.

  • @mikey38632

  • @kular01

    Couldn't you just stick the sensor on the chain drive trolley so the two pieces slide apart from each other?

  • @chadrawson2879
    @chadrawson2879 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think this is a good idea, albeit with one possible draw back. What if a theive pries your garage door just a few feet off the ground. Enough for them to just slip in? The only way I see this could work better is to put device on the very top of garage door section and not mid section or lower.

  • @italrowe
    @italrowe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    It seems to me this will only work if your door is all the way open. Your door could be opened partially and it will still read as being closed. You may want to install the sensor as high on the door as possible.

    Man, this is a great idea! I have gone through several 2GIG sensors trying to glue them to the bottom/side, and the magnet side keeps getting caught up in the track and eventually comes loose, no matter how much glue I try. One question, is there a special type of screw you need to install the bracket in the aluminum/steel garage door? Looked like your drill went in just fine but I’m not the handiest guy and not sure if there’s any special screw or drill bit needed. Thank you!

    Simple cheap and brilliant idea! BUT will it work with the Wyze sensors you reviewed? From that video the sensors had what appeared to be a much greater contact separation connect range than the hinge allowed for there and maybe would not recognize the disconnect?

    • @mikey38632
      @mikey38632 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm installing Wyze entry sensors now and I don't expect an issue. If you're concerned you could use a long hinge so the magnet separates further.

    my garage is detached so wifi is not really an option , i use 2 ultra cheap quiachip relays with my broadlink RM pro ,it can be integrated into smartthings with beckyricha's custom DTH but i have not done it ,i just use RM plugin running on my android box as a bridge for alexa and a few other tricks to get it working with GH/GA through IFTTT via webhooks, for the "sensor i just wired a $1.50 SPDT momentary button switch i got off ebay from china,my first idea was to attach it to a magnet to stick it on the rail so that the trolley pressed in the button when the door was up ,but for some odd reason my door did not rest in the same up position so i had to put it at the bottom instead
    but then i got a better idea , use an arduino pro mini, connected to a relay and an ultrasonic sensor
