Actually "raised" 3 of these last summer after collecting the tiny eggs off milkweed plants. All three morphed into beautiful colored Monarch butterflies. Take patience and care to make sure they survive up to and through the cocoon stage to adulthood..
I rescued 2 caterpillars at work a few years back. They were on parsley. I got both on the same plant and bought it, rigged a habitat including the plant and observed the process. Both made it through and were freed, but one took longer and I thought it had died in the chrysalis. That one landed on my hand when I freed it, and stayed there for a really long time before flying off. It was an interesting experience overall.
But you don't. You shed your outer skin while your hypodermis hardens into a shell, then your stomach ruptures and starts to liquify your innards while your cells start to reconstruct your body, while keeping your nervous system in place. On a human this level of metamorphosis would easily take at least a year. You might not be aware of it most of the time, but every now and again you wake up with your body completely liquified, trying to catch a breath with lungs you don't have, trying to scream with a mouth you don't have. It wouldn't be sleep. It would be torment.
