  • Tenzin Palmo offer thoughts on "spiritual materialism," a phrase coined by Chogyam Trungpa in his book "Cutting Through Spiritual Materialism." amzn.to/3BIiuuH The importance of regularly examining our motivations. #Buddhism #spiritualmaterialism
Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo is one of the Western pioneers of Tibetan Buddhism. As a young woman in England, she was a member of the Buddhist Society and met the first Tibetan lamas who came to the West. Tenzin Palmo would move to India to explore the dharma, becoming secretary to Freda Bedi at the Young Lama Home School before taking nun ordination, then later doing 12 years of solitary retreat. Freda Bedi's (remarkable) life story is told in amzn.to/3CD8Z1f

It’s part of the path. There are many traps on the path and one can learn and develop from it. Usually the world gives us feedback accordingly. Ego is human and normal. No sin or crime. Be friendly to yourself and carry on walking the path. 👼🏼

I know now that ego can also take the form of a people-pleasing ego. A self image based on "look at how helpful and small I am. See how I suffer for the good of others?" I actually meet more of these on the spiritual path, moreso than the aggrandizing type. The victim, the martyr. Does Buddhism address this as well?

Sure, most any kind of talking to oneself is just ego. Besides the Tenzin Palmo Q&A videos on our channel, you may find some of the ones with Khandro Rinpoche of interest.

Don’t know what that means. She learned from him while he was at Oxford until about 1962 and she was part of a Buddhist club. Then she went to India and he stayed in the West

Changing your name such as you did means you are a victim of spiritual narcissism.

She was given that name by her Tibetan teacher. It’s common that you receive a new name when you become a monastic.
