Flash Mob at Edmonton City Centre Mall. Pachelbel Canon in D on period instruments.

  • An Early Music Alberta "flash mob" at an Edmonton shopping mall at lunch time on April 12, 2012. The mob raised awareness to early music played on period instruments and it promoted the yearly Early Music Festival. Though the Canon in D by Pachelbel was not written for the instruments participating in the mob; this instrumentation did attract attention!
    The instruments involved: harpsichord, bass viola da gamba, vielle, traverse flute, recorder, sackbut, treble gamba, baroque violin, harp.
    A special thank you to Edmonton City Centre Mall.

    It's sad that so many people just walk by and don't even have some time to listen to this wonderful music :/

      I found the general indifference very disappointing as well. I think it's because most people only listen to contemporary popular music, and are not interested in or attuned to ancient music.

    This certainly sounds more authentic than a lot of the flash mobs you see these days, where it sounds like the music was recorded in the studio. Truly amazing, and right here in EDMONTON! C. Pearce

    Some people are way too picky...
    'flashmobs' are about spreading joy unexpectedly and doing this on period instruments takes the whole idea up a notch, bravo👏👏

    These people commenting realize they're in a freaking mall with hundreds, if not thousands of people? Of course they're gonna be bloody shrill or no one would hear them at all. I don't know about you pessimistic lot, but this is the most positive and constructive thing i've seen people do for others in a long time.

    Well, I just finished a violin lesson and was playing this with my teacher only a few hours ago. It’s not an easy piece to play. The amount of people who just walked past without even stopping, tells me that the majority of society doesn’t understand or appreciate music or the amount of practice it takes for musicians to get this good.

      Pachalbel wrote the majority of his music for the church - most of his stuff is worship music, including this.

    I don't get the negative comments.If you don't have the time to listen, don't.
    As far as it not being perfect, so what? It's beautiful music none the less.
    The whole point is to raise a smile, and it succeeded. thanks for posting..

      You "don't get the negative comments"? You must be kidding. This performance is absolutely awful.
      Just do a TH-cam search on "Canon in D" and take your pick. There is a huge load of them about, and all of them are a joy to experience.

    Absolutely beautiful. So wonderful to see all those instruments too! It did bring a tear to my eye as it is the piece of music I walked into the church to (along with many, many others!) to marry my husband. Only to the church organ mind - to see these baroque instruments played so beautifully is a treat.

    Hello Lynn Rob,
    It was a highly organized event. Yes, we sat down with the management of the mall and they where very enthusiastic. But only because that was a very unique project. They supplied us with the best location. Also, we where able to use a empty space close by to tune and prepare. Security was notified. My advise: Let the authorities know, they can be a great help with your project.
    Good luck with the preparation and have fun.

    It's called "canon" for a reason! I'm sure these musicians know what canon is, I still have to say it, canon is when one instrument/voice start playing and some measures/bars later joins other, playing same melody, but bit late. So I don't get why to play so many instruments in unison!? I think that's why they got off the tune... there is whole orchestra, guys you could play something else instead of composition for 4-6 insruments...

    • @monscarmeli
      @monscarmeli 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nikoloz Tskvitinidze Hi, well the answer is that it's not really a "canon" but rather a "passacaglia", or what Professor Schikele would call a "ground round" - the constantly repeated bassline with melodic variations over top......

    • @nikoloztskvitinidze1599
      @nikoloztskvitinidze1599 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Real canon or not, idea is that when second and third instruments start playing they repeat what was previously played, but it harmoniclly fills up what is played by first and other instruments. So why unison, I don't get it. With that amount of musicians they could play something more interesting...
