Green-backed Heron (Butorides striata) Bird Call & Video | Striated Heron
The Green-backed Heron (Butorides striata) is what we generally call it in South Africa, it was previously known as the Green-backed Night Heron, and now, because it occurs all over the World, is actually well known as the Striated Heron.
They are very photogenic waterbirds that hunt frogs, small fish, tadpoles, crabs and other aquatic creatures and insects. They are one of my favourite birds, and we have captured the best photographs of the Green-backed Heron at the Lake Panic Bird Hide close to Skukuza in the Kruger National Park.
They mainly call at night, but can be heard calling when flying and during dusk and dawn.
