- Welcome to todays episode of trying to beat a game in a way the developers would logically never allow as we try and defeat massive opponents and castles using an army comprised entirely of Horses and cavalry who can exploit the perfectly balanced world of mount and blade bannerlord to become immortal and defeat all opponents by out running them and fighting from range. So can you beat bannerlord with only Horse or will spiff need to find a different overpowered strategy to beat the game beyond this seemingly impossible challenge... Wait he is using exploits? Well I guess that means this challenge will be perfectly balanced and surprisingly easy ;)
What you have seen here today is part of a fantastic perfectly balanced series on youtube where I go from game to game and break them with wacky exploits to gain things like unlimited gold. @@Qureas yes throwing weapons are good. Bows and crossbows aren't. Crossbows have too long a recharge and bows become horrendously in accurate with movement
@@quincyking010 I completely disagree that bows aren't good. You just have to raise your archery and riding skills, it just takes longer to be good than throwing weapons I'd say. My characters usually make that a priority and I end up getting a lot of kills with archery.

Horse archers were pretty OP on an open field. They were unable to take castles and had trouble with certain terrain. They were perfect for looting the countryside with impunity, but if you wanted to take a capital, you generally needed infantry and siege engines. Also, combat-trained horses were hard to get in large numbers unless that was your entire culture's shtick. You can't just take a draft horses off the farm and get it to charge at a forest of angry pointy things.
the good news is horse archers don't need to be high level to be good they make for a very cheap army. and one reason the horse bow is so good is that the Crossbow faction and the Longbow faction are very far away from them and too busy fighting each other. valandian cav+crossbow hard slap the horseboys. the British longbows+anticav infantry, their country's chokepoints and forest seed let them catch you.

I swear, in literally every game I've ever played (except Stronghold Crusader 2 which has lock on heat seeking arrows) horse archers are so broken because their arrows will land 3x as often as their opponents' will. Fighting a horse archer is like trying to hit that pokemon that just used sand attack on you 6 times.

I once did something similar to this (though played as the Empire, and allowed myself to recruit non-cavalry that could be upgraded to cavalry later) - and yes, it truly is overpowered. The main thing I enjoyed was telling my cavalry units to follow me, and then riding at the head of a massive, glimmering army of cavalry, looking back at them with awe.

Ahh yes, the game that made me appreciate a fraction of how hopeless and terrified the enemies of Mongolians must have been, fighting them on an open field.
Currently I am building the atila the hun army, nothing but heavy cav as shock and tons of horse archers to rain death. So far, took on armies 4 times my size and only lost a few dudes to the pain being given, only weakness is a wall.

Just remembered my playthrough of warband + prophesy of pendor mod. You can create your own knight order, deck them out in gear and train them. I of course only sent the best archer in the game to train them up to 500 archery proficiency and 10 power draw, decked them out in elven bows and put them on elven horses. Turns out bots with extremely high accuracy + bows + fastest horses in the game are pretty good.
I need to stop watching people play this. Every single time, without fail, it gives me the urge to play it again and I lose days of my life.

Solo player horse archer vs 40 looters? Unfair fight, need more looters.
Horse Archers and Heavy Cavalry are always OP, they need higher upkeep to balance them. Been the same in all M&B games.
You get charge bonuses, extra HP since shots will hit horses instead of troops, maneuverability, and ranged all together. Soften them up with archers then full on charge them with heavy cavalry, it's an immediate win unless you're outnumbered 10 to 1
@@55Ironside actually it is very realistic against naked infantry but irl infantry forces stops horse hordes with fortifying battlegrounds spear formations, ground holes, spikes, primitive trench systems etc game doesn't allow fortyfying battle grounds that makes horses owerpowered.

even castles aren't much of a problem once yr hores-archers are upgraded a bit, they get the best bows in the game at top level, but even before that have pretty decent range- you can just sit outside range of the archers on the walls & snipe them down... ('course you do have to use a bit of siegecraft to not get mulched by wall-based artillery, but...)

Nice to see this setup didn't change much from the first game. My usual strategy was to equip a bow an as many arrows as possible, get some horse archers following me, and start circling around the enemy, while my peasants and other low lever troops are charging the enemy. And if some of these pedestrian plebeians would survive long enough to be leveled up, they could get a horse and a bow and join me on my glorious rides.

As Vlandia, I have actually gained significant holdings and income that I was able to field more than 300 Elite cavalary (The Vlandian Banner knights) I wanted to test if they were as strong as in Warband Elite Cavalry. To my surprise this is NOT the case. Perhaps the developers wanted to add some balance and ensure that all units have adv. and disadv. What a noticed is the All cavalry army , charging into a wall of elite infantry can cause heavy damage, but then as soon as they get stuck in that pile of enemy infantry, they get slaughtered. I suppose it makes sense, one must use calvary as a hammer and anvil strategy, sort of like in the Total War games.
However one criticism I have is that the cavalry charge seems so weak (EVEN if you use eilte cav). They never make peasant enemies fall to the ground. That needs to be changed.
I'm happy to see horse archers actually being as effective in M&B as they were IRL
I don't know how effective they were in reality though. Most of the time when you think of horse archers you think of mongols and they were only successful when attacking armies that mainly used levy troops while being professional troops themselves and that always has a good track record. Every time they ran into professional soldiers as opponents (like the Mamluks) they ended up losing.
Even conceptually they're not that effective, for example they're outranged by foot archers and more vulnerable to incoming arrows than foot archers so should in a vacuum always lose that fight.
@@jimmydesouza4375 Good point. I guess what actually makes me happy is the fact that horsemen don't stumble on trees and rocks in Bannerlord as casually as they did in Warband

11:55 you actually take only a fraction od gold and loot if you defeat them(10% gold and 50% loot if i remember correctly), so these are the left goods, not respawned. If you want to take all loot you have to leave 1 solider fleeing and persuade him into giving you whole loot and money.

There's a very good reason that cavalry dominated warfare from pretty much the 8th century to the 14th across much of Eurasia, whether we're talking Frankish knights or Turco-Mongol horse archers. Mobility is huge, and while infantry in close formation can throw back heavy cavalry all day, the moment their formation breaks up they become vulnerable.
Slight trick, change your cavalry archer's formation to a column, they will circle the enemy to death while shooting them from all directions, it is MUCH more efficient than just a line. Also, it you are the attacker, you can retreat once you are out of arrows and reattack. If you are helping another group against a big army and you are the 3rd party in that fight you can do it at will without consequences. With 70 or so of the imperial horse archers, I used to kill armies in the thousands in the highest difficulty that way.

Having never played the game, these videos have taught me one thing about it: Gotta go fast.
Have fast overworld movement and you can't lose, apparently.
I mean, it's not all that simple, you need a place to run *to*, so you can still get hemmed in if the AI is smart and flanks you. That said, generally speaking, yes, fast overworld speed and having many mounted men to achieve that helps.
On the other hand, having all horses means you're gonna suck when it comes to sieging keeps, so that's something to keep in mind.
Massing horses will prevail against the AI because they're not smart enough to post up on hills with tight formations to keep the charge damage to a minimum and allow archers to rain hell down on the horses. It's a fun strat, but it doesn't really get you much in the long run if you actually want to become King, which you need to conquer territories to do.
wait till you fight 600+ groups of guys with spears; with their captain boosting them with end game perks so they take less damage from charges etc etc
The strat he show here is 100% to role play as a looter with no home
You wont take a castle with that; let alone defend it even if you did had one.

I remember M&B 1, the overwhelming majority of my army was cavalry, with just enough foot soldiers or archers to make the AI go "oh, we should advance in a straight line while the cavalry circles around and passes right through us."
Who else would love to see Spiff revisit our omniscient overlord Shrak in the future?
I, for one, would love to see Shrak become a recurring character in the nigh future.

It gets to a certain point in warband where you only have 3 types of units swadian knights, hurscals and rhodian crossbowmen the last 2 go in all your castles and the first comes with you on your adventures and raids.

The first time I played bannerlord all I did was recruit imperial archers to promote them to bucellarii, ended up with over 100 in a party and could pretty much defeat any army as long as I could smash their ranged units first
The ending seemed... underwhelming; there was a great snowballing of strength, but there was no payoff to it!
It would be great to get a part 2 (maybe with some other tasty cheese?) with this character and his horde
Spiff does this all the time, when he shows how powerful some exploit is he will stop because there is no need to proof furthermore the exploits stength
in this case, he doesn't seem to have become supremely overpowered. Even at the end he was still saying "If an enemy lord comes along [the strong armies] we can just run away". This seems less "exploit to break the entire game" and more just "powerful way to play"
@@tanorgilbert9183 It's powerful until you want to take and hold any sort of land. It works for being a marauding horde tho.
@@Sam_Graves That goes for any army composition though. If you are overpowered by a few hundred men, there is nothing you can do. You will always have to rely on other parties.
He's proven his strategy, so there is no point in watching 3 hours of him using the same tactic over and over to steamroll every single enemy in the game If you want that, watch a long play instead.
You can alt click or right click, one or the other on armies or caravans to follow them without clicking constantly

It's funny when I get told "you need a balanced fighting force" when all you really need are cavalry and cavalry archers. That is like the best combo imo for a party.
Garrisons however are best with mostly archers imo.

This is how I've always played since Warband. This strat isn't as broken as it was in Warband, but its still very good.
When Bannerlord came out, I had a horse army. It was 100% mounted archers. Over 250 of the best that could take on pretty much anything. I would start by head hunting the leaders, and if I started getting too beat up, I sent in my troops. I usually took out the leader by using a pike swing on a horse.

The only unit worth having is anything from the noble’s son tree. They kill all infantry and the only problem is enemy horses.

All these years/months/days later and I feel especially fantastic with a nice warm cuppa beside me, and a chocolate muffin (with added custard drizzled on top because YES custard) giving this video a thumbs up. Because time is perfectly balanced.
