- In this video we look at how aircraft avoid bad weather in flight. We take a look at the functioning of the weather radar system installed in an aircraft. We also see the different indications that are shown on the Navigation Display and how they play a vital role in providing weather related information to the pilots. Based on these indications bad weather can be easily avoided and continue with safe operation of an aircraft. We also look at some of the functions that are also available on the Weather Radar System.

Excellent video, but the arrows are pointing at the wrong displays. Those are the ATC displays. The Navigation displays are at the other end of the arrows.

Another thing about the radar......even though there is only one antenna the Captain and First Officer can get their own settings on their display. The Captain might have one type of sweep set and the FO another type of sweep. The radar system will do the Captain's request on one sweep and do the First Officer's settings on the next sweep.
Great explanation... Could you also shed light on the use of multiple radars? like are they for giving different accuracies, different types of particles??
Only 1 radar is sufficient to get an accurate representation of the weather ahead of the aircraft. The 2nd radar is used in case of failure of the 1st radar.

For passengers, there is no good weather app! Try windy app!
does that mean that radar jammers dont work when it rains

Now explain why some airlines/ pilots/ flight companies still fly through a thunderstorm?
Sometimes it becomes necessary to land at a particular destination. Wouldn't want unhappy customers in a flight!
