Listening to the guys talk about up-selling with insoles takes me right back to what it was like working in a sports shop in the early 90s here in the UK. We had to try and sell protector as well but no bonuses involved. Flat folding T-shirts and sweatshirts for the tables was a nightmare, hours of tidying for customers to treat it like a flee market! I always thought insoles undermine the tech in the sneakers, Nike spend millions on the air bags for me to say a insole will solve the problems that Nike couldn't. If you have certain conditions they might help but generally Welty has this right!
I’m from Italy and I worked in in shoe sales in the last 10 years and It’s crazy how we have the same experience even in different ages and countries, like Welty said I hate too that if you don’t sale the insole you are a bad salesman especially in some companies, even if you can sale whatever shoes or clothing piece.
Another product that I saw being pushed heavily was the water repellent spray to "protect" your shoe. It's a hustle, same goes for movie theaters selling items in the concession stands.
Stock insoles in shoes are trash. They have basically zero arch support and replacing them can improve the fit and comfort of shoes. However, there are also shoes that once you swap out the insole they don’t fit anymore lol Replacing an insole can make a huge difference.

When i buy vans pro skate shoes it comes with a insole that has a THICK heel, so i put 2 thinner soles a converse lunar lon and a huf sole, i go through a ton of shoes yearly, ive been using the same 2 insoles for almost 6 years, i have wider feet
This is probably answered already but Footlocker and its affiliates no longer sells insoles. We did away with those and selling "hook ups" a few years ago. Nowadays we just encourage customers to buy socks because of a bogo deal or accessories like shoe trees or cleaner just meet the sales margin. Footlocker has gotten lenient over the past few years. We don't even tuck our shirts in anymore lol (which thank God cause that looked hella corny)
I definitely understand Welty on insoles! Insoles or orthotics can be beneficial in certain situations! Those "comfort" gel insoles definitely help if the shoe is a bit roomy AND needs some underfoot cushion. But if the shoes fit true, comfort insoles will make the shoe feel tighter, constrained and lead to potential stability issues.
Insoles have come a long way from spenco. Depending on the arch profile of the person, a good insole ($50-60 nowadays) will go a long way. More popular and functional in running shoes as opposed to the more traditional footlocker/Finishline shoe.
I've found insoles to make a big difference in hard sole shoes, toe tectors etc. Makes a big difference if standing and walking in them all day. Tried them in some running shoes to try and deal with some PF but no real success, buying a different shoe, better suited to my feet had a much better effect. Seems mad that you wouldn't just buy them independently of the shoes and then move insoles between shoes if needed.

Welty's insole point only applies to performance sneakers, most other sneakers just use the insoles that are on par for the price point. Nike is only gonna add a cheap insole to a $100 dunk pair, nothing that the wearer needs to keep on to make the shoe useful.
I never wear insoles. But I did play in Citrus Jordan 9’s in Junior College w/ insoles that were given to me and it felt AMAZING. This was 10 years ago and I never bought an insole after. Lol
Joe: if you drink a lot of coffee or sometime just some coffee, and you suffer from lower back problems, maybe at night when sleeping try giving up coffee for a month and see if it doesn't sort that out for you I'm telling you it works it's the kidneys 👍🏻👍🏻

The brands primarily focus on shoes and their tech. If anything since New Balance started off as a insole company and still make insoles, i think every brand should make insoles that are made for different/ most feet.

Bad posture, back/shoulder pain, etc all start at the feet as a suspect. They are different depths to insole and you just don’t slap them in any shoe! You buy ones that fit the shoe. Then Brendan making that “wow $45 for insoles, I hope they are..” comment. Dude Nike spends a penny on an insole. You don’t want to spend $$ on yourself for your health, comfort and making sure your feet aren’t jacked up? Like c’mon. Get your head out of the sand here! Least Joe has the sense of speaking the truth and took insoles seriously.
For someone who needs a little extra support, I'd argue manufacturer insoles are the biggest scam. What a cheap piece of flimsy garbage. Love a Currex or Superfeet. Definite S/O to Spenco Polysorb. Got me through high school XC.
