    I am happy that people use it really in real life. It is such a eco-friendly material.

    This is great, although the red tape in NZ to build this would be crippling, for example, the corner that. you had to make yourself that was sent by the the factory, would be a big no here, we would have to wait for the roof specialist to come and make that corner up at great expense and wasted time, they dont allow the builders to do the roof like that...i love what youre doing, keep up the good work.

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a shame, I thought Builders in NZ were like here and could do everything. I know Aus has a tradie for every part, (brickies, plasterers, roofers, tilers etc...) maybe it's changed a bit since I was there. Could always build with a simpler roof I guess?
      Thanks for watching

    Incredible job! House looks fantastic and a lot bigger than I first though. James has asked 'what is the first bit of furniture you are planning on putting in? And will it be made of hemp?'

    Hello! Thank you for these videos. So helpful! How will you insulate the roof? Could it also be done with hempcrete?

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi and thanks. This has a cold loft and have just insulated with 350mm of loft roll insulation. It can definitely be insulated with hempcrete but for this roof, that is a lot of area to cover and it just came down to cost and additional time in the end.

  • @petermelia6343

    Great project well done! Have you had any problems with the hempcrete shrinkage? or is that just folklore.

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, thanks for watching, glad to have you along. Not noticed any shrinkage in the hemp, no gaps have appeared arpund the window framing with put in. We have noticed some gaps forming in between the internalbwood wool board joins, which may be shrinkage or just the house frame settling. Nothing that can't be fixed with some tape before plastering.

  • @sometimesyoucan3671
    @sometimesyoucan3671 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what made you choose hemp? edit: like the dry ridge system. 👍

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a question for Matt that we'll ask him in th Q+A episode. We'll be recording that once we've finished rendering and cleared out the inside.

    Did you consider fitting solar panels flush with the roof?

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah it was considered but time (and cost) came into it. Not sure it's as big a problem now but the in roof ones didn't used to be as efficient as the roof mounted panels because of airflow. We wanted to do it ourselves too but MCS certification was causing a problem with that. We may revisit later on. Batteries are likely to come before solar as it stands at the moment.

    • @JohnnyMotel99
      @JohnnyMotel99 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thelowcarbonproject I had forgotten about MCS accreditation, as you say a solar battery could be a better option. The house should be so easy to heat anyways.

  • @supremehomerenovationsltd
    @supremehomerenovationsltd ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I see your not hemping the roof structure.Was that a cost based decision. Building a monolithic structure is (i believe) where all the full benefits derive from?

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, yeah pretty much down to cost. It shouldn't make too much difference as we will be installing a lot of insulation. The house will still benefit from very good insulation, (well above minimum requirements for a new build) thermal mass and good air quality by regulating the internal humidity.
      We will be testing how the house performs over the next 6 months and showing the results in future episodes.

    With those tiles I would have started from the top, then you wouldn’t have had to stand on them to fit the next ones 😂

    • @thelowcarbonproject
      @thelowcarbonproject  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We didn't need to stand on them, just slightly above. These type of tiles hook over the batten which, if we went from the top, would mean having to lift the tiles above to slot the other ones underneath, the one above also sits across 2 tiles below. There is more chance of breaking them that way and would also take a lot longer to do

    • @thelowcarbonproject

      We won't be using hempcrete in the loft but are looking at a hemp insulation rolls. Similar to regular rockwool insulation but not itchy.

      They are standard concrete tiles used in the UK. Matt got that type to match the ones we recycled when taking down the neighbours extension.
