It is called tactics. It is always better to preserve some juice for the straight run, instead of losing energy in the middle of the distance for senseless at this stage fight.

That 4x400 leg was as smart as I have ever seen. Sweaty allow herself to be passed on the back stretch, that put her in perfect position to win, never giving up the rail.
Her second 200m were always the strongest. Many a competitor took the bait & overtook her, thinking "yes! I'm faster", only to get rekt at the final 200 meters. It happened again and again..
Do not forget that both Justyna Swiety-Ersetic and Iga Baumgart-Witan (5th place, Personal Best) had both to run an hour-and-a-half later again. No other women's relay team had two tired athletes in 4 x 400 m final. But their sacrifice should be easy to understand, they are both soldiers in the Polish Army and soldiers put the mission first. Mission does not end because you are tired.
You should research some Polish-American athletes. Since you know a thing or two about Computer Science, I bet that you consider yourself a generation 0. Programmers count from 0 to 9, not 1 to 10.
Iga Baumgart-Witan, on her leg, lead Poland from 4th-5th place to 1st. Polish women tend not to overrun (run too fast) 1st 200 meters. They tend to wait patiently for the last 100 meters.

It's too much trouble to learn how to pronounce a name correctly, apparently.
At least the commentator should give a try and learn how to pronounce the surnames.
