Barry-Carlos may be more "famous" world wide than any other guitar player-Clapton,Beck,anyone.He's known in little villages in the smallest countries. He jams with more people from more bands than anyone and always has.He asks The Holy Spirit to transmit Love and Healing through his playing. The Blues foundation is Dark but he is an Instrument of Light.Hundreds of guest appearances,40 + albums, all the old Blues guys love him etc,etc,etc....

    Sweet JAM man .. thanks a lot !!! :)
Barry - it is not only blues man, I love it but it is not only blues. Carlos is recognisable in every note (he has the blues, tha jazz, the rock, the latin), you can't deny that. I love him.
    thanks,
    Nick

I agree with you about the Los Lobos boy's feel for the blues over Carlos. Carlos does not play the blues, per se', but everything he plays comes from the blues. I think if you get your mind around that, it's easier to understand why Carlos is famous. So much of Carlos' output is really cerebral. His tone is inimitable. I've never mistaken Carlos' playing for anyone else, nor have I mistaken anyone else for Carlos. He destroyed Woodstock 45 years ago and never looked back. A virtuoso.

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. Nice to offer an opinion w/o someone flipping out on me. I agree in the last several years, really maybe a of couple decades, Carlos almost seems to mail it in. I agree he's no longer surrounded by musicians who push him higher and I think he's stopped pushing back. He got a little caught up with hit songs and guest artists. I think his early work still stands the test of time. He's like BB King, Beck, SRV, Jimi - his sound is his alone. That's greatness.

No quarrel about his distinctive tone, perhaps that's part of the problem for me. What sounded so unique in the 1960's sounds so uninteresting to me now. He derives great inspiration from John Coltrane, another player with unmistakeable tone, but he doesn't challenge with his music the way Coltrane did. I think he also no longer surrounds himself with players who challenge him.

Santana's distinctive sound is more a voice than a tone. He doesn't really use it here. He didn't find this voice until 1969; his work before that was conventional blues.

I know what Im about to say will sound sacrilegious but David and Cesar are better players and more accomplished. Carlos has been playing the same beautiful but tired licks since the 60's.

Cesar and David have a much better feel for the blues than Carlos. The more I listen to Santana, the more I wonder why he's famous.
